1 PIMPAMA NEWS Creative by Design! Mrs Oswald believes King s kids are the best students in the world. Why? Because every King s kid has been designed with creative purpose by the King of the universe. She knows King s kids are future world changers! On any given week in the school year, King s students are immersed in diverse learning curriculums. But for one week in term four the focus shifts away from Maths and English. Why? Because King s kids flourish when they connect with their Creator and engage in creative pursuits. The theme for Creative by Design 2016 was God s Voice. Primary chaplain, Mr Malcolm, knows that listening to God s voice is the greatest source of direction a child can have for their future. In the chapel programs students were encouraged to have open hearts to listen for God s voice and journal these thoughts during prayer time in their classrooms. In between musical theatre workshops, art attack and Indigenous culture lessons, students played ten pin bowling and danced their way through a Cheer Me Up session. There was a book fair and techno activities in the Infinity Lab. During lunchtime King s Got Talent showcased the incredible abilities of King s kids. Aleisha Flynn (Year 4) danced a Hip Hop Solo in the finals and was awarded second place. Aleisha reflected on her opportunity to perform at King s Got Talent 2016, I love to dance for Jesus and show people my love for Him. Missions Fest was a highlight of Creative by Design week for the Pimpama campus. Two buses of year six students came from Reedy Creek to help run stalls and buddy with Prep students. Parents gave their time and resources to add support to this incredible initiative. The combined efforts of a playground buzzing with generous hearts produced $1684 for King s missions. Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart 2016 raised $3477 from our two primary campuses,

4 Prep Visit the RSPCA Emu Van At the end of Term 3, the Preps visited Reedy Creek campus to learn about the care of animals and responsible pet ownership from the RSPCA EMU (Education Mobile Unit) van. Students had the opportunity to be vets, rescue a cat, discover what it would feel like to be a caged chicken and play interactive games to learn what the RSPCA does to help animals. Pimpama Stars Excel at Cheer Competitions Congratulations to the Pimpama Stars who achieved outstanding results at two recent competitions. The team finished 5th at the State Cheer Competition and 3rd at the National Cheer Competition. Well done Stars! The next Stars performance is at the Pimpama Movie Night. Disabled Parking - Permit Required Please consider the needs of our growing campus when parking your car. Disabled car parking spaces are required on a daily basis and are reserved for parents/carers with a permit. Thank you for reserving these spaces for those who benefit most from their intended purpose. The blisters, sore muscles and weary feet didn t dampen William s enthusiasm to make a difference in the world. William chose to raise funds for Care Australia s work with underprivileged children in Africa. Over the school holidays, William achieved his goal by walking from Byron Bay to The Spit and raised nearly $6000 for charity. The Gold Coast news featured the determination of this young man to chase such a big dream. What an amazing achievement, William! A Family Drag Racing Tradition Continues Nixon Cannuli (Year 2) successfully obtained his IHRA junior dragster licence. Nixon s 5hp single-cylinder powered junior dragster reaches speeds up to 70km/hr over a 200 meter distance. Nixon and his sister Tiana are 3rd generation drag racers. Their father is the ANDRA 2015/16 Australian champion and Top Alcohol quickest man in the world. Nixon s mother was the first woman in Australia to compete in the Pro Stock category. Nixon is following in the footsteps of his grandfather who was also an Australian champion in the Pro Stock category. Congratulations, Nixon! Figure Marching At the end of last term, Joel Skerman (Year 4) competed with his local Boys Brigade group at the Boys Brigade State Figure Marching Competition. The group prepared a four minute sequence and placed 2nd. Well done, Joel! Dancing Success Over the holidays, Marleigh Cox (Year 1) competed at the Kids Artistic Revue and achieved some great results: Runner Up Rising Star Miss Petite Title Under8, Top First Place in Hip Hop solo and Jazz duo, First place in Jazz solo and Lyrical solo, Highest scoring overall duo in the under 8 Rising Star age group. Fabulous dancing, Marleigh! Mia Jackson (Year 2) also competed at the Kids Artistic Revue and was awarded the Rising Star Miss Petite winner. Mia achieved another dream when she was successful at her audition for Brisbane City Youth Ballet s summer production of the Magic Faraway Tree. The performance will open in January 2017.

What does that mean anyway, and what can we expect in any given discipline situation?

6 Parenting with Power How Do You Define a Change of Heart? Scripture of the week: (1 Samuel 16:7) Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. At the National Center for Biblical Parenting we talk a lot about helping children change their hearts. You may be thinking, My children don t know how to change their hearts. What does that mean anyway, and what can we expect in any given discipline situation? When a child has done the wrong thing, it s often helpful to require some alone time with instructions like, You need to take a break. Come back and we ll talk about this after you change your heart. Children may not understand how it happens but with practice they can learn to change their hearts. A change of heart in children involves four steps: 1. Stop fighting, calm down, and be willing to talk about the problem 2. Acknowledge having done something wrong 3. Be willing to change 4. Commit to doing right These are all steps that a child can do. Ideally we would also like to see two other steps take place: 5. Feel sorrow for doing wrong 6. Have a desire to do what s right. Now, that may sound like a lot, but children grow into this process slowly and we can help them through the steps. If your son has been disrespectful in the way he spoke to you, first he needs to stop and settle down and be willing to work on the problem. Then secondly, he needs to acknowledge that he was wrong. Thirdly, he needs to be willing to respond differently next time. And lastly, he needs to commit to trying to do better. Sometimes children may only settle down (Step #1) in the break. Then they are ready to process the other steps with the parent. Other times, children may be able to work through all four steps and then just report back do the parent. The only prerequisite for coming back from a break is that a child be willing to work on changing the heart. Your child may be ready to change without knowing what the right thing is to do next time. Remember, we re looking for heart level changes. Onces your child has had a change of heart, then you can help your child learn what was wrong and what he or she can do differently next time. Remember, Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Teaching children to change their hearts is a valuable lesson that they will benefit from for the rest of their lives. To learn more about the heart, consider the book, Parenting is Heart Work, by Dr Scoot Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN. Strategy for the week: Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, say this about teaching your children to obey: God expects children to learn obedience at home, because hidden within that virtue are the principles that will make them successful as they get older. Teaching children to cooperate with you will also help them learn how to obey God and be responsible as they get older. Our son and daughter-in-law have this rule on their fridge: What is your first rule in our family? To listen to Mum and Dad and do what they say. This is a great rule to put into practice in your family. Children can always be taken back to it with discussions about how Mum and Dad know best. God has given you them to train and develop. Try it out. It works when implemented in love and with consistency. It also teaches children to respect those caring for them.
