4 BEHIND THE MIKE Gary Petersen A.C.F. Public Relations Hello Everyone, by the time you read this article most clubs will be starting to wind down for the Christmas break. This is a time when we get to recharge our batteries, spend time with family and friends as well as enjoy the festive period. Some areas have long breaks and others have shorter breaks. This depends on the structure of each club as well as venue availability through the silly season. For callers and club leaders it is a time where they can reflect on the year and how and what they may plan for the following year. Are your hall bookings secure, is the advertising in place for classes? With the digital age some callers will spend the time making adjustments to their music. I know I do! I try and have all of my music at the same levels so I can just call and not have to play with the dials while dancers are waiting. During the year when I use songs I get very annoyed when the music sounds bad. I take note of that song and put it on my to be fixed list. Generally I have a folder named Redo s and I copy the music file to it. Sometimes during the year I get a chance to fix some of these but if not they are there ready for me to attack during the break. Have you ever wondered how callers relax! We are all different, I know myself that since calling four days a week I am very tired {mentally} by the end of the week, let alone at the end of a year. I am also obsessed with music, unfortunately this generally leads to more work in the editing room, but I do enjoy a few drinks while doing it. I find also that laughter is the best medicine and If I can find a comedy to watch for an hour or so it relaxes my brain and the few drinks can t hurt! Merry Christmas, And have a Safe and Prosperous New Year! Page 2 Review November 2012

5 Australian Clogging Association Inc. Report Still the talk of clogging all over is the very well organised and totally enjoyable 17th Australian National Clogging Convention held in Adelaide. Congratulations to our dear South Aussie friends. The Showcase winner at the Convention was South Australia with the dance Play That Country Music choreographed by Irmgard Huddy. The ACA Executive Committee for the next 12 months is: President Jenny Neal, Vice-President Nina Annand, Secretary Cathy Beitzel and Treasurer Denise Jenkins. If you are wishing to receive a copy to the ACA Newsletter, Erica Mann has taken over the job from Julie-Anne Clark. Contact details for Erica are in your ACA Newsletter. Louise Frodyma; Tas. Jan Collins. My sincere thanks to the ACA for inducting me into the Australian Clogging Hall of Fame which I consider to be a great honour. The Get Rhythm Dance Team have been putting clogging out there at a number of events, the premier one being part of a fabulous late afternoon/evening Concert organised by the Australasian Gymnastics and Dance Academy at Kippa-ring on Brisbane s north.the energy and talent of the Academy s members and others taking part was a joy to behold. Performances were put on at several other places, with clear enjoyment for both the Team and our smiling audiences. Thanks to the Team s members for putting so much time, effort and dedication into practice sessions and the performances themselves, plus the professionally produced costumes, all done by the Team s sewing circle. As this is the final ACA Report for 2012, may I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Review s National Editor Rosalind Todd, State Editor Bev Liley, my P.A. Don for his continuing advice and assistance, and the support and kind words from Cloggers everywhere- THANK YOU, and may you all have a joyous, safe Festive Season. 6 Tassie News Society dance Kindred. The Annual Memorial Dance in September was attended by dancers from around the State. A minutes silence was held in memory of those we have lost. There are so many at the moment who are having trouble with hips, or knees or ankles that a call is out to the callers of Australia to invent a dance for a 3 legged person so we can tie two bad legs together to get everyone onto the floor, even if it means one person in that 3 legged person has to face backwards. It was great to see Mary & Michael Laing s daughter Rebecca dancing. She only started with the learners at the Convention. Congratulations to those brave folk who faced the mic as Amateur Callers, joining regulars Graeme, Glenn, John & Di to keep everyone warm on a wet chilly night. Thanks to Di for the Rounds. Robyn won the three hour cruise which the Convention Committee donated to the Tas. dancers who attended the 53rd. Well deserved. Next Society Dance is the Christmas Dance at Perth on Saturday 1st. December. Launceston: Glenn MacLaren & Di Ashton. Best wishes to Pete & Barb who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. They are off on a caravan trip around the State. Norma & Graeme back from a hectic China trip with lots of stories. Best wishes to Katie & Frank on their overseas trip. Dietmar seems to manage a quick sex change whenever the call is for ladies promenade. Lesson well learned by the Mathews family with veer left or right taking over road rules to turn left or right. Thanks to those dancers who gave up a big part of their Saturday of the Launceston Show to put on four, 15 minute demos, & to those who handed out the cards about the Club. 12th. December will be final Club dance for year, followed by our Christmas dinner on the 14th. Shirley. TASMANIAN SQUARE DANCE SOCIETY INC. 7 Round Dance Tips for Waltz Here is a very worthwhile article written by Tim Eum The Waltz is among the oldest of the dance rhythms. It began among the peasants of Europe at least as early as the 1500s. The waltz was the first dance to use the closed position for any extended period of time, and that, coupled with its wild turning and other actions, kept it from the gentry for a long time. But by the early 1800s, the dance had taken hold in Vienna and composers such as Mozart and Josef and Johann Strauss made the Waltzen even more popular. It was just too much fun to remain widely condemned. It spread throughout Europe and was brought to English ballrooms around By 1825, the Waltz became known as the Queen of the Ballroom. In America, the Waltz was first exhibited in Boston in Later the tempo was slowed and the dance evolved with more elaborate figures fitting the slower tempo. The waltz is done to music that has three beats in each measure. It is the Oom pah pah or 1, 2, 3 rhythm. It characteristically is danced with rise and fall where generally you lower on step one, begin to rise on step two, rise to full height by the middle of step three and begin lowering by the end of step three. The waltz is a smooth, flowing, graceful, and travelling dance, and thus the couple will move quite a ways around the dance floor. The waltz is the only rhythm in Round Dancing that has defined figures in all six phases. A Few Figures -- BALANCE LEFT & RIGHT Don t pop up and down. A common error is to rise too quickly and lower too quickly instead of doing so smoothly in a flowing manner. FORWARD WALTZ Step diagonally side on step 2. Don t simply go forward three steps. Take a long low forward step, then start to rise while stepping diagonally on two, and finally close on step three. THRU CHASSE Syncopate the 2nd and 3rd steps. Begin in semi-closed position (SCP) and end in either banjo (BJO) or SCP; the cuer should tell you which. In either case, the first step is with the trail foot (man s right and lady s left) coming through in SCP and taking weight. Then you do the chasse (side/close, side). According to Roundalab the timing for Waltz is 1,2&,3. However, you can make this figure more elegant by rushing the side close and for a moment hover before taking the last step. The timing thus becomes 1,a2, 3 in Waltz. This hovering action adds a nice feel to what would otherwise be a routine sideways movement. It also helps to emphasize the rise and fall within the figure especially for Waltz. Continued next page Review November 2012 Page 5

9 Square Dancing in China Fifty-four dancers from around Australia recently travelled to China, forty-eight of them to perform in the 2012 China Luoyang Culture Tourism Festival, the other six being extremely useful supporters. We landed in Beijing for a few days sightseeing. The second evening we were taken by bus to one of the local squaredance clubs. We were aware that they had booked a larger hall due to our large group visiting, but were totally taken aback by the huge reception we received upon entering the hall. The warmth of their greetings and friendship overwhelmed us. The evening was wonderful and the local dancers, mostly female playing either the left or right-hand position, were very competent dancers. Both George Pitt and George Kent were invited to call and Ed Coleman introduced rounddancing which proved so popular he has been asked to provide them with some instructional tapes to help them learn the new pastime. Following Beijing we enjoyed three days cruising on the Yangzte River which was most enjoyable. We even did some square-dancing one evening. We then reached Luoyang and looked forward to the main reason we were all there in China - the Festival!! The rehearsal went well and the next morning we travelled back to the venue for the Opening Ceremony. We paraded on to the floor and formed our sets without a hitch, but imagine our horror when the Chinese announcer loudly spoke over the beginning of Brian Hotchkies taped call. We wished the floor would open up as we could not hear the call and fell into a heap!! Happily the announcement ended and we were able to pick up the call and continue faultlessly throughout the number. The opening ceremony was followed by a bus trip to another part of the city where we had a three km parade performing every two or 300 metres. By the end of the parade, after doing the same number Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport on each of the seven performing areas, we felt we knew it off by heart!! The following day we were driven about two hours out of the city to perform at a public performance at the President s palace. There were many performers from all over the world and no changing rooms, so our group had men in one bus and ladies in the other, in stifling heat, struggling with stockings, petticoats etc but happily we all managed to get the right leg in the right hole and looked pretty good in our new outfits. 11 N.S.W. President s Report To continue my Alaska Holiday as briefly as I can, on our flight back to Anchorage from Brooks Falls, we were very lucky to see Mount McKinley clearly displayed for us. This is a rare occurrence as it usually has some cloud cover on it somewhere. Next came my birthday. Many thanks to all those who sent me birthday wishes on my 70 plaque. Yes, Lynn managed to take it with her without my knowledge and present it to me on my day. My first surprise was a lovely T-shirt from Lynn with polar bears on it with diamantes depicting claws etc, absolutely gorgeous. Next surprise was a close encounter with the polar bears at the zoo, from my daughter and her family. This was magical, did you know that polar bears actually have black skin under the white hair which is actually hollow. They allowed us to feel some hair and it would crimp in our fingers. Very interesting. My next surprise was a Skegway tour from my son and his family, This was so exciting and we drove around town for around 2 hours having the time of our lives then we went down a big hill to see salmon swimming up the river, went to the ULU factory (fancy knife) and had a free ice cream. We now had to go back up the hill and unfortunately one of the front riders stopped right at the crest and Lynn and I had nowhere to go. I thought I had fallen on my bottom but apparently my right elbow hit the ground first. A visit to the local hospital proved it broken so they put it in a half plaster and asked us to come back next Tuesday to see an orthopedic surgeon. We asked if we could do our kayaking tour but they said no. We were very impressed with the efficiency of the hospital staff. My last surprise for my birthday was dinner at the Seven Glaciers Restaurant which was high up a mountain with a magnificent view. Lynn had to do some wangling to change our booking to a later time and because we had continued with our holiday, the staff treated us like royalty. The Chef told us he was honoured that we had still come to his restaurant and sent out little samples of exotic dishes for us to taste. At the end after we had had a Review November 2012 Page 9

13 N.S.W. President s Report Cont. delightful salmon dinner he came out again and asked us could we please stay another two minutes as he has cooked something special for us and it would only take another two minutes, and even if we only had a mouthful each he would be happy. Of course we agreed. A wonderful rhubarb soufflé with strawberry bouclé arrived and we soon polished it off completely. It wasn t until a couple of days later that I realized that I had been to this posh restaurant in a hospital gown top with just a vest over the top. If I had realized it at the time. I would have been quite embarrassed. What a wonderful birthday! Thanks Lynn you really make it special. After this we drove ourselves to Seward where we had organized a cruise where we saw whales, seals and lots of bird life. One that specially took my fancy was the puffin. When it goes underwater it flaps its wings and moves very fast through the water then when it tries to take off into the air it is usually so full from overeating that it kind of bounces along the water before it can gain any height. Gorgeous! Well I have just now returned from China, I will write a separate report on this, but have returned with a nasty cold. Hopefully by the time this is out, I will have completely recovered. On behalf of the Square Dance Society of NSW Inc, I would like to wish each and every one of you a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. See you at one of the dances. Roslyn Square Dancing in China Cont. That left us with another week and a bit of pure sightseeing. Overall the tour was good, though very tiring. Our tour leaders, Celia & Chris Karas, did a fantastic job despite many difficulties with hotels not having rooms ready, wrong rooms being allocated, people getting lost etc. There was also a very strong language barrier with not much English spoken, even by staff at hotels, which made Celia & Chris job even harder. We all became quite proficient at saying ni hou (pronounced knee how and meaning hullo, how are you) and xie xie (x being pronounced sh and meaning thank you). All felt it was a wonderful experience and would not have missed it for anything. Pam Pitt Review November 2012 Page 11

21 Square Dance Trip To China Well fifty-four of us took off to represent Australia in the Luoyang Tourism Festival. What a huge task to organize! We thought they were a bit slack not answering our s quickly but after seeing the preparation involved, I am surprised they had time for anything. There were over forty groups displaying their country dances with just two and a half minutes for each group. We had a rehearsal one evening after a wake up call at 5am then a five hour fast train journey but all went quite well and we knew where we had to go and what we had to do. Next day, after a 6am sleep in, we dressed in our outfits, jumped on the coach and went to the Stadium to perform. We were sixth on the program but still felt like we were at a convention lining up for the dressed set parade. Eventually we had the stage but there was so much noise interference that we had no hope of hearing Brian s calls and unfortunately, as far as we were concerned, made a complete hash of it all. We then loaded into the coach again and moved to a street location where we redeemed ourselves by performing perfectly while spectators lined the streets either side and packed at each intersection, seven in all, we danced to a half version of Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport on carpet laid down especially for the performers. Thanks Brian for making it easy for us. By the time the coaches collected us after the last intersection we were well and truly prepared to call it a day. However, this was not to be as they wanted us to visit the Luoyang Longmen Grottoes and the Guelin Temple. Lots of step, as usual. Next morning, after a 5.45am wake up. We again boarded the coaches and drove three hours down the express- way to the Shaolin Temple where we walked up and down about a million stairs and looked into hundreds of rooms, ate lunch then changed in the coaches for our two and a half minute performance (done very well again), had some photos taken, then back to the coach, change, and three hours return journey before dinner and retire for the night. Prior to all this performing, we had danced with the square dancers in Beijing who made us feel extremely welcome. Two clubs combined to welcome us and some other performers did a dance with scarves which looked a lot like ribbon dancing. They presented each of us with a lucky necklace. Good dancing and calling by the two Georges and another caller from Taiwan. A great trip but a little too much in too short a time. Roslyn Burrett Review November 2012 Page 19

27 QCA 32nd Convention - Hervey Bay Hervey Bay is still suffering from the 'Post-Convention-Blues', we were all so excited, so busy, so happy, that we had to pinch ourselves to make sure this was real, and it was happening in Hervey Bay. It will take some time before we re able to slide back into a normal life, without deadlines to meet and with time to ourselves. The great feeling of succeeding against the odds and definitely scrubbing-up-well, will stay with us forever. It is with great pride in our club, its members, friends, family and the local community that we say; We DID IT! The preparations from over 12 months eventuated into an absolutely brilliant event. The relaxed atmosphere, the laughter, the friendships reforged, the fun on the floor, the huge number of wonderful callers, the Great Hall dressed up to the nines and the presence of so many dancers from near and far, all combined to make the 32nd QCA Convention such a success. Thanks to all for allowing Hervey Bay to have-a-go! If anyone has any great photos that they are happy to share, please them, if anyone would like a copy of the camera movies from the opening ceremony etc.; we might be able to pass a stick around. It will be rather calm after the storm, but look us up on Congratulation s Grace 90 years YOUNG Well dancers, EZ Squares Caboolture recently enjoyed helping Grace celebrate her 90th Birthday. I personally can only hope to be still square dancing when I am her age. Grace came to square dancing later in life learning only the left hand dancer, and it has proved that dancing helps to keep you young in both mind and body. We wish Grace well and hope that she can continue with her dancing. Kaye Clouston Publicity Officer EZ Squares Caboolture Review November 2012 Page 25

31 Western Australia Delegate s Report Well it certainly was spring in WA. Not a lot of time to devote to preparing this report as we have been very busy with preparation and presenting our 34th State Convention. And what a great weekend we all had! With 215 people coming through the door it certainly was one of the highest recorded attendances in recent years. The addition of a guest caller from Queensland, Gary Petersen, was an added bonus and one that we all certainly enjoyed. Thanks Gary for your contribution. The programming was a little non-conventional but it turned out to be one that was seemingly accepted by all. It certainly provided continuous dancing and a fun filled dance programme. Many verbal congratulations have been received but reprinted below is a written one already sent to the committee. Just a little note to record my congratulations on such a lovely Convention - all your hard work certainly paid off and I am sure the event will go down as one of the most successful conventions. The whole package came together so well - the venue, the decorations, the programme of dancing and all the administration and side issues that had to be addressed along the way - all this the result of an excellent team choice. I am sure that you all woke up this morning experiencing a sense of relief but happy in the knowledge that those who attended really enjoyed themselves. Well done. For all the callers reading this we used a USB powered hub as much as possible and eliminated much of the plugging and unplugging of laptops on stage. It certainly helped keep to time and the whole programme on track. In fact the only time we had sound issues were when we had an external device come on stage and needed to be plugged in. Also a piece of equipment failure with the auxiliary jack input on the MA 150 falling apart. Note to all: check the minibolt on the outside of the input jack and make sure it s tight. Seems after many plugging in and out operations it may work loose and fall apart at the most unwanted moment. We now have a few more converts on board who see the benefits. Just a few minor issues to resolve such as music volume on the USB, file naming do we do title or label? The less untested equipment coming on stage was certainly beneficial. Maybe the future is one record player, and one computer with powered USB hub using auxiliary 1 and 2 on the MA 150 would be the way to go. Until next time Greg Fawell Review November 2012 Page 29
