1 COMPETITION INFORMATION IT S EASY TO ENTER All Entry Forms must be postmarked by June 22, 2017 No Entry Fee DROP OFF ENTRIES: Saturday, July 15, from 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Bring all entries to (unless otherwise specified). PICK UP ENTRIES: Tuesday, September 26, from 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. only. You MUST pick up your entries on this day from. There are no exceptions to this rule. Bring your claim checks (which you will receive at time of entry dropoff). All entries not removed on September 26, 2017, will be disposed of or donated by the Fair. EXHIBITOR S RESPONSIBILITY: The LA County Fair assumes NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE TO ENTRIES, WHATEVER THE CAUSE. Entering an exhibit implies acceptance of this rule. JUDGING: All divisions and classes shall be judged under the Danish System of Judging, unless otherwise indicated. The Danish System of Judging is based upon established standards of quality for each type of product. In this system, each entry is judged according to how well it meets these standards rather than how it compares with the other entries. PLEASE NOTE: Not every entry is guaranteed to win an award and not every entry will be displayed. Entries that do not meet the specific rules and requirements as described will not be displayed. Entries containing content that is deemed inappropriate for a children s exhibit will not be displayed. Competitions are open to all children age 3-18 (preschool through high school) as indicated on individual contest descriptions and rules. Exhibitors may enter only one item in each class (category), unless otherwise stated. Entry forms: Must be filled out completely or they will not be accepted. Print neatly: Names that are misspelled on display tags due to illegible writing on entry forms will not be reprinted. All entries must be the work of the exhibitor. Photos must have been taken by the exhibitor. A parent, leader, or responsible adult must verify this fact by signing the entry form. You must use a separate entry form for each exhibitor and a separate line for each entry. All entries must have been created after July, All displayed entries will remain on display for the duration of the Fair, unless otherwise specified. Photocopy your entry form for your records. NO ENTRY CONFIRMATION WILL BE SENT, unless otherwise noted. Due to limited space, you will receive a letter notifying you of your acceptance into Hobby Collections ONLY. Please make sure to check the display area indicated for the competition you are entering. Entries may be displayed in America s Kids (Expo Hall 5) or FairView Farms. Use of paraffin or use of jars other than standard will disqualify exhibit. Standard jar: Container specifically designed for canning. Screw rings and seals must be used. 5 APPLES, APPLES EVERYWHERE! Apple Recipe Contest DIVISION 3165 Contest date and time: Sunday, September 3rd. Bring in entry from 3:00 p.m- 3:30 p.m. to the Farmhouse Kitchen in The Farm. For some mysterious reason, apples are often a recurring theme or symbol in many stories around the world. Maybe it s because they re so incredibly versatile...and yummy! Enter your favorite dish that uses apples as a main ingredient. Cooked, baked, chopped, pressed, dipped...anything goes! Bring in your apple dish to the Farmhouse Kitchen. Sweet or savory dishes are both allowed. Entry will be judged on taste, appearance, and use of apples. Bring your recipe with your entry. CHOCOLATE RECIPE CONTEST DIVISION 3173 Contest date and time: Friday, September 8 th. Bring in entry from 6:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to the Farmhouse Kitchen in The Farm. Let s celebrate Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with one of (almost) everybody s favorite flavors chocolate! Choose your best chocolate recipe; cookie, cake, pie, bread anything goes as long as one of the ingredients is chocolate. Sweet or savory dishes are both allowed. Entry will be judged on taste, appearance, and use of chocolate. Any recipes are acceptable, including no cook recipes such as dips, etc. Bring your recipe with your entry. Bring in entry from 3:00 p.m- 3:30 p.m. to the Farmhouse Kitchen in The Farm. Immerse yourself in the tropical settings of Treasure Island and The Swiss Family Robinson by creating a dish using one (or two) of the most quintessentially tropical ingredients ever coconut and pineapple! Anything goes as long as coconut and/or pineapple is included in the ingredients. Bring in your favorite coconut and/or pineapple dish to the Farmhouse Kitchen. Bring your recipe with your entry. Entry will be judged on taste, appearance, and use of coconut and/or pineapple. 6 BOOK FOOD DIVISION 3182 Contest date and time: Saturday, September 16 th. Bring in entry from 3:00 p.m- 3:30 p.m. to the Farmhouse Kitchen in The Farm. Have you ever wondered about the delicious-sounding dishes described in some books? Treacle Tarts in Harry Potter, Liniment Cake (without the liniment, of course) in Anne of Green Gables, or Cheesy Buns in Catching Fire just to name a few. Choose your favorite bookinspired recipe for this competition. It takes a little extra thought, but what a fun way to combine a love of books with a love of food! Bring in your favorite book-food dish to the Farmhouse Kitchen between 3:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sweet or savory dishes are both allowed. Required - Bring a note-card with the passage that mentions the food you have chosen along with the title and author of book. Bring in entry from 6:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. to the Farmhouse Kitchen in The Farm. Decorate a cake using any literature-inspired theme ideas: books, book characters, famous fictional settings, etc...you decide! Entries judged on cake decoration ONLY. Cakes will not be tasted or cut, and will be judged on appearance only. You may choose to bake your own cake or use a store-bought cake. Cake can be any shape but cannot be any larger than a 9 x 13 baking pan size. For practical reasons, no more than two tiers will be allowed. Any kind of cake decoration may be used. Anything goes - be creative! Bring your assembled cake with a list of decoration ingredients to the Farmhouse Kitchen. 7 FAVORITE MEMORY DIVISION 3181 Contest date and time: Sunday, September 24 th. Bring in entry from 3:00 p.m- 3:30 p.m. to the Farmhouse Kitchen in The Farm. Prepare a recipe that has been inspired by one of your favorite memories a vacation, a holiday, a weekend with Grandma, or just a special time at home. Along with your recipe, please submit a 3 x 5 index card describing your dish and a few paragraphs describing what memory inspired you. Any recipes are acceptable, including no cook dishes such as salads, dips, etc. Entries judged on taste, ingredients, originality, and use of contest theme (favorite memory). No foam core. Construction paper OK if laminated. Canvas and canvas boards do not need to be mounted. Maximum size: 16 x 20, including matting. Use crayons, markers, colored pencils, or finger paint. Pictures will be judged on originality, creativity, and appearance. Put your best coloring skills to work with this Treasure Island-inspired coloring contest! Print the attached drawing on 8 ½ x 11 white paper or cardstock. NO FOAM CORE. Do NOT attach coloring page to any type of backing such as construction paper, matboard, foam core, etc. Use ONLY crayons, markers, or colored pencils. No other embellishments and no paint please. This is a coloring contest. Coloring the entire image, including the background, is encouraged. Add as many personal touches as you would like; stuff in the sky and water, something on the island, additional people, images on the sails, etc. Do not mount the drawing onto any type of backing or matting. Turn in only the coloring page. NOTE: Image is purposefully offset on page. Please print as-is and do not try to adjust it on your computer. 11 Division 3269 : 1- Preschool (ages 3 through 5) 2- Youth (ages 6 through 8) 3- Pre-Teen (ages 9 through 12) 4- Teen (ages 13 through 18) 5- Physically or Developmentally Challenged Saturday, July 15 th, from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Get your imagination and creativity hopping with this fun and creative decorating competition. Follow the rules below as you design the funniest, cutest, most realistic, silliest, or most original bunny you can dream up. Jump right in! Print out the attached bunny pattern on white paper or cardstock. Cut it out and mount it securely to an 8 x 10 black mounting board, heavy cardstock, or cardboard (no construction paper or foam core). Bunnies mounted on colors other than black will not be judged or displayed. ONLY BLACK 8 x 10 mount boards will be accepted. Entries larger or smaller than 8 x 10 will not be judged or displayed. Decorate your bunny using paint, markers, glitter, sequins, puff paint, felt, buttons, feathers, pipe cleaners, etc. NO beans, cereal, or other food items. All items must be securely attached. Please be sure all decorations and embellishments do not stand out more than 2 from original design surface. Your bunny can be cute, serious, silly, realistic, etc. You decide! Identification must be firmly affixed to the back of each entry; Name, age, and phone number. 13 Make a Dragon New for 2017 DIVISION 3110 Youth (Ages 5 through 8) DIVISION Pre-Teen (Ages 9 through 12) DIVISION Teen (Ages 13 through 18) DIVISION Physically or Developmentally Challenged For some people, the word dragon conjures up images of fierce, fire-breathing monsters. For others, it brings to mind friendly and helpful (but usually powerful) flying creatures. Centuries of legends from around the world have depicted dragons of all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. How do you imagine dragons? Dragons may be any size up to 14 tall, long, or wide (including wingspan). Dragons may be made of wood, paper, fabric, clay, yarn, pipe cleaners, wire, beads, string, or anything else you can dream up. No food items. Required: Attach a tag with a description of your dragon: name, type of dragon, special abilities, etc. Be sure to write your name, phone #, and age on the back of the tag. Tag may be decorated if desired. Entries will be judged on appearance, originality, creativity, and adherence to rules. 1- Dragon Treasure Chests New for 2017 DIVISION Preschool (Ages 3 and 4) DIVISION Youth (Ages 5 through 8) DIVISION Pre-Teen (Ages 9 through 12) DIVISION Teen (Ages 13 through 18) DIVISION Physically or Developmentally Challenged Nearly every pirate adventure story ever written, including Treasure Island, centers around a common theme the search for hidden treasure! Chests of gold coins, precious gems, jewels, and more await the brave and daring adventurer willing to follow the clues to where X marks the spot. What a tempting adventure indeed! Begin with a purchased, recycled, or homemade container that resembles the shape of a chest. (Wood, cardboard, plastic, or any other material) Chests must be between 5 to 10 long, tall, or wide. Decorate your chest using paint, stain, glitter, hardware, etc. No food items. Most importantly, fill your chest with treasure any type of treasure. No food items. For display purposes, your chest must be propped open enough that we can see the treasure inside. 14 Treasure Maps New for 2017 DIVISION Youth (Ages 5 through 8) DIVISION Pre-Teen (Ages 9 through 12) DIVISION Teen (Ages 13 through 18) DIVISION Physically or Developmentally Challenged If you needed to hide some important treasure to keep it safe from thieves but wanted to make sure you could find it again months or years later, what type of map would you draw? Does it have written clues? Does it include a compass rose? A secret code? Famous landmarks? Does X mark the spot? So many possibilities! Start with a scrap of paper, cloth, or other flexible material any size up to 12 x 12. Distress or age your map as desired Using markers, crayons, paint, pencils, or other medium, draw or decorate your map as desired. Whether you use words or pictures (or both) be sure that your map leads to a treasure. The creativity of the visual design and the path to the treasure (words or drawings) will be considered in judging. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, appearance, and adherence to rules. 1- Treasure map Wooden Spoon Folk Art DIVISION Youth (Ages 5 through 8) DIVISION Pre-Teen (Ages 9 through 12) DIVISION Teen (Ages 13 through 18) DIVISION Physically or Developmentally Challenged Traditional folk arts and crafts evolved out of a desire to create something beautiful, useful, or fun; usually out of whatever was on hand such as bits of fabric, leftover paint, twigs, or even discarded or worn out utensils! See what you can create beginning with 1-3 simple wooden spoons. Begin with 1-3 unfinished wooden spoons, any size or shape. If using more than one spoon, be sure that they are grouped together in some way for display purposes. Create your spoon art using paint, fabric, felt, buttons, yarn, glitter, wiggle eyes, trim, or anything else you can dream up! No food items. All embellishments must be securely attached. Entries will be judged on appearance, creativity, originality, and adherence to rules stated above. 15 Wimpy Kid Journal Entries New for 2017 DIVISION 3114 Youth (Ages 5 through 8) DIVISION Pre-Teen (Ages 9 through 12) DIVISION Teen (Ages 13 through 18) DIVISION Physically or Developmentally Challenged All of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books actually look like the pages of a handwritten journal, complete with line drawings or diagrams. Create your own journal page inspired by the style of author, Jeff Kinney. Begin with ONE sheet of lined notebook paper, a page from a composition book, or lined journal page. Using only a black marker or pen, write a journal entry from one day in your life. Be sure to include some drawings to go along with your journal entry. For display purposes, glue or tape your journal page to a piece of construction paper or cardstock up to 9 x 12, any color. Entries will be judged on appearance, originality, creativity, and adherence to rules. 1- Journal page Colorful Collage Returning ic DIVISION Youth (Ages 5 through 8) DIVISION Pre-Teen (Ages 9 through 12) DIVISION Teen (Ages 13 through 18) DIVISION Physically or Developmentally Challenged Create a work of collage art inspired by the colorful and imaginative work of author/artist Eric Carle. Look through The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?, or any of his other beautiful books for inspiration. Begin with an 8 ½ x 11 piece of WHITE cardstock, sturdy paper, or poster board. (No foam core) Decide on a design. Leaving the background white (in true Eric Carle style) create your image using cut or torn pieces of paper only. Paper can be affixed with glue or decoupage medium. Let dry. If desired, you may add additional detail to your design using ONLY a Black marker, pen, or colored pencil. Sign your work on the front. Using natural materials (or artificial versions of natural materials such as silk flowers or plastic leaves) create a useful or decorative item that might be used by a castaway. No food items. Only string or twine may be used for construction. No glue. Only items found in nature (or artificial representations of these items) may be used for decorations. No paint, glitter, etc. Creations may be any size up to 18 tall, long, or wide. REQUIRED: Please attach a tag that explains what the item is or how it is used. Although the design on the flag may be made of paper, foil, felt, or other material, the flag itself must be made of fabric. They furnish their own little homes by borrowing items from the humans. Spools, yarn, postage stamps whatever they can find and carry. What a challenge it would be to create a comfortable home! Do you think you could do it? Create a piece of furniture or even an entire little room to fit the size of a borrower (about 4 tall) using only borrowed items from around your house. Rather than simply using doll furniture, try to come up with ways to use everyday items: sardine cans, spools, buttons, push pins, paper clips, etc. Your entire creation must fit on and be glued to a sturdy base no larger than 12" wide, 4 deep, and 5 tall. You may create walls if you wish, but DO NOT add a roof. The seemingly magical mix of trees, plants, and animals create the perfect environment for all sorts of adventures. Do you know what else most forests have? One of the best natural craft supplies ever pinecones! Create a critter (animal, insect, bug, mythical creature, etc.- no people please) using any amount of any size of pinecones as long as your finished project is no more than 12 long, tall, or wide. Pinecones may be left natural or painted as desired. Other embellishments such as eyes, glitter, felt, pipe cleaners, etc. may be used as long as pinecones make up the majority of the project. You can take part in our mini Flat Stanley project by coloring this small cut-out and placing him in an adventure that you have created anywhere in the world! Print out this little Flat Stanley on a piece of white paper or cardstock. He should be about 4 ½ tall. Cut him out. Color or decorate him any way you d like and then glue him onto a 9 x 12 background that you have created. Background can be created with any medium including paper collage, but it must be created by you. Your background can depict anyplace in the world, but it must be a real place, not an imaginary one. Be sure to let us know where your Flat Stanley is by writing the location in the bottom right or left hand corner of the front of your project. FAMILY PORTRAIT PAINTING DIVISION 3185 Contest: Saturday, September 2 nd at 2:00 p.m. in America s Kids, Expo Hall 5. Get the whole family involved in creating a work of art. Bring in your own canvas and we ll supply the paint, the brushes and the audience. We ll set up your painting station plein air style in America s Kids as passersby watch your family portrait come to life. Each family must supply their own blank 16 x 20 canvas panel or stretch canvas. Each member of the family must paint one other member of the family. You will have one hour from start to finish. Join the fun this year as you and your family create a dragon using only recycled items and a lot of imagination. Dragon must be completely constructed from recycled items: cans, bottles, paper rolls, newspaper, etc. Other decorative items (wiggle eyes, flowers, etc) may be added. No food. The Fair will supply a sturdy 16 x 16 base. Dragon must fit on the base and be a maximum of 24 tall. Tail of dragon may extend an additional 8 beyond base if desired. Each family must supply their own recycled items and accessories. You may design your dragon and prepaint your items at home (or leave them as-is) but the actual construction of the dragon must take place during the contest. No painting during the contest. No motors or moving parts allowed. Each family must bring their own construction supplies : hot glue guns, glue sticks, and tacky glue ONLY. 31 ILLUSTRATED RHYMES Down By the Bay DIVISION 3270 Must be postmarked by June 22nd Even if you re not familiar with the traditional children s song Down by the Bay, you can definitely appreciate the silly and imaginative rhyming schemes in the lyrics: Did you ever see a moose kissing a goose? Did you ever see a whale with a polka dot tail? What a fun introduction to rhyming poetry for younger kids! Write your own rhyme using one of these formulas: Did you ever see a ing? OR Did you ever see a with a? The last words in the two lines should rhyme while creating a very silly sentence. Rhymes should be hand written on a 9 x 12 piece of construction paper, any light color. Add an illustration to match the rhyme. Illustration may be created with pencils, crayons, markers, or paint. Please write your name, phone number, and age on the back of entry. What about stories of being shipwrecked on an island after a storm at sea? Both of these themes are full of possibilities for creative and imaginative writing. Write an original short story about a search for lost treasure or being shipwrecked on an island or both! Stories can be between 1-6 pages in length, with or without illustrations. Your collection display must fit within the hobby case dimensions: The shelves are approx. 4 inches deep by 3 feet long. You are allotted a total of 3 shelves as needed for the size of the items (maximum 15 apart). Exhibitors with smaller items will still be allotted 3 shelves if needed, but they will be spaced closer together. Hobby collections must be displayed by the exhibitor, not the parents. All decorating materials needed (tape, etc.) must be supplied by the exhibitor.
