4 Project Objective & Goals Project Objective Evaluate multimodal corridor improvements that provide connectivity, livability, and complete streets concepts to meet future transportation demand. 1 Evaluate existing transportation conditions and identify deficiencies Project Goals 2 3 Develop future traffic volume and transit ridership forecasts Identify and evaluate improvements to address mobility needs 4 Develop an action plan with a prioritized list of short term multimodal improvements 4

7 Project Background Originally named Bird Avenue after the prominent Bird Family that lived in Coconut Grove Major east-west principal arterial within central Miami-Dade County Facilitates both local and regional trips from high-density residential areas in the west to employment centers located east SR 826/Palmetto Interchange (1961) Serves as an alternate route to SW 88th Street/Kendall Drive and SW 8th Street/Tamiami Trail Provides access to two major north-south expressways, i.e. SR 821/HEFT and SR 826/Palmetto Expressway Local attractions include Bird Bowl, Tropical Park and Biltmore Golf course and hotel Bird Bowl (1956) 7

8 Project Background Existing traffic along corridor varies from 32,700 vehicles per day (vpd) to 68,700 vpd. Bus Route 40 is the main route along corridor with average weekday ridership of 2,115 passengers Corridor issues identified: Congestion at major intersections Access management and safety concerns High off-peak vehicular speeds Lack of adequate transit facilities Reliability of MDT Transit Route 40 Lack of bicycle facilities and connections to trails and recreational facilities Pedestrian crossing concerns across Bird Road Safety concerns about crossings for Coral Gables High School Students 8
