1 NEWSLETTER 3 August 2018 From the Headmaster Stephen Hazley Dear Parents and Students, This week s message in assembly was all about grit and building up the resilience to make it through the tough times that all of us go through at some time or another. We were fortunate to have Brett Archibald visit our school this week. His story describes the pain, heartache and despair he felt while he was lost as sea after falling overboard. He spent 29 hours floating and swimming not knowing how or if he would survive but through prayer he did. The big life lesson that he learnt through the experience he described as the most important thing in his life, the three F s Faith, Family, Friends. I think there are times where we can all feel the disappointed, despondent and hopeless but there is always hope and there will always be people around you that can help. This year we are changing things up regarding our Culture Day. We will hold a Culture in the Park family day on 25 August The day will have plenty of music including renowned guest string quartet, the Muses. We invite parents and students to come and have a picnic in the park or if you would like to run a food or craft stall please contact Theunis.vdm@reddamjhb.co.za. Next week we have a long weekend. 7 CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Gabriela Da Silva and Thalia Campos for winning the overall section trophy in the Flamenco Festival in the duets, trios and quartets section. Congratulations to Catherine Morrison who participated in the Junior Swimming Championships in the last few weeks. She came home with 8 gold, 4 silver and one bronze medal. Well done! Tatiana Ideia received her SA Protea Colours for Hip Hop Dance The crew competed in a South Africa Final Qualifier in March where they placed third and have become eligible to represent South Africa at the 2018 World Hip Hop Dance Competition in Phoenix, Arizona in August.

8 GRADE 10 HISTORY The Grade 10 history students did group presentations on the "Roaring Twenties". The presentations included information on various aspects of 1920s lifestyle from the prohibition to fashion and jazz. Students dressed for the occasion and we even tried our hand at the Charleston. LAMBANO SANCTUARY On Wednesday, 25 July a handful of Reddam students volunteered to help co-ordinate and set up a high tea fundraiser for Lambano Childrens Home. The team of students packed gift bags for the donors, numbered and ordered name tags and erected banners throughout the morning. Once donors began arriving, the team turned into an efficient unit, showing guests to their seats. It was a fulfilling and insightful day of hard work, that allowed the students to work together and to learn about the amazing organisation that Lambano is. Oscar Reitenberg

9 SPORTS Our second MTB race of the Spurs League took place last weekend at the Boksburg Stadium. Our riders rode with heart and focus. Our youngest female rider of the team, Tiana De Rego placed 24th in her age category. Adrian Stark came in 26th position in his age category. Our senior team riders, Ryan Scrimgeour came in a commendable 6th place, Nathan Calitz 24th place, Jonathan Ribeiro 37th, and Joel Kahl 43rd. Our senior girl, Giulia Damilano came in an astounding 4th place in her age category! This places our Reddam MTB team in 13th position overall in the Spurs League thus far, with two more races to go!
