3 head coach rich maloney (#2) Rich Maloney returned as head coach of the Ball State baseball team for the 2013 season, having spent a previous stint coaching the Cardinals from In 2014, Maloney became the winningest coach in school history when he logged his 324th win with the Cardinals in a 4-1 win at Northern Illinois that clinched the Mid-American Conference Championship for Ball State. He enters the 2015 campaign with 667 career wins and 326 of those have come as head coach of the Cardinals. The 2014 season marked his second year back at the helm of the Cardinals, and Maloney has wasted no time bringing Ball State back to prominence. He coached the Cardinals to a overall record, a 22-4 MAC mark, the regular-season championship and now a preseason ranking of 31st in the nation heading into the 2015 season. Ball State s 22-4 (.846) conference winning percentage was the sixth highest in the nation in 2014, while the Cardinals 13-2 home record was the best for a Ball State team since going 13-2 in 2010 at Ball Diamond. Maloney was named the 2014 MAC Coach of the Year, marking the third time he has received the honor, and tutored the MAC Player of the Year (Sean Godfrey), the MAC Freshman Player of the Year (Jarett Rindfleisch) and the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year (Zach Plesac). In 2013, Maloney led Ball State to a overall record, a Mid- American Conference mark and an appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship Game. The record marked the eighth best turnaround in the NCAA from 2012 to 2013 and helped Ball State to a second-place finish in the MAC West Division. Maloney helped pitcher Scott Baker win the 2013 Gregg Olson Award as the nation s comeback player of the year and coached six members of the 2013 team to Academic All-MAC recognition. Prior to returning to Ball State, Maloney served as the head baseball coach at Michigan for 10 seasons, guiding the Wolverines to a overall record. He led Michigan to three Big Ten Conference titles, two Big Ten Tournament titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was also named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney also guided the Wolverines to Big Ten Tournament berths in seven of his 10 seasons, including a streak of six straight from His teams also made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). Prior to being named the head coach at Michigan, Maloney amassed a (.640) overall record in seven years as Ball State s head coach, including a (.701) ledger in MAC games. Maloney guided the Cardinals to four MAC West Division titles (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) and three MAC regular season championships (1998, 1999, 2001) in his first stint in Muncie, Ind. Maloney also led the Ball State baseball program to the only two 40-win seasons in program history in 1999 and 40 in and was named the 1998 and 2001 MAC Coach of the Year. Over his 19-year collegiate coaching career, Maloney has mentored 54 different players who have been drafted, including five first round draft picks, with all five playing at Ball State. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No.1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history in any sport when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Later the same day, Luke Hagerty was chosen with the 32nd overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in the supplemental first round, giving Maloney two first round draft picks in the same season. Maloney, and his wife, the former Kelle Lynn Seitz, have two sons -- Alex and Nicholas -- and one daughter, Natalie. Alex is a sophomore member of the Ball State baseball team.
