Houston will play a total of seven games during the fourday tournament. The Cougars open with a 6 p.m. contest against Florida International on Thursday. On Friday, Houston faces Southern Alabama at 3 p.m. followed by a game against No. 3/4 Alabama at 6 p.m. The Cougars face Jackson State at noon and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday. Houston closes out the opening tournament weekend with a 10 a.m. game against Liberty and a 1 p.m. game against No. 23 South Alabama on Sunday. The weekend is set for a competitive field of softball as three teams (Houston, Alabama and South Alabama) advanced to the NCAA Regionals in ON HOUSTON Houston enters the second season of play in The American Athletic Conference. The Cougars went 3323 (138) during the 2014 season to finish fourth in the league and advance to the Waco Regional for the fourthstraight season. Head coach Kyla Holas also welcomes 10 newcomers including six transfers and four freshmen to the team. The Cougars lost three to graduation last season including pitcher/catcher duo and twin sisters Haley and Diedre Outon. Haley became the first Cougar in school history to be named CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican while also receiving NFCA AllRegion team honors. Following the 2014 season, Haley signed to play professional softball with the Akron Racers. Houston returns 11 letterwinners including starting middle infielders Kayla Holland and Selena Hernandez. Hernandez was named Second Team AllAmerican Athletic Conference shortstop as she led the league with 46 runs scored and ranked third with 37 RBI. She started every game at shortstop and recorded a.324 batting average. Holland returns for her final season as a Cougar. Last season, she started all 53 games at second base and tallied 45 hits with three home runs. On defense, Holland was a part of 11 of the Cougars recordsetting 28 double plays turned last season. Junior Katie St. Pierre returns for the Cougars in center field. She was named Third Team NFCA AllRegion outfielder for her outstanding 2014 season. She led the league with a.399 batting average and ranked second in on base percentage (.497) while racking up 12 stolen bases on 17 attempts. In the circle, senior Summer Groholski and junior Julana Shrum are the only two returning pitchers this season. Houston can also rely on the efforts of newcomers Kayla Maxwell and Shelby Miller as potential starters. Miller is a division I transfer from Southern Arkansas. Last season, she pitched and played outfield for the Mule Riders. Miller led her team to a Great American Conference Championship and was named Honorable Mention AllAmerican, First Team AllRegion, Conference Freshman of the Year, First Team AllConference and Conference Tournament MVP. Houston added 10 newcomers to the program including six transfers headlining the group. Juniors Courtney Mica, Megan Noel, Courtney Klingler, sophomores Shelby Miller, Savannah Martin, Jaylin Baldridge and freshmen Kendall Brown, De Zha Scott, Kaylin Crumpton, and Kayla Maxwell comprise the Cougars new class. ON FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL Florida International enters the 2015 season under new direction of firstyear head coach Gator Rebhan. The Panthers have been selected to finish first in Conference USA, sharing the spot with UAB. This game will mark the second match up for the two schools. FIU defeated the Cougars 32 in 2002 during the Speedline Tournament in Plant City, Fla. ON SOUTHERN MISS Southern Miss is also under new leadership as the Golden Eagles hired Wendy Hogue after a 10year stint at her alma mater William Carey University. Southern Miss is a team full of inexperience with 16 underclassmen; 11 sophomores and five freshmen. The Golden Eagles top returner this season is first baseman Sarah Evans who led the team with a.351 batting average. She tallied 46 hits and 26 RBI last season. Houston leads the alltime series The last time the two teams met was in 2013 when the two were a part of Conference USA. ON ALABAMA Alabama is one of Houston s toughest opponents this season. The Crimson Tide finished the season 5313 and was crowned the SEC Champions and went on to compete for the national title at the Women s College World Series. Alabama defeated Oregon to advance to the championship series vs. Florida. The Crimson Tide closed out the 2014 season ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/NFCA poll. The Crimson Tide returns eight position starters and two pitchers including AllAmerican outfielder Haylie McCleney. Houston trails Alabama 50 in the alltime series. The two teams met last season for two games during the Easton Crimson Classic. ON JACKSON STATE Jackson State enters the 2015 season coming off a SWAC regular season championship. The Tigers finished the year 2829 (161). The Cougars lead 20 in the alltime series against Jackson State. Houston last faced Jackson State in 2013 during a midweek nonconference game at Cougar Softball Stadium. ON FLORIDA GULF COAST Heading into the 2015 season, FCGU was selected to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference and are coming off a season. FCGU returns nine while welcoming 13 new freshmen to the team. Senior outfielder Kelsey Carpenter is the Eagles top returner and earned Preseason AllConference honors. Carpenter led the Eagles in 2014 with a.432 batting average. She also tallied 76 hits and 10 home runs and 51 RBI. This game will mark the first meeting of the two teams in program history. ON LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Liberty enters its second season under the direction of ASA Hall of Famer and Olympic Gold Medalist Dot Richardson. The Flames are coming off a tough 1146 (420) season. Senior second baseman Megan Robinson is the Flames top returner. She hit.303, while leading Liberty with 10 doubles and a.526 slugging average. She also tallied 46 hits, 26 RBI and eight home runs. This is also a first meeting for Houston and Liberty. ON SOUTH ALABAMA South Alabama enters the season ranked No. 23 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll and the USA Today/ National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Jaguars closed out the 2014 season with a 4214 (156) record, finishing second place to LouisianaLafayette in the Sun Belt Conference regular season, and appeared in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional final for the third consecutive season. USA returns eight position starters while only losing two. The top returning pitcher for the Jaguars is senior Farish Beard who posted a 1.23 ERA with a 227 record. She threw innings and only allowed 80 hits and recorded 224 strikeouts.

7 SAND DOLLAR CLASSIC (FEB. 68) GULF SHORES, ALA. 7 KYLAHOLAS HEAD COACH 15TH SEASON LOUISIANALAFAYETTE 94 Date of Birth: Oct. 4, 1971 Hometown: Pasadena, Texas Named UH Head Coach: 2001 THE KYLA HOLAS FILE EDUCATION University of LouisianaLafayette (formerly Southwestern Louisiana) Bachelor of Liberal Arts, 1994 Head coach Kyla Holas embarks on her 15th season at the helm of the Cougar softball program which she began constructing from scratch in In the program s 14 seasons, Houston has proven to be a mainstay at the top of the Conference USA standings on the way to national and regional prowess with 14 consecutive winning seasons, seven NCAA Regional appearances (2004, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and two NCAA Super Regional appearances (2008 and 2011). Recruiting players who want to win championships has been the key to our success, Holas said. It takes a very dedicated and disciplined person to fit into our program. We demand a lot from them in the details category. The girls on this team know the stakes and rise every day to meet the challenge. Under the direction of Holas, Houston has become a successful program that has posted a winning record each season since the inaugural year. At the conclusion of 2014, the Cougars have advanced to the NCAA postseason fourstraight seasons and six of the last 10 years. Since coming to Houston, Holas has worked endlessly to build a program focused on winning with high academic standards, something that is paramount to the studentathletes on the Cougar squad. The academic standards Holas has set for her team have also been a staple of the program and have only risen higher, along with the team GPA. Under her direction, Houston was awarded the CUSA Sport Academic Award (2012 and 2013) by posting the highest team GPA of any softball team in the conference. In the first year of the American Athletic Conference, Houston was awarded the conference Team Academic Excellence Award with a cumulative GPA of To get to the top, Holas doesn t let anything get overlooked. Her dynamic personality, work ethic and past accomplishments as a player and coach make the program s skyhigh outlook seem very realistic. Success comes by being obsessive about details, Holas said. The little things are what separates the AllAmericans from everyone else. NCAA s Houston has appeared in six NCAA regional tournaments and twice advanced to the NCAA Super Regional. After starting the program only three seasons earlier, the Cougars made it to their first postseason play in They would taste their first victory in NCAA play with a win over Texas A&MCorpus Christi while dropping games to No. 17 Illinois and Seton Hall. Houston returned to the postseason party in 2007, this time they won their first two games against No. 23 LouisianaLafayette and No. 7/8 Texas A&M. The Aggies would rally around their home field seed advantage as they took the next two games to eliminate the Cougars postseason dreams. The Cougars last two postseason appearances would prove to be the most successful as Houston won their regional bracket to advance to the Super Regionals. In 2008, Houston was host for the NCAA regional and Super Regional tournaments. The Cougars swept the competition in the regional by posting three wins over Delaware State and No. 25 Washington. The Cougars would split the first two games with LouisianaLafayette in the Super Regional before dropping the rubber match. The 2011 season saw Houston s second sweep of an NCAA Regional as Houston posted wins over LouisianaLafayette, No. 3 Texas and clinching the bid with another victory over the Cajuns. Houston advanced to the Stillwater Super Regional where they fell to Oklahoma State in a threegame series. Houston made it seven straight NCAA Regional wins in a row in 2012 with an openinggame victory over Auburn at the Austin Region. The Cougars dropped their next two games to Texas and Northwestern. Houston posted a 12 record in their thirdstraight NCAA appearance in The Cougars defeated Army 75 while falling to South Carolina and Texas in their thirdstraight Austin Regional series. The Cougars made it to their fourthstraight NCAA tournament in 2014 and attended the Baylor Regional in Waco, Texas. Houston dropped two games to former CUSA rival Tulsa to wrap up the regional Houston went 3323 and 138 in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference and wrapped up the season with a trip to the NCAA Regional in Waco for the fourth straight year. Houston took fourth place in the conference with a 138 record. The Cougars has recordsetting fielding season as they broke the season record for most assists (569) and most double plays (28). Senior Haley Outon ended her exceptional career at UH and was named Third Team AllAmercan and NFCA AllRegion. Outon became the sixth Cougar to sign a professional softball contract as she was named a member of the Akron Racers in the National Professional Fastpitch League.
