1 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW A PUBLICATION OF THE MYOTONIC GOAT REGISTRY WINTERIZING YOUR GOATS ~D. P. Sponenberg FALL 2015 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4 Goats need a few basics in winter that are different than other seasons of the year. Depending on where you live, winter can pose interesting challenges. Temperature is one issue. Goats can survive cold temperatures, but need to be dry. It is best if the housing is draft-free. Draft is just a breeze in the wrong place, and you need to think like a goat to get this one right! You might be comfortable, but that can mean nothing if the draft is at goat level. A few strategies can work well. The challenge is to keep good ventilation without draftiness. One solution we have for adults and goat families (a doe and her offspring) is to use calf hutches. We have used the brand called polydomes for years, and they basically never wear out. Our oldest polydomes are over twenty years old and still work well. These have the advantage of separating goats (cutting down on violence) and are small enough that a few goats can keep them quite toasty and comfortable. We ve noticed that the few bad actor goats hog one, while the more communityminded all pile into other ones. You can also easily rig up a wire panel for a front gate if you need to confine a goat. Kids are another issue, and if you have young kids in cold weather they can indeed freeze to death. Or, they can get frostbitten ears or feet. In either case, the outcome is not ideal. One solution that can work is to take a plastic 55 gallon drum. One end will be solid, one has the holes in it for getting out whatever was in it to begin with. I cut the solid end off, leaving enough height for a water trough. The other end I split in half, which makes a sort of quonset hut that is big enough for several kids. They learn to pile in at a few days of age, and these are confined and protective enough that the kids usually stay quite toasty and comfortable. If the quonset huts are too long there is a risk of too many getting in and the back ones suffocating, but I ve never had that problem. These repurposed drums will be too big to use in polydomes, but work well in three-sided sheds or barns. The kids also play king of the hill on these, so they serve multiple purposes. Water is another key winter issue. My bucks basically never drink water! BUT if it is not available, one of them will get urinary stones and block. So, good water needs to be available, preferably at all times. Stock tank de-icers are one way to assure this. The importance of water cannot be overstated, and cold temperatures can make this a real challenge. Feed is also important. Goats need energy, and this can come from concentrated feeds like grains. This is especially important for does in late gestation, to avoid pregnancy toxemia. Energy demands are higher in winter, and meeting those demands is essential. Roughage in the form of good hay is also important, as this helps the rumen to work and actually produces some of the heat they need to be comfortable. By making sure that shelter, food, and water are available you can keep your goats happy all winter. This year s National Show Doe panel consisted of Ms. Debbie Mullins, Miss Ashley Hadley and Mrs. Kristy Shearer. The National Show Market Wether panel was Ms. Debbie Mullins, Miss Ashley Hadley and Mrs. Kristy Shearer. The National Show Platinum Wether panel was Ms. Debbie Mullins, Mrs. Kristy Shearer and Mrs. Janice Likens. The National Show Buck panel was Miss Ashley Hadley, Mrs. Kristy Shearer and Mr. Jimmy Dowell. The 2015 Myotonic Goat Registry National Show was held on September 26th in Corydon, Indiana at the Harrison County Fairgrounds. The event kicked off with an MGR Judges Training Course on September 24 th in conjunction with two MGR Sanctioned Shows dubbed The Fall Face Off Shows on September 25 th & 26 th. The Fall Face Off Shows were hosted by Ben and Lynnsey Dauer of Indiana. There was no shortage of beautiful examples of the breed. The overall correctness and quality of the Myotonics on hand is to be commended. The National Show is always exciting and brings exhibitors from across the U.S. This year we had exhibitors from Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas. There were a total of twenty-two Champions who participated at the National Show. Just getting to Nationals is a tough road but to win at Nationals is even tougher. Nationals are judged by a panel of at least three judges. Each judge picks their first, second and third place goats and records them on a scorecard. The first place choice is worth five points, third place is worth three points and third place is worth one point. The combined scores are It is no easy task to have the honor of participating at the MGR National Show. You simply don t get to enter; you have to be eligible to participate. All Does and Bucks must have earned their Permanent Grand Champion Status, Platinum Wethers must have at least three points and Market Wethers must have at least one Champion point. In order for a Doe or Buck to earn their Permanent Grand Champion status they must earn three points. Of the three points two must be earned as the Grand Champion and one may be earned as a Reserve Grand Champion. There must be a minimum number of goats participating (Does 20, Bucks 10 and Wethers 6) in the show and have enough senior division (Does 8 and Bucks 5)and at least six exhibitors in each division. Only one point may be earned in the junior division for Does and Bucks, and the last point may not be earned until the goat is two years old and has live registered offspring. Platinum Wethers may earn a total of twelve points but must have at least six Wethers and six exhibitors to record a point. This is the first year MGR has offered Market Wethers who must have at least three exhibitors & three Market Wethers to earn this point (Market Wethers must show no evidence of permanent teeth). The Report of Awards must also be filled out correctly and the identification on the Report of Awards must match the MGR database to record the point. This year s participants in the MGR National Doe Show were: Goat Hill farm Derby Girl bred and owned by Kathy Jacobs, Pint Size Ambrosia bred and owned by Janice Likens, Pint Size Meiko bred and owned by Janice Likens, Buck Creek Hanna bred and owned by Ben and Lynnsey Dauer, Titan Farms Bella bred by Meagan Lloyd owned by Jack and Prissy Chilcutt and Buck Creek Harley bred and owned by Ben and Lynnsey Dauer. 4 PAGE 4 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW The Ranch is FOR SALE! Onion Creek Ranch TM WILL CONTINUE breeding superior meat goat genetics and holding GoatCamp TM annually but we are ready for another move. The current ranch property is for sale. On 271 acres in McCulloch County near Lohn north of Brady, Texas sits a breeder s paradise. This fully developed ranch is divided into over 30 traps and pastures, the largest of which is 24 acres. All pastures connect to the working pens via lanes for easy working of the livestock. Each pasture has a metal loafing shed numbered by pasture. Each pen and pasture is watered by Miraco automatic-fill water troughs fed from the Hickory Aquifer well located in the center of the ranch. The Hickory well is 2800 feet deep and rated for 100 GPM. There are three other wells on the ranch. A 40KW diesel generator automatically provides electricity when there is a power failure and cuts off when power returns. FOR MORE INFORMATION AND PHOTOS visit the Realtor s site. The first link is photos, the second is a link to the listing. GOAT TIPS: COLD WEATHER FREEZING WATER ~Jan Likens I fill up one gallon milk jugs with warm water and transport them on a red radio flyer wagon to the barn each morning and evening when the weather is cold. Wagons can be purchased at yard sales and will hold ten jugs, depending on the size wagon. The goats love the warm water. So do the chickens!

Mar-Bob useless was named the 2015 National Champion Platinum Wether. Goat Hill Farm Hot Shot was named the 2015 National Champion Buck. Over the last several years Myotonic breeders have been encouraged to focus on correct breed type, good structure and balance. This has been no easy task as many breeders had selected size as primary focus over the last few years. Asking breeders to look at the entire package of the breed rather than just one aspect caused some upset and yet others did the work and it showed as fine examples of the breed were on display at both the sanctioned shows and the National Show. For any Registry a National Show is very exciting. There is no exception to this rule when it comes to MGR. I am often asked if I find anything as exciting as a National Show when I look at the breed. My answer may be a little surprising because participation at our National Show takes years of work to achieve. I however, find the Junior classes of goats participating at our shows just as exciting. When I look at the breed the Junior classes of goats show where the breed is headed and I see the positive impact that having MGR Certified Judges is having on the breed as a whole. The last five years has been focused on helping the breed become more recognizable and uniform throughout the country. There are many wonderful examples of the breed across the country with less outside influence than seen in the past. I could not be prouder of the dedication the MGR breeders have shown in preserving Myotonic goats. The MGR office is winding down 2015 and working hard to update Breeder accounts along with the processing of Registrations and Transfers. Please remember to check your listing on the Breeder's Directory to see if any changes are needed. If you find your information needs updated please the office at: MyotonicGoatRegistry.net May each of you have a blessed holiday and Happy New Year! ~Tara THE HEALTHY GOAT: PEANUT BUTTER BANANA SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS: 1 1/4 cup goat milk 2 tablespoons peanut butter powder 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon wheat germ 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon organic cold-milled golden flax 1 banana, sliced 2-3 ice cubes (or crushed ice) Chocolate syrup if desired DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients in Bullet or Ninja blender. Using the pulsed setting, combine for a few cycles. If you are using a regular blender, you may want to break up the ice cubes or use crushed ice for better results. The amount of ice used governs how thick the smoothie is so start with a small amount and add more if needed. csb

7 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4 PAGE 7 MAKE YOUR OWN GOAT TREATS ~Denise Wogatzke Homemade Goat Cracker Recipe Here's a cracker recipe that my goats LOVE. Sometimes if I don't feel like rolling out the dough I just make bite sized balls and bake them 10 to 15 minutes. Then I let them sit out to air dry so that they become really crunchy. Ingredients: 1 ¼ cups flour or whole wheat flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil; more as needed 4 tablespoons water; add more as needed 1 teaspoon seasonings such as dried peppermint etc what ever you think your goat will like. Preheat oven to 400 F. Mix together well, preferably in a food processor, 1 cup of the flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt and oil ( use smaller amount for crisper crackers, or a larger amount for a richer flavor). Add 3 tablespoons water and mix well. Gradually add more water, mixing after each addition, until mixture forms a compact ball. If it seems too sticky to handle, add more flour. Sprinkle a work surface (or a baking sheet-sized piece of parchment paper) with some of the remaining flour then press and roll the dough to about 1/8th inch thick. Try to get it fairly uniform. If the dough is too dry to roll out, return it to the food processor and add a little more water. If necessary to prevent sticking, dust your hands and the rolling pin with a little more flour. Put the rolled-out dough on a baking sheet dusted with a little flour (if you've used parchment paper, transfer dough and paper to baking sheet) and bake minutes, until somewhat brown. Cool and break into pieces. If making several batches, mix another while the first one bakes. You can re-use the parchment paper several times. THE GOAT GOURMET: WEST TEXAS CABRITO LOAF 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped celery 1/4 cup chopped onion or dry onion flakes 1/4 cup shredded carrots 1 chopped jalapeno (optional) 1 egg 1 cup croutons, stale bread crumbs or stuffing mix 1 Tablespoon each salt, black pepper and garlic powder 2 pounds ground cabrito 1/4 cup catsup 1/4 cup barbecue sauce Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix first 7 ingredients together and let stand 5 minutes. Add in 2 lbs. ground cabrito and mix well. Form into a loaf and place in a loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. Remove from oven. Mix the catsup and the barbecue sauce and spread over the top of the loaf. Bake another 5 minutes and remove from oven. Serves approximately 4 people. Recipe is from:

17 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4 Myotonic Goat Registry 3174 Valley Ford Road Adger, AL Phone: myotonicgoatregistry@yahoo.com Website: PAGE 17 The Myotonic Goat Registry was formed in 2005 as a sole ownership registry by Gene McNutt with input from an initial Board of Advisors made up of Dr. Phil Sponenberg and Barbara Roberts. The current Board of Advisors includes Dr. Phil Sponenberg, Cindy Bene, Jason Duffy, Jan Likens and Dian Naumann. The owner and Board of Advisors will make decisions concerning the registry and its procedures. This method of governance is meant to provide Myotonic Goat breeders with a registry that will not have frequent changes, and will have the longevity and consistency needed to successfully promote the Myotonic Goat breed, while at the same time make it responsive to the needs and wishes of the breeders. In 2009, Gene retired and the registry was sold to Tara Lawrence. As the Myotonic Goat Registry grows, additional Board of Advisor members may be added in order to more broadly represent the breeders. The owner, along with the Board of Advisors, will be responsible for providing for its own replacements and/or expansions. The Myotonic Goat Registry takes into consideration all breeders, from pet owners to commercial meat growers. Regardless of which aspect of this breed appeals to you, the Myotonic Goat Registry is the place for all breeders to register their Myotonic Goats. The Registry will help breeders promote their goats through sales, shows, and advertising, and will educate the public about the Myotonic Goat and its usefulness in a variety of settings.
