1 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW A PUBLICATION OF THE MYOTONIC GOAT REGISTRY MGR YOUTH AWARD: JASMINE PITTMAN The goal of the Myotonic Goat Registry (MGR) is to preserve the breed. There is no greater hope for the future of any endeavor than for the passion to be passed on to the youth of today. Several years ago, a youth program was formed by the MGR. The hope was to not only inspire and educate the youth of today but to recognize them for outstanding work. There are year-end prizes for MGR youth who hold the highest points in each division and a $ scholarship to be awarded to one graduating youth each year. The 2014 year is the first year we had youth who qualified for the scholarship. I am proud to announce that Jasmine Pittman of Tennessee is the first MGR Youth to earn the scholarship. Jasmine was honored at International Goat Days in Millington, TN this past September. She is the daughter of Ellen and Rick Pittman, and the granddaughter of Lisa Edinger. Jasmine is an inspiration for all of the MGR youth. I am proud of the hard work and dedication she has shown during high school and look forward to working with her in the future. I hope that everyone in the goat community enjoys her essay that appears on page 7 as much as I did. ~Tara Congratulations to Jasmine Pittman FALL 2014 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: From The Farm The Gourmet Goat MGR Scholarship Recipient Millington, TN Show Weedsport, NY Shows Pine City, MN Show New Plymouth, ID Show Biglerville, PA Show INSIDE THIS ISSUE: From The Farm 2 Goat Milk Yogurt Quick Bread MGR Scholarship Award Jasmine Pittman Babe Howard and robin Cotten Memorial Show Empire State Myotonic Show, NY Hidden Springs Show, MN 12 MGR Youth Committee Pictured from left to right: Kim Trisler, Ellen Pittman, scholarship recipient Jasmine Pittman, Tara Lawrence and Diana Long North West Classic Show, ID 14 South Mountain Show, PA 16 Annual Renewal Form 18

2 PAGE 2 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW FROM THE FARM... It seems like 2014 has just flown by! The MGR office has been very busy all year long and your continued support of the breed is appreciated! It has certainly been a year of changing faces as several breeders who have been involved for many years have retired. Judy Balmer of KY who is a member of the MGR Board of Advisors will be retiring from her position on January 1, The Board of Advisors (BOA) is responsible for choosing their replacements and Jason Duffy of NY has been selected to fill the BOA position. I look forward to working with Jason in the future. The 2014 MGR Judges Training was held in Millington, TN this year. I am proud to share that our newest judges are: Bob Beasley of IN, Ben Dauer of IN, Jamie French of NY, Ashley Hadley of KY and Larry Lambert of TX. It is exciting to see our list of MGR Judges growing as the breed will greatly benefit from their knowledge. International Goat Days held in Millington, TN hosted two Myotonic Goat Registry (MGR) sanctioned shows along with the National Show. The Friday night show was named after Babe Howard who started International Goat Day, and the Saturday show was named after Robin Cotten who hosted the MGR shows for several years and was a member of MGR. There was no shortage of beautiful examples of the breed on hand. The overall correctness and quality of the Myotonics on hand is to be commended. The National Show is always an exciting and brings exhibitors from across the US. This year we had exhibitors from Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Louisianan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. There were a total of twenty-four Permanent Grand Champions who participated at the National Show. It is no easy task to have the honor of participating at the MGR National Show. You simply don t get to enter; you have to be eligible to participate. All Does and Bucks must have earned their Permanent Grand Champion Status and Wethers must have at least three points. In order for a Doe or Buck to earn their Permanent Grand Champion status they must earn three points. Of the three points two must be earned as the Grand Champion and one may be earned as a Reserve Grand Champion. There must be a minimum number of goats participating (Does 20, Bucks 10, and Wethers 6) in the show and have enough senior division (Does 8 and Bucks 5) and at least six exhibitors in each division. Only one point may be earned in the junior division for Does and Bucks and the last point may not be earned until the goat is two years old and has live registered offspring. Wethers may earn a total of twelve points but there must be at least six Wethers and six exhibitors to record a point. The Report of Awards must also be filled out correctly and the identification on the Report of Awards must match the MGR database to record the point. Just getting to Nationals is a tough road but to win at nationals is even tougher. Nationals are judged by a panel of at least three judges. Each judge picks their first, second and third place goats and records them on a scorecard. The first place choice is worth five points, third place is worth three points and third place is worth one point. The combined scores are used to determine an overall winner at the National Show. This year s National Show Doe panel consisted of Mr. Wade Buntin, Miss Ashley Hadley and Mr. Larry Lambert. The National Show Wether panel was Mr. Ben Dauer, Mrs. Debbie Mullins and Mr. Joseph Turney. The National Show Buck panel was Miss Ashley Hadley, Mr. Larry Lambert and Mr. Joseph Turney. This year s participants in the MGR National Doe Show were: Pint Size Ambrosia, Pint Size Calypso, Pint Size Meiko bred & owned by Janice Likens. Rocking E Creek Red Hot bred by Melissa and Tim Ervin, owned by Joseph & Cassandra Turney, Brassring Sequin bred and owned by Lisa Edinger, Titan Farm Carley bred by Meagan Lloyd, owned by Ben and Lynnsey Dauer, Moonlight Farms Persia bred by James and Cindy Bene, owned by Prissy Chilcutt, S-L Brown Sugar bred by Sonny Purser, owned by Jim Rosenbaum and Woody Creek Farm Hot Party Time bred and owned by Debbie Mullins. Wolf River Malachi was named 2014 National Champion Buck. Over the last year Myotonic breeders have been encouraged to focus on correct breed type, good structure and balance. This has been no easy task as many breeders had selected size as primary focus over the last few years. Asking breeders to look at the entire package of the breed rather than just one aspect caused some upset and yet others did the work and it showed as fine examples of the breed were on display at both the sanctioned shows and the National Show. May you have a blessed kidding season and a Happy New Year! Remember to check the website often as there will be youth activities over the winter months along with 2015 events to start planning to attend. ~Tara National Show Champions From left: Judge Larry Lambert, Cody Baumeister with Champion Buck Wolf River Malachi, Judge Joseph Turney, Zona Johnson with Champion Wether Wells Little Man Friday, Judge Ashley Hadley, Debbie Mullins with Champion Doe Woody Creek Farm Hot Party Time, Judge Wayne Buntin and MGR Owner Tara Lawrence. 7 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 PAGE 7 MGR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT JASMINE PITTMAN Raising my Myotonic goat has impacted my life in several ways. The number one way is has impacted my life is responsibility. It honestly feels good to have something to take care of, something to take responsibility of. Another big major part of raising my Myotonic goat is being involved in the shows and making friends. Robbie is my goat, my first goat. He has impacted my life very much. I raised him since he was a baby and he has become my best friend along the years. I honestly couldn t ask for a better starter goat. Raising him has taught me a lot. The learning experience has no option but to grow and grow. I started off by knowing what to feed a goat, how to brush them, and then to knowing the body parts and knowing about the birth of a goat and what medicines to use if they are sick. Raising my Myotonic goat has impacted me in many ways that I appreciate. I ve always been a part of 4-H since the age of 7. I enjoyed the learning of everything you wanted to learn about. I also had done a showmanship demonstration for the kids to show them what was the right versus wrong in the show ring. I ve always been involved in community service activities and clubs such as FCCLA and Interact Club. My leadership experiences to aid others is a big concern in my life. I absolutely love helping people. Helping the youth is my favorite thing to do. Helping raise money and educating the youth, as well as helping with the pee-wee showmanship. That was my favorite part, just helping them with how to know the name of their goat and how to know how old they were. Some advice I d give for beginning MGR youth breeders would be to pay close attention to the little stuff. The little stuff counts just as much as the big stuff. For example, if you don t know how to feed a goat, you simply won t have a goat. Also, competition can be fun. Not competition as in fighting over boyfriends but competing to get that first place ribbon and to feel the greatness in your hear and to know you won something because you tried your best and succeeded. Now that s the best feeling in the world to earn something you worked for. Which brings me back to my most memorable experience with Myotonic goats: Family. Going to the shows and seeing everyone, now that s amazing. Having that feeling that you re family and that you have no worries on your shoulders. My showmanship classes were also memorable, competing with my best friend Max for several years growing up. He was more experienced, more educated, and more proper when it came to the Myotonic goat but after several years competing and being close to beating him every time, I finally received that blue ribbon I had been waiting for. Success was a great feeling considering I worked for it for a long time. In the end, raising my Myotonic goat has taught me so much in life: responsibility, hard work, caring for other people and family that isn t blood. Raising my Myotonic goat was a good impact on my life. ~Jasmine

19 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 Myotonic Goat Registry 3174 Valley Ford Road Adger, AL Phone: myotonicgoatregistry@yahoo.com Website: PAGE 19 The Myotonic Goat Registry was formed in 2005 as a sole ownership registry by Gene McNutt with input from an initial Board of Advisors made up of Dr. Phil Sponenberg and Barbara Roberts. The current Board of Advisors also includes Cindy Bene, Judy Balmer, Jan Likens and Dian Naumann. The owner and Board of Advisors will make decisions concerning the registry and its procedures. This method of governance is meant to provide Myotonic Goat breeders with a registry that will not have frequent changes, and will have the longevity and consistency needed to successfully promote the Myotonic Goat breed, while at the same time make it responsive to the needs and wishes of the breeders. In 2009, Gene retired and the registry was sold to Tara Lawrence. As the Myotonic Goat Registry grows, additional Board of Advisor members may be added in order to more broadly represent the breeders. The owner, along with the Board of Advisors, will be responsible for providing for its own replacements and/or expansions. The Myotonic Goat Registry takes into consideration all breeders, from pet owners to commercial meat growers. Regardless of which aspect of this breed appeals to you, the Myotonic Goat Registry is the place for all breeders to register their Myotonic Goats. The Registry will help breeders promote their goats through sales, shows, and advertising, and will educate the public about the Myotonic Goat and its usefulness in a variety of settings.
