Sierra Linda High School Dream - Believe - Strive - Achieve The Bulldog Nation Report August and September, 2014 Part 1 Shout out to the Class of 2014 Graduate One of last year's graduates, Mireille Mukiza, has had her first book published High School Combo: A Student's Survival Guide to High School. Below is the link to it on Amazon. When you open this, click on the book cover and scroll through to the dedications - you'll see a host of teacher names from Sierra Linda. Teachers Do Make a Difference. Mukiza/dp/ /ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid= &sr=1-1&keywords=high+school+combo Hon Kachina Award Our very own SLHS journalism teacher Larry Ross received the Hon Kachina Volunteer award for his work with Omega Youth Leadership Academy. It is a prestigious award and he was selected with 6 others out of 80 people from across the state. Larry was honored at a black-tie dinner on September 13, 2014 at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale in front of 400 people. Kaley O Kelley from Channel 3 was the MC and before introducing him she saluted all teachers for the unselfish work teachers do to positively affect youth. Please visit the website for more information S 67 th Ave Phoenix, AZ / FAX

Larry has had opportunity to travel yearly to facilitate and mentor some of the top males of color from across the country. Last summer he was in Philadelphia for 4 days at LaSalle University. The OYLA model is being used as a national framework. Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations! Attached are a few pictures from todays as we kicked off our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations! Hope you enjoy! Congratulations to Mr. Chinchilla and Mr. Marshall for Representing the Faculty in the Churro eating contest!!! A BIG SHOUT OUT TO M.E.CH.A members, Ms. Del Rincon, and FCCLA Members!!!! Homecoming Football Game/Tailgate Event tailgatefltwer.pub Back to School Night : This year s Back to School Night will take on a different look and feel, as we are moving all the activities into the Gym. It will look similar to the Freshman Focus Day club and team recruitment we did in the Gym. However, the Departments will have their booths set up and we have College Reps available to assist students and parents. We will also have a parent Vue Station available to those parents that have not had an opportunity to Get Connected and monitor their child s academic progress. The PBIS team is spearheading the vent and making all the plans. If it turns out like last spring s Open House, it will be a HIT!

Ms. Schmidt s AP Chemistry Class: The students put on a display of various chemistry demos much to the delight and wonderment for the attendees of SLHS Back to School Night. The students who all are enrolled in AP Chemistry were as enthusiastic to demonstrate their skills as were their audience to watch and participate in the experiments. Their excitement rubbed off on students, parents, and teachers alike! Those kids are awesome! Advisory Scavenger Hunt is a HIT!! This was a successful and fun activity for our freshman students on Freshman Focus Day. I personally had the opportunity to meet many, many, freshman. As a result of this activity, I have had many of them come up to me and strike up a conversation or ask me a question. It really broke the ice in regards to letting the kids know who I am and that I am here to assist and support them. I know the Admin. team felt the same way. Mr. Madrid Staff Photo Staff Photo Staff Photo Scavenger Hunt CheckScavenger Hunt!.pptx Scavenger Hunt_2.doc Fall Athletics Fall athletics is off to a good start. Participation is up from last year: Football program: 110 players, Volleyball: 34 players, Boys Golf: 6 players, Girls Golf: 9 players, Cross Country: 14 runners, and Cheer: 32 Cheerleaders.

The new football staff is doing well. The players are motivated and eager for the season. Varsity Scrimmage is this Thursday, Aug 21 at 7:00 pm vs. Tolleson Union High School. The Character Matters sportsmanship program is being implemented and all the fall coaches have received training on the program. Fall Sports Parent Night was held this past Tuesday, Aug. 19 and approximately 150 parents were in attendance. The athletic department is unveiling a new app to promote the Bulldog sports athletics. The app is called My Time Schools and it is free. Down load the app today and start following the Bulldogs to victory!! Student Body President Spotlight Victoria Castro is the current Student Body President at Sierra Linda High School and has been a member of Student Council since 4th grade and is excited to continue my position as president for the 4th year in high school. I'm a proud Bulldog and if there is an opportunity to be (P)rofessional, take (A)ction, (W)ork together & be (S)afe she takes advantage of it. Having such a responsible position on campus hasn't stopped her from making the best of her senior year. When Victoria is not planning upcoming school events she is Cheerleading, participating in National Honor Society, the A.C.E. Program, as well as remaining in the top 10% of her class. This year the Student Council is working towards building school spirit, helping to build attendance at school events, and participating in community service opportunities. In addition, the Student Council at Sierra Linda plays a large part in PBIS events. In February, SLHS is hosting the district-wide Middle School Leadership Conference for which the theme is Leadership is a Treasure. Currently Stugo is planning Homecoming events for our Space Jam themed Spirit Week and Dance as well as our annual Tailgate Party and other festivities. Media Center Specialist Team and Individual Smart Goals: Please see the attached sheets for group and individual smart goals. The 2 team goals are set. We have collectively created the following SMART goal(s) to address this area of focus: By the end of the school year at least 50% of each campus student population will have accessed at least one ebook. To achieve this goal. Promotion of ebook resources: Step 1: Instruction of resources during student orientation and staff meeting. Step 2: Create multiple displays in Library & ID Labs. Step 3: Create and disseminate "How to" flyers and bookmarks with QR Codes campus wide. Step 4: Post promotional announcements on kiosks, websites and marquees. Step 5: Promote with all of the above action steps. Have you caught the wave?" New Follett eshelf App- BryteWave K-12 New York Times Best Selling Author: Ellen Hopkins visited the SLHS Media Center on Friday, August 29 th. Hopkins was in town promoting her latest novel Rumble. Other books by Hopkins include: Crank, Burned, Impulse

and many others. She spoke with a small group of students and staff about her novels that are based on her life experiences. FCCLA Congratulation to Victor Meraz our FCCLA Treasurer, he was named August FCCLA Member of the Month. Victor Meraz is a tremendous asset to our club. He is very responsible, creative and innovative when developing new ideas. His enthusiasm and excitement to assist and help are what make him standout among the rest of our members. He is committed, engaged, organized, and is constantly learning new skills. Victor has been a part of the culinary program at Sierra Linda for two years and this year he decided to be more than just a member in FCCLA, he now holds the office of treasurer, we are so thankful he made this decision. He has done an excellent job developing our budget for the year. Since the begin Victor has shown a huge commitment to FCCLA. Victor has come to every meeting and event. He always volunteers to help and shows constant effort in making things run smoothly. At the beginning of the year Victor, volunteered to help in catering the Welcome Back Teachers breakfast and lunch events. Victor, along with the officer team, planned and organized an FCCLA Recruitment Week. Filled with engaging activities during school lunch to promote FCCLA on our campus. Victor s face is always seen during FCCLA events, if we have an event and need help we can count on him to work hard and offer support. We appreciate the effort and engagement Victor puts forth and hope that he continues to grow and develop his leadership skills as an officer and a member of FCCLA.

Thank you for participating and sharing all of your knowledge with our students! WE hope you will consider participating in this event (and others) in the future. 8 Read 180 In prestigious honor, Vincent Moreno, the district governing board president of Tolleson Union, visited the Read 180 classes for the entire day. He gave intense lectures for our Workshop 1: Survivors. Within his lecture, he conveyed the idea that everyone, at one point in their life, is a survivor. Finally, he touched upon the last graduating class, our very own Sierra Linda High School student, crafted a book well enough to be published. The book revolves around a student s survival guide to high school. It elaborates on being self-sufficient in order to excel within the high school curriculum. We look forward to receiving more lectures from Mr. Moreno in the future years to come. FCCLA/CTSO
