5 METHODOLOGY The 2014 Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract is a comprehensive summary of statistics on the recreational boating industry in the United States. The data herein has been collected by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) from a variety of sources, including primary research studies commissioned by the NMMA Industry Statistics & Research Department. Participation Study (Section 1) Internet survey of 3,100 nationally representative households to measure incidence rates of various levels of boating participation conducted annually in the Fall/Winter. The study was conducted by the Recreational Marine Research Center prior to 2010 and conducted by Foresight Research henceforth, using the Survey Sampling Inc. panel. Ownership Study (Section 2) Internet survey of 3,100 nationally representative households and an oversample of 2,000 boat owners to measure incidence rates of various levels of boat ownership conducted annually in the Fall/Winter. The study was conducted by the Recreational Marine Research Center prior to 2010 and conducted by Foresight Research henceforth using the Survey Sampling Inc. panel. Economic Impact Study (Section 3) Study conducted by the Recreational Marine Research Center in 2012 based on an input-output economic model (IMPLAN) to estimate the impact boating has state economies. NMMA plans to replicate this study every 3 5 years, with the next update slated for Pre-Owned Study (Section 5) Study conducted annually by Info-Link, estimating sales (units and dollars) of pre-owned boats based on state registrations of recreational boats. Registration/Documented Vessel (Section 7) Registrations of recreational boats are collected by the states and aggregated by the Coast Guard that uses the data to allocate funds from the Aquatic Resources Trust. Documented vessels are part of a national registration administered separately by the USCG. Export/Import (Section 8) U.S. international trade statistics are collected by the U.S. Department of Commerce and reported to the U.S. International Trade Commission. The export and import data is analyzed by harmonized tariff schedule codes specific to recreational boats and marine engines. Accessory Study (Section 19) Internet survey of 3,000 U.S. boat owning households to measure accessory buying behavior. Survey is conducted by Foresight Research annually in the Fall/Winter using a national internet panel. Retail Market (Section 4) Estimates of retail unit and dollar sales are derived from new boat registrations and average prices reported by NMMA s control group of boat manufacturers NMMA All rights reserved. 18 U.S. Boating Industry Forecasts Sales Momentum into Summer New data show recreational boating is a $36.7 billion industry, versatile boats leading recovery 5/20/ :00:00 AM General NMMA News CHICAGO May 20, 2014 The National Marine Manufacturers Association today announced that the recreational boating industry saw healthy growth in 2013, generating $36.7 billion in retail expenditures (new and pre-owned boats and engines, trailers, accessories and services), a 3.2% increase from An estimated 166,800 new powerboats and sailboats were sold at retail in 2013, an increase of 2.2%, coming on the heels of the industry s 2012 rebound when new powerboat and sailboat retail sales increased 10.7% - the industry s first sign of recovery. The NMMA is anticipating continued momentum with an additional 5-7% increase in retail sales of new boats in2014. The NMMA released these findings as part of its U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract, an annual collection of data and analysis on the state of the U.S. recreational boating industry being released June 1. As the nation s economic recovery matures and boating businesses prepare for summer, a peak selling season for recreational boats, accessories and services, we expect to see continued stable growth in sales, noted NMMA President Thom Dammrich. Following a year of inclement weather throughout the U.S. driving pent-up demand and Americans taking to the water in record numbers, the industry is primed for a busy selling season. Versatile boats leading recovery, driving industry innovation Ski and wakeboard boats, as well as fiberglass and aluminum outboard boats, led the industry s growth in Ski and wakeboard boats continue to grow in popularity, with an 11% increase in the number of new boats sold at retail in 2013 to 6,100 units; outboard boats (pontoons, fishing boats and small family cruisers) were the most popular type of new powerboat sold in 2013, comprising approximately 84% of the powerboat market and up 5% to 134,800 units. Additionally, the personal watercraft (PWC) category increased 2% compared to 2012 with 39,400 new craft sold at retail; and inboard cruisers leapt in retail sales 10% compared to the previous year with 2,200 new units sold in 2013.

19 What s more, 2013 was the first time since pre-recession (2009) that the ratio of preowned boat to new boat sales decreased, indicating a shift in consumer demand for new boats. In 2013, we saw more manufacturers producing innovative boats that offer an entry into the boating lifestyle at a variety of price points. A trend in boat manufacturing is the versatile boat one that can pull tubers or wake boarders, be used for fishing outings, relaxing with the family or entertaining, noted Dammrich. We re seeing manufacturers shift their manufacturing processes, becoming leaner and more efficient, to be able to offer these innovative boats at a lower cost, in turn introducing more people to boating. Across the board, the boating industry recognizes the demand of the 88.5 million Americans who go boating and want to own a boat of their own and pass their water gene on to future generations. U.S. recreational boating by the numbers Americans are taking to the water in record numbers: Of the million adults in the US in 2013, 36.6%, or 88.5 million, participated in recreational boating at least once during 2013 the second highest percentage on record. Fishing remains the most popular activity current participants engaged in while boating during Nearly 6 of 10 (57.8%) fished while boating while 19.3% canoed, followed by tubing (17.8%) and water-skiing (14.6%). Boating is uniquely American: 95% of the boats sold in the U.S. are made in the U.S. 95% of boats on the water are 26 feet or less boats that can be trailered by a vehicle to local waterways. 71% of boat owners have a household income less than $100,000. Leading the nation in sales of new powerboat, motor, trailer and accessories, the top ten boating states in 2013 are: 1. Florida: $1,957,381,303, up 16% from Texas: $1,176,972,535, down 2% from Michigan: $656,110,750, up 2% from Delaware: $574,322,347, up 19% from Minnesota: $557,268,790, up 1% from New York: $552,188,643, up 3% from Wisconsin: $518,942,061, flat compared to 2012

20 8. North Carolina: $508,241,300, up 4% from Louisiana: $477,725,606, down 5% from California: $431,696,279, up 18% from 2012 Recreational Boating is $121 Billion Economic Driver for U.S. New data show 88 million Americans expected to take to U.S. waterways this summer 6/11/ :00:00 AM General NMMA News CHICAGO June 11, 2013 The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), today announced that recreational boating in the U.S. has an annual economic value of $121.5 billion. The industry s rising tide supports 964,000 induced, direct, and indirect American jobs, 338,526 direct jobs at 34,833 businesses, and $83 billion in direct, indirect and induced spending each year. The NMMA, on behalf of the U.S. boating industry, released these findings today as part of its annual U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract, a collection of data and analysis on the state of the U.S. recreational boating industry. Additional data highlights include: New Boat Sales Trends Retail sales of new power and sailboats increased 10.7 percent in 2012 to 163,245, demonstrating a post-recession recovery for the industry. (Note that this number includes inboard, outboard, sterndrive, jet and sail boats). o New powerboat (inboard, outboard, sterndrive and jet boat) sales increased 10 percent to 157,300 in o New sailboat sales increased 29.2 percent to 5,945 in 2012 Small fiberglass and aluminum outboard boats 26 feet or less in size, continued their upward climb with an 11.3 percent increase in the number of new boats sold. Outboard boats are the most popular type of new powerboat sold, making up approximately 82 percent of the market. Ski and wakeboard boats are seeing healthy growth with an increase of 13.4 percent new boats sold in Jet boats, which are small fiberglass boats less than 26 feet in length, are a growing category. Of the 157,300 new powerboats sold in 2012, 4,500 were jet boats. New jet boat sales increased 36.4% in 2012.

21 What s Ahead Sales of new powerboats have remained steady during the first half of 2013 and continued growth is expected with the summer boating season. NMMA anticipates sales of new powerboats to grow five percent in Summer is a peak selling season for recreational boats, accessories and services throughout the U.S. as people look for ways to disconnect from the daily grind and enjoy fun times on the water, said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. New boat sales have historically been a barometer for the U.S. economy and the steady sales increases we re seeing is being reinforced by the slow uptick in consumer confidence, housing and spending. As economic growth continues, we anticipate sustained steady growth through the remainder of Boating Participation Of the estimated million adults in the U.S. in 2012, 37.8 percent, or 88 million, participated in recreational boating at least once during the year. This is a six percent increase from 2011 and the largest number of U.S. adults participating in boating since NMMA began collecting the data in Recreational boating participation has steadily increased since Helping People Discover Boating Growing participation is a priority for the recreational boating industry as it drives new boat sales. Boat manufacturers, dealers, marinas, and other marine organizations joined together to form Discover Boating, a consumer program to grow participation and create a positive boating experience. The North American effort provides resources to help those interested in boating get started and promotes the fun of the boating lifestyle through a national marketing campaign.
