1 Windsor C-1 School District February 12, 2016 WINDSOR C-1 HIGH SCHOOL This is an outstanding accomplishment for everyone in the Windsor C-1 School Community. Thank you to each student, teacher, parent, paraprofessional, secretary, maintenance, custodial, food service, latchkey, transportation, nursing, technology, counselor, administrator, Board of Education, and community member. As many of you are aware, High School Principal, Mr. David Gilmore was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and has been at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes Jewish Hospital since December 30 th. While at Barnes, Mr. Gilmore also suffered a stroke, due to the excessive white blood cells that are created by the Leukemia. He is currently receiving chemotherapy treatments, as well as beginning physical therapy for the effects caused by the stroke. Mr. Gilmore and his family have been overwhelmed by the support shown from the Windsor Community. Freer Elementary has been nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School, based on high level criteria. They are one of 8 schools out of over 2,000 who received the nomination. In addition, this would qualify Freer Elementary as a Missouri Gold Star School. Windsor C-1 High School was recently named to the AP Honor roll, which consists of 425 school districts in the United States and Canada that simultaneously achieved increases in access to Advanced Placement courses for a broader number of students and also maintained or improved the rate at which their AP students earned scores of 3 or higher on an AP Exam. Windsor C-1 was one of only 4 Missouri schools to earn this recognition. The other 3 were Camdenton, Francis Howell, and Kirksville. 1

2 Brandon Fouts participated in the United States Under-17 National Team International Bowl vs. Ontario, Canada on February 5 th in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Brandon s USA Team won 49-7; Brandon rushed 5 times for 29 yards, scoring 1 touchdown in the victory Windsor Graduate, Haley Pouliezos, was named the NAIA Libero of the Year and was also named 1 st Team All-American for Missouri Baptist University. The Varsity Boys Basketball Team is off to their best start to a season in many years, as they are currently 15-8, with wins over Hancock, Jefferson, St. Vincent (2), John Burroughs (2), DeSoto (2), Seckman (2), Fox (2), JFK, North County and Grandview. The Windsor Golden Line placed 2 nd in the Kick and 3 rd in the Pom at Lindbergh on December 5 th. Athlete of the Week (Jan. 31, 2016) Trey Miller, Windsor Boys Basketball Hannah Hearst signs her letter of intent to play softball at Drury University. Madison Harris signs her letter of intent to play softball at Southeast Missouri State University. The 6-2 senior guard/forward is the leading scorer for the Owls, who are enjoying their best season in many years. Miller scored 39 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and dished out eight assists in leading Windsor (13-6) to victories last week over North County (66-60) and Kennedy (69-44). That extended the Owls winning streak to four games. Miller is averaging nearly 19 points and more than eight rebounds per contest (through Jan. 29) while shooting 55 percent from the field and has connected on 43 of 95 attempts from the 3-point line (45 percent). He also has 54 steals and 25 blocks so far this season. 2

Virtual Business Challenge Put Christmas at Windsor Castle on your list of things to do next year, if you haven t been to one. The music and performances are truly a professional production and the meal is outstanding, as well. High School student, Sam Roehl, has been competing the past two weeks in a Virtual Business Challenge with other students around the nation. He is currently ranked #4 in the nation out of 525 teams competing. Sam is also ranked #1 in Missouri and #1 in the Central Region. He has spent over 50 hours the past few months trying to master the Virtual Business Retailing Simulation. If he continues to hold his ranking, he would qualify for the DECA Nationals this coming spring. 3

The tournament consisted of 13 teams. This sophomore duo has led the Owls to two tournament championships so far this season, at Affton on Dec. 4-5 and at the Chaminade Tournament. They each captured first place in their weight classes (152 pounds for Warren and 182 for Yarnell) at both tournaments and are undefeated at Warren is ranked eighth in the state (Class 3) in the latest rankings by missouriwrestling.com. Medalists at the Affton Tournament were: Dirk Tucker 1 st Place Connor Richey 1 st Place Jacob Warren 1 st Place Ryan Yarnell 1 st Place Drew Kinder 2 nd Place Christian Homeier 2 nd Place Isaac Longtin 2 nd Place The varsity wrestling squad opened their season on December 3 rd, by defeating St. Louis University High School in a dual meet. The team won their 2nd tournament of the season in winning the 10 team Chaminade Tournament on Saturday, December 19 th. Jacob Warren finished 1 st at the SEMO Conference Tournament. Ryan Yarnell placed 2 nd at the SEMO Conference Tournament. 4

GILMORE ORANGE OUT GAME WHS Varsity Cheerleaders The Owl Crowd is in full force for the Lady Owls Orange Out game vs. Perryville, in honor of Mr. David Gilmore, Principal. The Windsor Owls Dance Team, as they competed at the 41 st Annual Fox Poms Show. Mr. David Gilmore s son, Hayden, tosses up the ceremonial tipoff for the Lady Owls Orange Out game vs. Perryville. The Lady Owls won the contest and are now on the 5 season.

6 WINDSOR C-1 MIDDLE SCHOOL The Windsor Middle School Select Women s Choir Performs at the 2016 Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) Conference. This conference is the largest professional development event for Music Educators in the state of Missouri. The performance took place on Friday, January 29 th, at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri. Mr. Michael Sellman, High School Choir Director, making introductions for the Women s Select Choir and Mr. Geringer. The process to be accepted as a performer at this conference begins a year in advance for auditioning groups. Countless hours are spent learning a variety of songs, choreography, and practicing with accompanists. Auditioning groups must submit a tape of performed songs to the MMEA, and each group is judged by an out-of-state panel, who then invite the top 10 choirs, regardless of age group, to perform at the MMEA Conference. This year, of the 53 choirs that auditioned, the Windsor Middle School Select Women s Choir was the only middle school choir chosen to perform. This is an outstanding accomplishment for the Windsor Middle School Select Women s Choir and for their director, Mr. Josh Geringer. Their performance was flawless and simply outstanding! Mr. Josh Geringer and the Women s Select Choir begin their performance, under his direction. Mr. Josh Geringer presented with a certificate of appreciation for their performance at the Missouri Music 6 Educators Association.

7 WMS Wrestling Team Joe Hirst, 6 th grade student, being recognized by Mr. Ron Harder of the Rock Fire Department for helping save the life of his mother. The WMS Bands performing at their Winter Concert. WMS Cheer Team Operation Sticky Situation was a success, as over 1,000 food items were collected for Brendan s backpack. Mr. Karl Shininger challenged the students to meet the goal and if they did, he would allow them to duct tape him to the wall. As you can see, the students met the challenge! WMS Dance Team The 8 th Grade Girls celebrate a big victory. The 8 th Grade Boys Basketball Team defeated Festus 45-20, earning the Conference Championship. This victory also made them back to back Conference Champions. 7

WINDSOR C-1 INTERMEDIATE CENTER Mr. Michael Holland, Intermediate Center Assistant Principal, has been named as the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals Outstanding Assistant Principal for the Jefferson County Region. Michael is the 4 th Windsor Principal to earn state wide recognition in the past two school years, joining Mrs. Denise Funston, Dr. Matt Carlton, and Mr. Charlie Bouzek in this select group. WINDSOR C-1 ELEMENTARY Windsor Elementary teacher Mrs. Carey Siegel s student, Blake Sellers, was the top reader of the St. Louis Blues Bookworm Program for the entire second grade level. He will receive four free plaza level tickets to a Blues game. 8

9 The Mrs. Linda Hardgrave and Windsor P.R.I.D.E. held their annual Trivia Night at the Middle School on Friday, January 29 th, with the theme of Star Wars. This is a very worthwhile fundraiser for the P.R.I.D.E. program and it is always an enjoyable event. State Representative Dan Shaul served as the event s Master of Ceremonies and the various teams consisted of many current and retired Windsor C-1 employees, parents, and patrons of the District. 10 JAMES E. FREER ELEMENTARY Freer Elementary has been nominated to apply for the National Blue Ribbon School Award. Freer Elementary is one of Missouri s eight nominees for the award out of the over 2,000 schools state-wide, based on high level criteria. Ms. Webb and her 2 nd Grade Songbird Choir. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has been recognizing great American schools since Every year the U.S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates high performing schools demonstrating that all students can achieve to high levels. This application process will be a yearlong endeavor. All decisions and parameters for the National Blue Ribbon program are set and approved by the United States Department of Education.
