1 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE AMATEUR BALLROOM DANCERS ASSOCIATION Footnotes MARCH 2009 VOLUME 22, ISSUE 3 President s Message Greetings friends of NHABDA: Well, for the 145 of you who attended the dance on Saturday, February 21st, an impromptu Dancing with the Stars showcase was done by Betty Ouellette and a beginner student of hers, Mike Duquette. Betty and Mike had recently competed at the Seacoast Classic and placed 1st in the six entries that Mike had entered in. Betty, of Get-in-Step Dance Studio, was also honored with Best Small Dance Studio of New Hampshire. Thank you to Arleen Potter, Jack Blanchette, and Joe Butera for judging that night. I must say that Arleen was great as Carrie Ann Inaba, Jack as Len Goodman, and Joe as Bruno Tonioli. They played their parts perfectly even though they don t watch the show! (I gave them all a few tips about the personalities before they scored.) The evening started out with a wonderful rumba lesson by Joe Butera of Paper Moon Dance Center. Hopefully everyone who participated in it will add this to their list of favorite patterns. (My) Joe and I have decided to call it the Polish Rumba (because of all the twists & turns like the Polish Line Dance). You see, when our dance class learns new figures we usually rename them. It helps us remember the pattern. (I think Betty, our dance instructor, gets a kick out of the names we come up with.) Thanks to Rico Barr and the Jump n Jive Review for playing some great tunes. No Dance donated handmade door prizes for dances in the past. The Outreach Committee will next be performing at the Fairview (Laurel) Place in Hudson on Sunday, March 15th. This is a return visit to this facility. Our last performance at the Veterans Nursing Home in Manchester was a huge success. They have a wooden floor so the performers were happy with this. During Bob and Barbara Salvatore s waltz routine, a woman resident cried during their performance. At the end of our dances, we all go around and thank the residents for having us into their home and hope to see them in the future. Well, I thanked this one man and then he started to tell me that it brought back such good memories for him and he started to cry. (No, this is a good thing!) This makes my heart melt because our small committee is doing such a fine job. I want to thank everyone in this group and hope that we all continue to support this joy-giving that we do once a month. Our next dance is Saturday, March 21st at Pinkerton Academy, Derry. Giancarlo Costa will be teaching a tango lesson and performing at the showcase during the band s first break. Trilogy is the host band and will be playing some wonderful tunes for us to dance the night away. We have a dance seminar coming up on Saturday, April 4th at Pinkerton Academy, Derry. Norman Thibeault will be teaching two patterns Tango and Rumba. (Please see enclosed flyer and register early.) You don t want to miss this dance seminar!
