Speaking of outdoor activities, I cannot begin to thank the many members who came to the club on March 4 for our Spring Cleanup and trim grass, pull weeds, remove old, damaged and unsightly items as well as prepare food and drink for the workers: David Johnson, Boyd Leake, Charlie and Patti Coleman, Patrick Holifield, Barry Skellie, Tom and Alice Barnett, Skip and Debbie Cox, Mike Gundlach, Terri Oehmichen, Brian and Jan Currie, Freddy, Christy and Ricky Welch, Joey Stokes, Scott and Donna Painter, Sandy Pace, Julie Noble and Shelda Jones. If I forgot someone, please know you are appreciated. What a team effort. Your dedication and time is greatly appreciated. Our club looks great. I want to make you aware of some of the projects we are working on at the club: NEWSLETTER - We have revised the format and streamlined the process in production of monthly news articles. Based on member feedback, we are not changing the monthly calendar format. We are reducing the number of newsletters printed and distributed by U.S. Mail to other GYA clubs and our members. Currently we are printing and mailing 43 hardcopies of the newsletters. Eight of these are for members. All other members receive via . If you are currently receiving a hard copy and are able to receive by , please let us know. Beginning this month, we have reduced the number to other GYA clubs to only the coastal clubs (Bay Bridge to Ocean Springs Bridge). This should have a positive impact on our costs of printing and mailing. SHIP STORE - We are in the process of opening a store whereby members can purchase or order items with LBYC burgee. Some of the items we are reviewing are caps, shirts, beverage holders, tote bags and others. We are looking at a source for car tags. Thanks to Donna Painter for graciously agreeing to help with this project. RESTROOMS - We need your help with keeping the downstairs restrooms locked. Both restrooms have been found unlocked on numerous occasions. We must keep these facilities locked to prevent possible vandalism. Please remember to lock securely and change settings after each use. 3 FLEET CAPTAIN JUNE WIGGINS Hi folks. It's that time of year when we think of sun, sailing and water. We are having two sessions of sailing camp this summer: 1 st session - June 19 th thru June 30 th. 2 nd session - July 10 th thru July 21 st. There is a sailing camp application on the website. You would go under JUNIORS, then to the 2017 SAILING CAMP. You fill this out and send it. There is a $50 deposit required prior to camp session. FEES: Member= $325 Nonmember= $375 This is a fun camp. They do many things: sailing, swimming, kayaking, games. It is a great time they will remember. A sailing story: On a breezy day in early March in the year of our Lord 2017 Long Beach Yacht Club strengthened international relations by hosting some of our European brethren. We were able to host the Goldschmidt family along with some of their German companions in the LBYC Spring 2 PHRF offshore race. It was a challenging day with winds from kt out of the Southeast. At the end of trophy presentation, it was clear that diplomatic relations were strengthened and new friends were made. In the end, we may not speak the same dialect, but the joy of sailing need not be spoken, only experienced. FRIDAY NIGHT BELL RINGER What do Kenneth Richardson, Joe Allen, Randy Herring, and Mike Moore have in common? Their names were randomly drawn on those Friday nights in March for that elusive $250 bar tab. All it would have taken is for anyone of those mentioned is to have been present when their name popped up on that random generator. You be wise and come to the Club on Friday evening, enjoy "Happy Hour", have a delicious light meal and you too could gather up that $250 bar tab. HOUSE COMMITTEE JULIE NOBLE Oh, how the March winds have blown! I think Spring is in the air! It is a great time to come out and enjoy the club. We started the month off with Dana Burke's Oyster Po-Boys. Thank you, Dana, - they were delicious. Thanks to Shelda Jones for helping serve (we know the kitchen is not your favorite) Our first Bootlegger Ball - Moonshine and Martini Tasting was held on Saturday, March 11 th and the club was transformed back to the 1920's and it was amazing! A good time was had by all who attended. I would like to give a huge Thank You to Sandy Pace for totally taking over (at the last minute) the food preparation, setting up and cleaning up for this event. We appreciate your hard work and dedication - Thursday night dinners, desserts, Friday night dinners and whenever you are needed - a true asset to the House Committee. Thank you to June Wiggins for all your help. Sandy prepared a delicious Seafood Chowder and Irish Stew & Cabbage for St. Patrick's Day. Karaoke with Ronnie Hammons followed at 8:00 and continues to be a fun time. Even if you don't want to sing, come down and enjoy those who do. It is a great way to end the work week. April is looking to be a busy month. We'll be having our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 9 th - complete with a kid s lunch, egg dying, the hunt and of course, the Easter Bunny. Bring your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. We will be having Bunco on Wednesday, April 26 th. We'll end the month with a Crawfish Boil by Bo Clarke and Richard Pace which is sure to be good. And of course, we'll have Grill-Your-Own on Thursdays and Friday night dinners as well. Be sure to check the calendar, website and newsletter for details on upcoming events. Also, look for flyers on the tables at the club and reminders and, as always, see you at your club. Drink of the month = Pirate's Tea - Tea flavored vodka, cranberry juice and a splash of club soda
4 CROQUET MARION BOWMAN The Inter Club Croquet Tournament was held Sunday March 5, 2017 at the residence of Tom and Lydia Stokes. Approximately 25 players representing six clubs as well as numerous spectators were present for this event. The following clubs were represented: Long Beach, Pass Christian, Bay/Waveland, Biloxi, Ocean Springs and Diamondhead. The winning club was Bay/Waveland, second place was Diamondhead and third place Pass Christian. LBYC was not able to retain the trophy from last year. As they say, there is always next time. And, next time will be sometime in April hosted by Pass Christian Yacht Club. Date to be decided. We are also planning to have two LBYC member tournaments this year. Dates and times to be announced. Don t forget we play every Thursday (weather permitting) at the LBYC at 4:30P.M. Come join us. We always have extra mallets available. We would like to thank Tom and Lydia for hosting the March 5 th event at their home. Inform your friends, family and neighbors that we are a club of special events, social gatherings, a relaxing and safe place to come to eat, have a drink and enjoy the company of some wonderful folks. Bring them with you to Thursday Night Grill Your Own, Friday Night Special Dinners by Sandy, or just enjoy the bar and our wonderful view from the outside deck. You are our Club's best Ambassador, our Club's best Advertising. Don t forget, any present member who is the primary sponsor of a new applicant approved for membership, will receive a $50 bar credit. Regular application fees apply. We are working on a new membership plan for May and June. Once this idea is finalized, we will all members, so please check your often. 5 BOOTLEGGER BALL Close your eyes and transport yourself back to the roaring 20 s, a time of Booze, booze and yet more booze. It s a funny thing, but when we think of Prohibition America's ill-fated attempt to ban alcohol in the 1920s and early 30s we end up picturing a drinking culture more decadent than in any other period of history. Underground parties and bootlegged spirits lent drinking an edge of danger and excitement that was infectious. Parties could be broken up at any moment by the police, while bars created elaborate ways to hide their wheelings and dealings from hidden doors to secret passwords. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel set during the period, The Great Gatsby, is drenched in alcohol. "Floating rounds of cocktails" lubricate its glitzy parties, while the titular Gatsby is even alleged to have made his fortune from bootlegging. Upon arrival at the club you entered through boxes full of moonshine, through a black and gold art deco room with tables of hors d oeuvres and into the elegance of Commodore Quigley s Speakeasy. The dimly lit room was draped in silver lamé; atop the black and white clothed tables were gold platters, sparkling vases with feather plumes, packs of cigarettes, pearls, and embossed drink menus. You ordered your drink from the bartender who poured your drink of choice into a vintage martini glass. As guests entered the speakeasy in their gangster garb, flapper dresses, and Gatsby outfits, and a bootlegger, they were greeted with the sounds of the twenties; a variety of music such as ragtime, French and Italian opera, Caribbean music, and spirituals which converged to form what is now known as jazz music. A huge thank you to The Currie s, the Gundlachs, Tristan Nations, and Rayna Brewer for the décor and another huge thank you to Sandy Pace and June Wiggins for the food. To sum it up, we had a blast and if you didn t come to the Bootlegger Ball you missed the party of a lifetime. Now back to the 20 s, only it is 2017.
