Hi Everyone Stu & Mary Ellen Hartt, Chapter AB-A Directors Seems everyone has been very busy and those in AB-A are no different. May finished with two days of ARC courses which were held in High River at the Fire Station. Thank you to the Fire Station for making their parking lot available to us. Everyone took advantage of this training time and special thanks to the trainers for all their time. June started with 2-Wheel Sunday which saw much activity in our booth. We had one individual that joined our monthly meeting after visiting our booth, Brent Premeast. We had guests, Shirley & David Ridley, who were riding through from Oregon and came to Sunday Breakfast before attending the 2-Wheel Sunday event. Nice to see people wanting to visit during their travels. On June 10 th we saw many members participate in various Cannonball runs, even though the weather did not cooperate that much. June 17 th saw riders participate in the Ride for Dad and we were proud to see two of our members, Ron Parkinson and Blair Nicholls heavily involved in running this event. Bob Van nes stated we had more riders participating at this year s event and (Continued on page 4) Jun 12 July 1 Jul 10 Jul Aug 4-6 Aug 4-7 Aug 14 Aug 29 Coming Events June Monthly Meeting Canada Day 150 Years July Monthly Meeting 150 Birthday Campout Region J Rally US Loop Ride Aug Monthly Meeting Wing Ding Meetings are at Fox Hollow Golf Club, 9th Street and 32nd Avenue N.E. 2 Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 2 The May meeting was attended by 57 members and guests. Eat Sleep Ride was attempting to organize the largest, global, synchronized motorcycle ride in history and set a Guinness world record. The attempt was to be May 27. UPDATE: On Sat. May 27th, 2017 at 07:00 PT 296 riders in 209 cities across 19 countries rode together in unison for motorcycle safety. You can check it out at eatsleepride.com/c/195598/ we_did_it_syncride_the_largest_global_synchronize d_motorcycle_ride_in_history Bobby Baum and his wife Wendy presented information about 2- Wheel Sunday and talked about how the show came to be. They explained about the desire to showcase the good side of motorcycling and separate the fun activity enjoyed by people from all walks of life from the perception of the criminal elements embodied in some motorcycle gangs. Barry Hort Roger Matas presented patches to members for achievements in the Levels Program. See the list of recipients and pictures taken on page 12 Harvey Matthews expressed his gratitude to all the club members who were able to attend his son s funeral. By doing so they showed their support for him and his family which they greatly appreciated. Ron Syroishka asked if, since the Banff Gran Fondo was cancelled, any members were interested in helping with the Whistler Gran Fondo. This would involve a three day commitment of time. won a Honda cap. Congratulations! Quartermaster, Jeff Webber, had some shirts available for members to try on for size if they wanted to purchase new shirts.

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 3 59 members and guests were in attendance. Four attendees were from the U.S.A., on their way to Alaska. They were John and Wanda Osborn from Austin, Texas (Chapter O) and Tim and Karen Hartly from Middleburg, Pennsylvania. The first picture below the couple from Pennsylvania is on the left. Tim and Karen were having mechanical problems with their trike. They got their Gold Book out and called our chapter. To the rescue came Stu Hartt, Bart Looijen, Tracy Boyda, and Gary Premech who dispatched the folks at Lazy Dawg, in Olds, to fix the problem. The problem was fixed and our guests are now very happy to be able to continue on their way to Alaska. The second picture below shows our guests with their AB-A helpers. Purdy s chocolates to Gord Saunders Bob Van nes spoke about the Ride for Dad and had a bucket where attendees could make a donation to the ride. A total of $124 was collected. Roger Matas presented two level 2 badges. The first one to Ron Parkinson. The second one to Suzanne Shaver who was also promised a high mileage pin for accumulating about 130,000 on her current motorcycle. Mary-Ellen Hartt received her Master badge from Alex Middleton. Two passes to Heritage Park to Kim Medcalf Alex Middleton asked all of the attendees with a master level to go the front of the room and be recognized as a group for that tremendous accomplishment. Two passes to Global Fest, won by Karen Hartly (from Pennsylvania) who decided to give them to Bart Looijen

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 4 (Continued from page 1) we look forward to increased numbers next year! Next day was our scheduled trip to Horseshoe Canyon for planned Helicopter Tours over the Canyon. Again, we had excellent participation even though it was on Father s Day. We even had four guests from other areas join us on this trip (Bruce & Donna from Victoria and Mark & tour of Yellowknife and area (separate article in the August Wing Wag) but we would be remiss not to mention Robin Weber of the NWTRA (North West Territories Riders Association) for their great hospitality and friendship on our visit. Then we finish the month with the planned BC Loop Ride sponsored by Gord and Brenda Stevenson. In addition, we had two couples traveling from the USA, John & Wanda and Tim & Karen, that had trike problems but AB-A jumped to their rescue. Bart Looijen went to Nanton and picked up their trike on his trailer and relocated it to the Balzac Campground, and Gary Premech helped pull their cargo trailer back to the city where they could pick it up later. Lazy Dawg Trikes picked up the trike, repaired it and returned it to them the next day and we then saw them at our monthly meeting expressing their thanks to our entire Chapter. I continue to be impressed with our membership and their commitment to helping out whenever needed. WOW, what a busy month and it only carries on from there with the Region J Rally in Fort Langley. Make sure you are registered if you are planning to attend and then travel to Texas for Wing Ding or the 3-Flags events. Patty for AZ-D in Mesa Arizona along with Spirit their mascot). Then we had five members do a Be safe out there, Stu & Mary-Ellen Hartt Calgary Chapter Directors Text and Photos by Stu Hartt and Alan Orr Six members did a ride for lunch to Radium BC. The ride was sponsored by Bob Van Nes and it was a beautiful day for a ride. In addition to Bob, Alan Orr, Ron Shyoishka, Jack O'Reilly, Gord Saunders and Stu Hartt enjoyed the day.

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 5 Roger Matas, Chapter AB-A Rider Educator GWRRA ensures all its members who provide education to other members meet a certain standard. This is done through the Gold Wing University program. The training curriculum focuses on leadership skills while understanding knowledge is an enabler of those skills. Though some of the training deals specifically with skills needed in a GWRRA leadership position, other training deals with life skills and member orientation topics which will enhance the member s life both within and outside of GWRRA. In general, our training is designed to reach visual, verbal, and kinetic learners; our goal is something for everyone. It is the intent of to deliver training in a professional manner and to ensure training is a fun learning experience for all participants. Certification is done through the Instructor Trainer Certification Program and is conducted usually on a regional level. In May, 2017, Region J sponsored an ITCP course in Calgary. Members attended from Saskatoon Edmonton and Calgary and were certified as Gold Wing University Instructors. As well, Region J Director Susan Premech was certified as an ITCP Instructor Trainer. The first in Canada. At right below she is congratulated by GWRRA Director of Training Clara Bolt. GWRRA also provides an Officer Certification Program which is available to all members to provide information on the structure, policies and programs of GWRRA. Its main objective is to assist officers in the following responsibilities: Finances, Membership Enhancement. Rider Ed, Teambuilding, Conflict Resolution, and Goal Setting, to name a few. Also in May 2017, 10 members of Chapter AB-A and one from AB-L in Lethbridge successfully took the course. In addition, Susan Premech and Chapter AB-A Rider Education Coordinator Roger Matas were certified as OCP instructors. Our GWRRA member, Sandy Morrison, has lost his brother in recent months. On May 2, 2017, Dr. Bob Morrison was one six passengers in a rented SUV and one of three passengers to die in an automobile accident north of Prague in the Czech Republic. Sandy s sister-in-law, travelling with her husband, was also critically injured in the same accident. Dr. Morrison is sadly missed by all his family. As a gifted veterinary researcher and professor at the University of Minnesota, his loss will also be felt by the global Swine Industry.

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 6 Gary & Susan Premech, Region J Director Hello everyone, Well folks, the Region J Rally in Fort Langley, BC August 4 6 is coming up in less than two months and you still have time to register if you haven t done so already. We will be finalizing the order for the shirts, hoodies, pins and Saturday dinner in June if you re still planning to attend. Also, if you re looking for something to do towards the end of summer, come celebrate with us at GWRRA s 40 th year in business at Wing Ding in Grapevine Texas, August 29 th to September 2 nd. Your Chapter Needs You!! Did you know that you are the perfect candidate for one of the chapter executive positions and didn t even know it? You are no different than the person that is looking after the chapter right now, they too were unsure about being involved until they accepted the position. Talk to your current Chapter Directors, Assistant Chapter Directors, Treasurer, Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Ride Coordinator, Entertainment Coordinator or whatever other position your chapter may hold. Not all chapters have the capability of having all the positions that larger chapters have, but the involvement is still there. Don t be afraid of being stuck in the position without anyone to take over, as your predecessors felt the same way, and the same as those before them. There are a couple of chapter directors that are wanting to step down this year and the best position to take over is the assistant chapter director. Your current chapter directors have set the path for you to follow so it s easy. Taking the Officer Certification Program (OCP) will help you understand the GRA workings and how a chapter should run. Take a chance and follow the others who have gone before you and held an executive position in your chapter. Trust me, it s a lot of fun. Until next month. Hello everyone, Well folks, the Region J Rally in Fort Langley, BC on August 4 6 is coming up quickly and the registration numbers have been low. Is it time for a change? Are you looking for something different instead of the traditional Region Rally we have known in the past? Does it have to be on a long weekend when the roads, cities, towns, hotels, and campsites are at their busiest? At one time the rallies were the only time that you were able to take the ARC or MFA courses. However, now with more trainers available, these courses along with the ITCP and OCP can be brought to your location if there is the required demand. Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia have these trainers available, and although Yukon and Alaska are a fair distance to travel, training could be setup for these locations on a limited basis. Your Region team and all the volunteers that help out at these rallies put a lot of effort into putting on an event that brings our Region membership together once a year. We would ask you to give it some thought. We will have a questionnaire out soon that we would like you, as a member, to fill out so you can let us know what you are looking for. Is there something you ve heard or seen that other regions are doing that caught your interest. Think about it and we look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Until next month.

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 7 Greeting Cards: If you know of any member, their spouse, or immediate family who would appreciate receiving a greeting card from our Chapter please contact Judy Istvan, address nucleus.com. Bring your non-perishable food items or monetary contributions to the Monthly Chapter Meetings and help support the Veteran's Food Bank. Thank you to all who choose to support this worthwhile cause. High Mileage Challenge 2017: It s time to start the 2017 Distance Challenge. Brian Hooker Call: or telus.net Planning and information by Gord and Brenda Stevenson H ere are the plans for a second trip. This one is the US Loop. The first night will be in Creston; second night in Coeur d'alene (we will swing through Yaak and Libby); and third night in Kalispell (via Murray). Hotels are a bit painful for this trip. Sorry about that! In Creston, the Ramada was full online. I phoned and got a room, but clearly they were pretty full. We may have to spread out to other hotels in the area, and since there must be events going on I strongly suggest booking something soon. Please let me know if you will join the ride so I can create a distribution list for future communications related to this ride. As always, let me know if you want your contact information hidden from other participants. Please contact Gord and Brenda Stevenson at (403) or by at gordstevenson.com for further details including the ride overview (ppt and pdf), Microsoft Streets and Trips, and GPX (for GPS) files. Let's ride!

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 10 Text by: Gord Stevenson, Chapter AB-A Member I have been running a Micheline Alpin car tire on the rear for a few years. Although I have been happy to share experience verbally I have delayed sharing in writing because it is a divisive topic...but it is time. The primary reason we went to the car tire is because we often run two up with luggage and we have had two motorcycle tire (MT) delaminations plus other MTs that required early replacement. So, the reason is entirely for the safety of heavier load capacity and the run flat capability. Cost savings and additional traction are side benefits but did not factor into the decision. I have a 2012 GL1800 ABS, and a friend bought a They are identical except the year and the color...and of course his bike had the stock MT. That summer we did 4,000 miles (6400 Kms) together including an Iron Butt Highways, twisties, sweepers, everything...riding mostly about 2-3 seconds apart. We have fun but are not extremely aggressive. Neither of us are inclined to push the limits. Spirited, yes...edge of safety, no. You don't get a much better comparison than that. Over those 4,000 miles there were two occasions where he lost traction in a significant way and I did not. One was in slippery mud in a construction zone on the "Going to the Sun" road in Glacier Park (Montana). The other was on icy bridges in Wyoming on the Iron Butt run at 5-6am in early October. The temperature was just at the freezing point. Since then on a recent group ride in northern Oregon with 4 other bikes, we were on a winding paved forestry trunk road. I was leading. The riders behind me started chatting over the CB about a spray of fine sand being visible coming off the back tires of the bikes in front of them. I had no loss of traction. When we stopped for a break it was an interesting discussion. Those of us with car tires had no issue. Those with the MTs felt some slipping. I initially thought that a price I would pay for the CT would be higher fuel consumption. Of course for the Iron Butt run we had to document the full ride carefully with fuel receipts and mileage recordings. Over 1500 miles our fuel consumption was almost identical. So no penalty there either. Some report that CTs are a bit more susceptible to "bump steer" when riding slowly over a rough surface. Maybe. Theoretically it makes sense. I would have to go back and forth over the same road trying both to be sure. I would guess there would be a small difference but it sure hasn't been an issue. My friend with the 2013 and MT? Mr. Skeptical put a Micheline Alpin on his bike last year and is now a convert. He does report a bit of increased "bump steer" and concludes that it takes 15 minutes to adjust. Some have concerns related to using tires that are not designed for a motorcycle, and that is understandable. I had concerns too and did a lot of reading on it before trying one. There is a sub-forum related to Gl1800riders that discusses it in incredible detail, and one of the discussion leaders tracks those choosing to register use of car tires. I registered with him and was issued a registration number of something like That means there were 1600 others who registered before me, and that was a few years ago. With all those people registering usage there were zero incidents attributed to using a car tire, but many saying they had avoided an incident because they were using a car tire with "run flat" or "zero pressure" capabilities. We use a Michelin Alpin PA3 (Continued on page 11)

Wing Wag June/July 2017 Page 11 (Continued from page 10) that has run flat characteristic for that reason. This is certainly not a religion with me. If somebody comes out with a serious MT that performs as well, AND is "properly made and tested for the bike" I will probably switch. Until then I feel safer with the CT. Much safer. We have also been using a BT-45 on the front. It is a motorcycle tire, but intended as a back tire for other bikes. A portion of the car tire fraternity likes the BT-45 as a front tire. It is not a run flat or ZP tire but is heavier and has deeper tread so it seems to be tougher and lasts longer. We are on our second BT-45. I like it ok, and appreciate the longevity but frankly didn't really think there was a problem with the regular front tires. So, we will probably continue with it but I do not feel nearly as strongly about the benefits as I do regarding the rear tire. If you do want to try the Michelin Alpin PA3, I use the standard rear tire size (same size as the normal MC tires) and have been buying them online from Canadian Tire for pick up at a local store. Cost is about the same as a MC tire, but they last % longer. I have ordered the BT-45s online for home delivery. Please take this as simple sharing of experience. I am not trying to convince anyone. I would, however like to hear your experiences. Cheers! Editor s Note: GWRRA and its member Chapters do not endorse or recommend the use of car tires on any motorcycle. The choice to undertake such use is the sole responsibility of the rider/owner. This article is written by a GWRRA Member about his personal opinions and experiences. Text and Phot by: Stu Hartt, Chapter AB-A Director GWRRA Chapter AB-A in Calgary had a booth set up during Rocky Mountain Powerhouse Honda Demo Days. Many people had a chance to demo a big selection of various Honda motorcycles. Special thanks to members involved including Carol Myers, Lance Metcalf, Ron Parkinson, Ron Syroishka, Tracy Boyda for their work in promoting GWRRA.
