PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Friends of NHABDA: Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. Benjamin: Yes, sir. Mr. McGuire: Are you listening? Benjamin: Yes, I am. Mr. McGuire: Plastics. Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean? The Graduate (1967) Please make reservations by 7:00 pm on Thur., Nov. 14th! Dustin Hoffman s character Benjamin may not have fully understood his parents friend Mr. McGuire, distracted as he was, caught between the seductive Mrs. Robinson and her doe-eyed daughter, Elaine. In fact, Dustin Hoffman isn t much of a dancer either! Not when chasing Nixon in All the Presidents Men, not when fisticuffing it out with a Nazi dentist in Marathon Man, not even in when donning high-heels in Tootsie. But, Dustin Hoffman would be smarter for longer if only he danced! Just one word: Neuroplasticity. More on that in a bit. continued on pg. 2

MUSIC & MEMBERSHIP Gerry Ouellette WEBMASTER Keith Johnson FOOTNOTES Joe Hannaford PRESIDENT S MESSAGE continued from page 1 October s dance at Pinkerton Academy featured NHABDA members twirling about to sounds of DJ Mister Jonathan. Kirsten Obermiller of Dance & Design Works, deftly lead the group lesson, and Kirsten and Mister Jonathan wowed us with their playful West Coast Swing. A tip of the hat to all our raffle winners! Also thanks to all of those on the decorating committee who worked so hard to make it an enjoyable time. Next month s dance will be November 16th, at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH and will feature a lesson and showcase from Paper Moon Dance Center. Remember to bring non-perishable food items for our donation to the food pantry! Neuroplasticity is the concept of brain function that has replaced the outdated theory that brain function was a singular, static, fixed process. It refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses that are due to changes in behavior and environment. Phew! Brain researchers have been intrigued with how to adjust behaviors and environments to maximize brain health. As a weightlifter might pump iron to stay fit, what can people with a brain do to keep it fit? Given that this is the NHABDA newsletter you d be wicked smart if you guessed that brain science had determined neural fitness has something to do with dance! Over twenty years of research, study, and electronic brain mapping by the Queens University in Belfast, Ireland has indicated that senior citizens stayed dramatically sharper, cognitively, for far longer, if they ballroom danced. Far more than those who just read books, or did crossword puzzles. But why dancing? Doctors proffer that the robust brain effects are multipronged not only is dancing swell exercise (which ups blood flow into your brain), stress-relieving (relaxing), and fun (improving mood), it further serves to exercise your balance muscles, increase coordination skills and improve your sense of timing/rhythm. It can also be an ideal vehicle for socializing (people with friends had healthier brains than those without), and dancing is also an outlet to channel your creative abilities. Furthermore, the doctors theorize that all of this, combined with the constant challenges and adjustments of leading and following across a crowded floor, to music, causes the brain to continually remap to provide dance solutions to the rest of the body rebuilding, revamping, revising on the fly. Training the brain to coordinate and respond to multiple stimuli simultaneously. Keeping the brain fit. If you want to stay brain-healthy, why not join us for Outreach? The Outreach group danced for twenty-eight residents, guests and staff on Sunday, October 13 at The Manor at Birch Hill Terrace in the north end of Manchester. There were nine couples (one couple were first-timers to our group) who danced a wide variety of dances as both solos or groups. Several residents got up and danced with our dancers during the afternoon. The residents had a wonderful time and gave our dancers a round of applause when they finished. They provided NHABDA with festive cupcakes and pumpkin cookies. NHABDA s next Outreach is on Sunday, November 10th at Fairview (Laurel) Place, 203 Lowell Road, Hudson, NH. Dancing is a dandy attention getter, second only to screaming. Hope to see you dancing! Agnes demille Walter J. Harney PLEASE BRING NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS TO DONATE TO A LOCAL FOOD PANTRY AT THE NOV. 16th DANCE

6 Celebrating NHABDA s 26th Anniversary Photos by Joe Hannaford A Letter From a Past-President: Wow, it s been a while since I ve sat down and written a NHABDA message! I want to say that last month s Anniversary Ball was very enjoyable. The decorations set the mood for a very romantic evening. To everyone that brought food to share thank you. Everything was delicious! The dance floor was not crowded at all and this is why I m soliciting everyone to please attend more of our dances! Most of you probably attend practice dances at your studios, but this is a great way to socialize with dancers who have different backgrounds. I think of NHABDA as extended family and it is great to see all of you at the monthly dances, held 10X a year. We must keep this 26 year old non-profit organization going as it reaches out to the amateur ballroom community with dance seminars, monthly dances, Outreach performances at local NH nursing homes, and this newsletter. Please complete the enclosed questionnaire so that the Board can use your input for shaping the future of NHABDA. They want to hear from you! How about resolving for 2014 to come to more of our dances and please bring your friends! Yours as always, Cheryl Ann Hannaford (President, )
