Welcome and Introduction of New Members Discussion Minutes Don welcomed everyone and introduced two new members Kathryn Cosentino and James Schofield and asked them to share a little about themselves. Jo-Anne noted that new members can participate fully in discussions and at events but will not have voting privileges until their appointments are ratified by Council in the fall. Results/ Action 2. Declarations of Interest and Approval of minutes 3. Chair s Update Don thanked everyone for their kind words, thoughts and prayers in the loss of his son s girlfriend. Don advised that he participated in a ride put on by MEC on No declarations of interest. On motion, the minutes of May 26, 2015 were approved as presented. Page 1 of 5
2 June 22 at 9:30 p.m. to honour one of their colleagues, Adam Excell, who was killed in Toronto while cycling. Don advised that there were only three people who participated in his Ward 1 Ride but noted that it was a very good education for Councillor Craven. Don stated that the Joint Cycling Committee meeting in Grimsby on May 30 was very well attended and had larger participation from area municipalities. Milton will host next year s meeting at the Velodrome. Don advised, with regret, that he had received Bert Armstrong s resignation due to some health issues. 4. Transportation Update Dan provided the following update: Waiting for Gene and his crew to get the go ahead to install the Bike Share station across from Pepperwoods the location is clear and ready to go. Looking for some member participation in the Pop-up Ivan Roll with Us event being held on July 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. starting out at Mountainside Recreation Centre. Joseph Brant Day Festival on August 3 will have a Pan Am Games theme and asked if there was any interest from the committee to have a table at this event. Would need approximately 4 people Jeremy, Jackie, Chris and Joseph volunteered. Transportation staff will be attending 7 camps held at Museums of Burlington in July and August to educate kids on bike safety. Transportation staff will be at 7 Movies Under the Stars events in July and August with giveaways and to educate kids on bike safety. Met with Eleanor McMahon, MPP, on June 19 to discuss the QEW interchanges and asked for the Province s support for a safe cycling route over the highway at Walker s and Guelph Lines similar to bike lanes by Ikea. Eleanor fully supports this and is waiting to hear back from the Minister s Page 2 of 5
3 office. Teaming up with Hamilton Burlington Trails Council to have a cycling app for Hamilton/Burlington which could be downloaded by social cyclists and allow data to be tracked. Five schools participated in Bike to School Week and all schools had an increase in ridership which continued to the end of the school year. Transportation will be providing each school with a bike rack in September and will make an event of it. Transportation looking at showing the movie Bike City, Great City at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre in September. Possibility for committee to have a table at this event. Asked members to contact him with any ideas. Looking at partnering with the police to hold a Bike Rodeo in September. Location and details to be confirmed. Talking with Halton Hills regarding a Bike Challenge in Spring Greenbelt signage is complete now installing signage for connector route connecting Greenbelt and Waterfront. Bike Corral on Martha Street was well used during the Sound of Music Festival have installed a boulder on either side for protection. Don thanked Dan for all of the great work that Transportation Services is doing to promote cycling in the community. 5. Regional Health Department Update Kendra provided the following update: Advised of the Can-Bike cycling safety program that provides a nationally standardized set of courses that can be taught through a variety of organizations who are interested in education, safety and health. This could be a future opportunity for the committee. Region s Active Transportation Master Plan has been delayed. Attended the City s Transportation Master Plan workshop and noted that the Health Department provided assistance on some statistics. Healthy Community Partnership funding is over. Page 3 of 5
4 Complete Streets Forum 2015 will be held on October 1 at the University of Toronto. Trails Conference held on June 7 went well. Hosting again next year and asked if committee would like to have a presence. Hamilton Burlington Trails Council is looking for volunteers to conduct on trail surveys to assist in the design of an effective urban trail network. 6. Sub-Committee Updates Communication & Events: No Report. Infrastructure: Chris advised that he had the opportunity to review and comment on the Region s EA Study for Dundas Street from Brant Street to Bronte Road and noted that there are safety issues regarding design speed. There will be further opportunity to comment. Chris advised that he submitted a memo to the Development & Infrastructure Committee meeting of June 15 recommending that a small bike rack be included in the Windows-to-the-Lake development plan, but unfortunately it was not approved. Chris stated that he will be meeting with Kaylan in Transportation Services to provide some input/comment on the Transportation Master Plan. 7. Other Business Discussion took place regarding the cancellation of the July 28 meeting so members could participate in the Pop-up Ivan Roll with Us event being held on July 27. Don indicated that the committee s t-shirt supply has depleted and asked for a motion for this expenditure. On motion, the committee approved the cancellation of the July 28 meeting so members could participate in the Roll with Us event on July 27. On motion, the committee approved the expenditure of $120 to purchase 15 t-shirts for committee members to Page 4 of 5
