1 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW A PUBLICATION OF THE MYOTONIC GOAT REGISTRY WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT GOAT S MILK? ~Submitted by Cindy Bene According to an article Dietetics and Hygiene in the Journal of American Medical Association, Goat milk is the purest, most healthful and most complete food known. Goat milk is tolerated well by all ages because it is easily digested and assimilated, and is rich in minerals and trace elements. Compared to cow s milk which digests in 2-3 hours, goat milk digests in 20 minutes. A study of goat milk was done by Dr. Carl Wilson of Palo Alto, California. His observations included: Fat globules in goat milk are one fifth the size of those in cow s milk The reaction to goat milk is alkaline (same as human milk) whereas cow milk produces an acidic reaction Goat milk is about one third richer than cow milk The curd of goat milk is small and light, making it easily digestible. The curd of cow milk is large and dense. Goat milk is 2% curd as compared to cow milk which is 10% curd (the curd precipitates in the stomach) These factors help to explain why people that have allergic reactions to cow milk tolerate goat milk much better. 2 PAGE 2 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW FROM THE FARM... It seemed like the hot dry summer would never end but at last fall is here. I am really enjoying the cooler temperatures and catching up on foot trimming. Time has flown by this year at the office. It seems like we are growing every day. As of writing this we have 647 active breeders and have registered a total of 17,066 since MGR opened its doors. It s exciting to see so many new folks taking an interest in our breed. MGR will be part of the East Texas Meat Goat Extravaganza at the Rusk Co Youth Exposition Center in Henderson, TX. This will be a three day event. We will be hosting our first judge s training on November 9, Instruction will be given by Al Paul with seminar by Dr. Frank Craddock and Preston Farris. A huge thanks to these gentlemen for the time and effort they have spent helping me put this event together. I m excited to say we have received judge s school applicants from coast to coast! Our final shows of the season will be held on November 10 th & 11 th with Nationals being held on the afternoon of the 10 th. The overall quality of goats that compete in Nationals is outstanding and well worth the drive to watch! For those of you who would like to attend but not show there is still plenty to do! The National Kiko Registry will be hosting an All-Breed Regional Pen Sale which is open to breeders from MGR. For additional info please see the MGR show page and follow the link. The Piney Woods Meat Goat Conference will be open to all and will offer hands-on demonstrations of hoof trimming, injections, ear-tags, tattooing, microchipping as well as FAMACHA certification training. Expert speakers will be Dr. Frank Pinkerton The Goat Man, Dr. Dave Sparks, DVM and Ken McMillin, Ph.D. Last but not least will be the ETGRA s 3 rd Annual Spectacular Goat Showdown. The event combines instructive open jackpot show for all ages, with all breeds and offers hands on help to those who want to show. The Goats, Music and More Festival held last weekend was a great deal of fun even if Mother Nature decided to share some rain! It takes months to put together events of this size and the dedication of some wonderful folks! A huge thanks goes to Debbie Mullins for her work and coordination of the event between the City of Lewisburg and MGR, Lisa Edinger for a spectacular Goat Rodeo (which raised a $ for the youth program) Ellen Pittman for help with the youth raffle table and a million other things, Zona & Jon Johnson for a beautiful photo display area and help keeping class placing and Wally Kornegay for working the gate and saving me when my car decided not to start! As goat folks we often procrastinate and I have come to believe that it is just the nature of goat folks to do so! However, I would like to remind everyone that criteria for our bucks registration will be changing on Dec. 31, So, get those buck registrations in the mail! We will not allow buck registrations postmarked on Dec. 31 or via e- mail. They must be registered by Dec. 31, 2012 and it is highly recommended they be received at least two weeks in advance to guarantee they make it in. Please keep in mind that MGR will be closed on December 24 & 25 so plan ahead. I hope each of you have a wonderful fall kid crop and a Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for the wonderful job you have done in 2012 and I look forward to working with you in ~Tara Notice of Change Looking to the future of the breed is very important not only for its preservation but also for the acceptance of the Myotonic as a breed. One of the ongoing problems in that acceptance is that as a landrace breed it has many different looks, and therefore cannot be given a breed standard that will cover the breed. This is the reason MGR has in the past only used a Breed Description. How do we get this to be an accepted breed by the industry and also be able to have a breed standard that will indeed allow for a true conformation? Not a simple or quick task to do. However, we will begin on 01/01/2013 to initiate our first step by closing the registry to allow only bucks that have two (2) registered MGR parents. How does this help? We must accept that our Bucks are one half of our herd. Therefore, if no new bucks are allowed into the MGR registry then we will begin to see a particular look begin to shape within this registry. This will not happen overnight but is a start to progressively moving the Myotonics into a breed that can be recognized instantly by breeders. Remember: as of 01/01/2013 Bucks without TWO registered MGR parents will not be allowed to be registered---no exceptions. 4 PAGE 4 MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW YOUTH BREEDER BREANNA PEANUT BAUMEISTER Meet Breanna (Peanut) Baumeister. She is the daughter of Cody Baumeister, son of Rick and Nancy Geeslin. She has lived with her Papa Rick and Cece and Dad Cody for the last 2 1/2 years and has become a huge help to her Papa and Cece. With her Dad working long hours in the oil field, she has known nothing but goats and older folks. Goats have been her best friends while living with us, along with our Border Collie Jesse. She has her own herd name, Peanut Brittle Acres, and will share that with her Dad (he has the does) and continue to show her myotonic goats in showmanship and the wether classes. Her wether is Wolf River Mikey, and she also has a buck from Dian Naumann, Shade Tree Acres Special Peanuts. Of course she has her pick of a baby each year, which is her favorite time, so maybe this spring she will get her own doeling. For her the choice is hard...she loves all the little babies. Peanut has her chores that have to be done after school. She waters, cleans out the feed tubs and gets them ready for Papa. She is just the right size to climb the fence and turn things over! Climbing seems to be the fun part. She is great at herding the group of does in at night, with her own stick that works at guiding the does this way and that. She and her Dad have recently moved to their own home, but she is here everyday before and after school. She started Kindergarten this year, so that has been exciting for her, but her favorite thing to do is be at the goat farm. We are hopeful she is the future of the breed and continues to have the interest in showing and making friends at the shows. Special friends so far are Emma Dysart, Grace Lawrence, Alex Dauer, and Destinee Rogers. Pictured above: Peanut and Mikey the day he was given to her as a birthday present. Mikey is named after her other grandpa who is in Heaven. Pictured at left: Peanut and Grace Lawrence in the showmanship class at the Shreveport, LA show held on June 9, 2012 Although there aren t many wethers being shown in our area, Peanut has done very well with Mikey, getting Grand Champion Wether in Greenville, TX this spring in Show A, and Reserve Champion Wether inshow B. She is looking forward to all the future shows and willl most likely have something pink on! Pictured at right: Peanut and Mikey at the Lone Star State Fainting Goat Show held May 12, 2012 Mikey was Grand Champion Wether in Show A and Reserve Grand Champion Wether in Show B

5 VOLUME 7, ISSUE 4 PAGE 5 MGR BREEDERS RICK & NANCY GEESLIN A little over ten years ago I saw the documentary of Coyote Creek and their goats and fell in love with the breed. I had just given up showing my cutting horse because of a broken back and we decided this was the animal for us something two older folks could work and handle by ourselves. We bought five does from a man in Haslet, Texas and pretty much just had fun with them for five years. But it got to the point where we needed an outlet for all the babies we had kept and after doing some research, we decided to register them with MGR. This took awhile as Gene and Tara can attest to. Having to go back all those generations and bring them all up to date took some time. We do have a commercial side because of our location. The ethnic population in our area love the breed for all the muscling. I know some of ya ll would never dream of selling them for meat but that is why God put them on this earth. We have just in the last year and a half started showing, and we just love it. Bothe Rick and I have competed with either cattle or horses all our lives, so showing the goats has come naturally. The people we have met have been great, but then they love the myotonics as well. We live on 41 acres in North Texas just 30 miles south of the Red River, so we are fairly centrally located for the shows that have started to pop up. We try to make four or five shows a year. We have 65 breeding aged does, 8 breeding bucks and about 40 younger does and bucks as well. We kid once a year starting in February on through April or May. We also have my gelding that has a forever home along with four dogs and one cat. We have been blessed to have purchased Hillside Acres Dinger from the Raby s at two months of age, and he has 2 points towards his championship. We just recently finished Jamcin s Sassparilla PGCH in Millington TN. Most people already know Sassy but for those who don t, he was bred by Cindy Huggins and bought and shown by the Bakken s. So we will be going to our first Nationals. We are really excited about that! We are looking forward to having the chance to see old friends and make new ones as well. Pictured above: Rick Geeslin with Hillside Acres Dinger at the Seneca, IL show held July 30, 2011 where he got his first point for Grand Champion Buck in the Heartland Show. The goats have become a family affair with both our boys showing some of the big bucks and our granddaughter showing in the showmanship class. We have made some life long friends and mentors with Dian Naumann and Eve Williams, also fellow Texans with their own champions as well. Tom and Maggie Raby, and Leroy and Linda Bakken are also in that group of friends. We hope to continue improving the breed but keeping within the standard for many years, Lord willing! The current Board of Advisors also includes Cindy Bene, Judy Balmer, Jan Likens and Dian Naumann. The owner and Board of Advisors will make decisions concerning the registry and its procedures. This method of governance is meant to provide Myotonic Goat breeders with a registry that will not have frequent changes, and will have the longevity and consistency needed to successfully promote the Myotonic Goat breed, while at the same time make it responsive to the needs and wishes of the breeders. In 2009, Gene retired and the registry was sold to Tara Lawrence. As the Myotonic Goat Registry grows, additional Board of Advisor members may be added in order to more broadly represent the breeders. The owner, along with the Board of Advisors, will be responsible for providing for its own replacements and/or expansions. The Myotonic Goat Registry takes into consideration all breeders, from pet owners to commercial meat growers. Regardless of which aspect of this breed appeals to you, the Myotonic Goat Registry is the place for all breeders to register their Myotonic Goats. The Registry will help breeders promote their goats through sales, shows, and advertising, and will educate the public about the Myotonic Goat and its usefulness in a variety of settings.
