1 Maine Trail Riders Gt6 Association, Inc. September Volume H FBEATS Official Newsletter of The M T R A THE NEXT MEETING IS FRIDAY, SEPT 14, 2012 Officers: Trudy Bickford, President Audrey Colfer, Vice-President Donna LeBlond, Secretary Cathy Small, Treasurer Board of Directors: Nancy Weeks 2014 Vicky Dixon 2014 Sally Labree Brenda Lary 2013 Dana Lary 2013 Nora MacDonald 2013 Melissa Bourgoin 2013 (exefficio) Donna Tripp 2012 Julie Anderson Cathy Small 2012 Sandy Craig 2012 (ex-efficio) President s Stall Thank you to everyone that helped at the Topsham Fair Horse Show. With the new format including jumps this year, there was concern that time and help would be an issue. But all went well, we raised some funds for the club, and volunteers and participants all seemed have a good time. This month s schedule changes to take note of are the Harris Knowlton Ride has been cancelled for Labor Day Weekend. In its place there are now three separate rides, with camping available Saturday and Sunday nights in West Gardiner. The September 1 st ride will be in Pittston, the September 2 nd ride will be in West Gardiner, and the September 3 rd ride will be at Mt. Pisgah. Also, please take note that the September meeting will be held on Friday, September 14 th instead of the Saturday of the weekend ride. This was done as attempts are made to bring in entertainment and have Saturday of the ride be fun and relaxing instead of club business. In case some of you are wondering what is happening with me, I have had surgery and am now on the road to recovery. Thank you for all your well wishes! Good vibes from everyone were good and have helped me through this. Unfortunately, it will be a bit longer before I can ride, but the recovery is progressing, the mass that was inside me is benign and gone, I am eating and getting my strength back. I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather! See you at some upcoming events. Trudy

Sooooo here s what I came up with (Nancy):
3 3 September 2012 HOOFBEATS Saturday, Sept 1 st, Pittston ride will start at 10:00 from a hay field off Blodgett road. The ride will consist of about a mile of dead end tar road, then about half a mile on the Kelley road then onto a private gravel road with a small woods trail loop. Lunch will be at Nehumkeag pond. Dogs are welcome but they will have to be leashed for the first and last 1.5 miles of tar road. Ride will be about 4 hours. Bring your own lunch on the trail. Directions: from Randolph, go south on Route 27 towards Dresden for about 4 miles. Just over the crest of a hill, turn left onto Kelly Road. Go about 2 miles and turn right onto Blodgett Road. Go about a mile to a hay field on the left where we will be parking. After the ride is finished, those who would like to camp can continue to Gary and Marie Qunital s field across from Cathy Small s house off Spears Corner Road in West Gardiner. We got rained out this summer so we are going to try it again. The field has a nice pond. There will be a Saturday night pot luck supper at 6:00pm. Directions for the camping site: return to Randolph, take left at light and cross Kennebec River. At the lights at the end of the bridge, go straight. At the next set of lights, turn right onto route 126. go about 3 miles, cross over 295 and 95 and past the West Gardiner plaza. After the turnpike plaza, continue 2.5 miles to blinking yellow light after Larrabee Marine on right. Turn right onto Spears Corner road, go about half a mile and turn right onto gravel road. Parking is in the big open field with a pond. September 2 West Gardiner Ride sponsored by Nancy Weeks ( ): 10:00am ride time. We will ride from the overnight camp site in West Gardiner along the network of trail that Cathy Small usually leads (and may again if she gets back from her trip in time). Otherwise, I will cover about 4 hours of trail. Dogs are welcome but there is 1 road crossing going out and coming back. Bring your own lunch on the trail. Directions: For those coming in that morning from route 126 in West Gardiner, turn at the blinking light onto Spears Corner road (right if coming from Gardiner, left if coming from Litchfield. Go about half a mile on Spears Corner road to a dirt road on right. Follow road to field back in the woods. You can camp again Sunday night with a pizza party at 6:00. We will be ordering from one of the local stores. Bring your own beverage. September 3 Mt. Pisgah Ride sponsored by Sally Labree ( ): The Mt. Pisgah ride is about 4 hours long. There is an uphill climb at the beginning (no stairs this year!) The trail is rocky in places, so please plan on that. Pack food and drink as lunch will be on the trail. This year the ride is leaving at 9:30 from the North Monmouth Fire station. Directions: From the South, take Rt. 202 towards Augusta. At the intersection of Rt. 202 and Blaisdell Road, take a left onto Blaisdell.(just before the intersection is an RV repair shop, look for the campers). Follow Blaisdell Road until you come to a stop sign. Go Right, travel for 1/2 mile and the fire station will be on your Right. From the North, take Rt.202 towards Lewiston. Pass thru Winthrop and watch for Knowles Lumber on your Right. After you pass Knowles lumber, travel about 3/4 mile to Blaisdell Road, which will be on your right just before the RV Camper shop. Turn Right onto Blaisdell Road, go to the stop sign. Go Right, travel for 1/2 mile and the fire station will be on your Right. We are HOPING for a sunny ride this year, See you there!!! Questions, call Sally at
