Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles -- and some would say, the world's largest family. Dedicated to our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non-religious and nonpolitical organization. Founded in 1977, GWRRA has grown to more than 80,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 foreign countries in just 32 years. Over 800 active Chapters are managed by 4,000 volunteer leaders working with members to foster safe, enjoyable riding while also working to improve the public image of motorcycling.

Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors And So It Goes As I sit here thinking about the year that is in completion, I am amazed at the things that have been planned and accomplished. Bob and I are completing our second year as your Chapter Director. It has been an honor and pleasure to spend our time with each and every one of you. We have developed many friendships that mean a lot to us and we have space and time for many more. The year always starts with the Valentine Run in Azusa. The selection of 2016 Chapter of the Year was exciting. We as a chapter worked hard for this honor and it felt good. On to March and Rally in the Valley was quite an experience. Many of our chapter attended and it was great. April brought our own event which is always work and fun at the same time. This was the way of the year. Each month brought another rally and opportunity to be with our friends. If I mentioned each by name this paragraph would be a book. They are each great. August and September were really busy months for us. We attended the Colorado District before WingDing in Texas. We met many new friends in the selection process for International Couple of the Year and are still in contact with them. This experience put us in the center of the GWRRA organization. What a blast!!! November and December became months involved with family. Our daughter delivered our 15 th grandchild early with some minor complications. We have been in Texas off and on for most of two months which included Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and the graduation from high school of our grandson. Thanks to the great team of officers we have, we were able to handle family issues without any concerns that chapter business would be handled. As 2018 becomes a reality, we are starting the year with lots of anticipation of what is to happen this year. Life is one great adventure and we are happy to be in the midst of it. Planning our events, rides and activities is something we look forward to. I am working on the new event signup sheet so we can get it approved. Our theme is Country Fair. We need to get started with planning soon. Perhaps our Ride Coordinator will have some great rides to exotic places. We need to plan rides to Midway Utah for the Zermatt Rally in May. Some are even looking to WingDing for a longer ride. Keep an open mind about the new year and changes that may be occurring within GWRRA. We will find our way and remain a great chapter. Robert Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors Ride Safe it s more Fun!

Ken & Jan Pedder Assistant Chapter Director We certainly hope that you and your families enjoyed your holidays. I know I have overindulged in the meals that go along with them (as if I needed more reason to eat). Jan and I had a blast hosting the annual CA1-A Christmas Party and it is our wish that all of you had fun. We also got a kick out of anointing the new Couple of the Year, Bill and Lois. They are deserving of this honor, given their participation in all things GWRRA this year. They have been active in both Chapter and District events. Bill has been supporting our Chapter with maintenance tips and Lois has spent quite a bit of time creating bags to hold the Chapter audio equipment and our Chapter mascot. We consider them to be worthy successors. Our after-meeting ride in December brought us to the Ridgecrest area where we enjoyed a great brunch / lunch at Bernardino s in Inyokern. The food was great and plentiful. We then rode out to the wild horse and burro holding facility operated by the Bureau of Land Management. Bill and Juanita were kind enough to bring what appeared to be fifty pounds of carrots for us to feed the horses with. I didn t see any burros and my guess is that they were on the other side of the facility. I left feeling sorry for these creatures that were clearly out of their element, but I guess it is necessary. Between the ride and checking out the animals it was a rewarding day. The weather was wonderful considering the time of year. Jan and I are looking forward to the ride to Bakersfield at the end of January for the California District Officers Conference. In February we will ride to Covina for Chapter CA1-I s annual Valentine Ride. We will probably stay overnight in Highland and attend Chapter M s monthly gathering the next morning as we have for the last three years. This a good time of the year to consider what maintenance might need to be performed on the machinery in preparation for the start of the riding season. I know I am always behind with my maintenance, but I hope you all are keeping on top of it. I manage to keep up with the safety related stuff, but minor things get neglected. Perhaps one day I ll be able to retire and will have more time for such things. See you out on the road...ride often but ride safe! Ken & Jan Pedder Assistant Chapter Director

Sandy Carbo Membership Enhancement Coordinator Christmas is almost here. Another year is almost gone. It has been a fun year and I was able to go to Texas. I really enjoyed going and I am sure that those of you that were able to attend had a great time. GWRRA has again taught me and showed me so much. I believe the people in CA1A really help create enthusiasm in me and are encouraging me to learn about this wonderful organization. We had our Christmas dinner, and party at the home of Jan and Ken Pedder. It was GREAT. Their home was decorated and Jan really outdid herself with everything, decorating outside as well as inside. We ladies did a great job with the various food that were brought. The various gifts that were brought for the gift exchange were a lot of fun and caused a lot of laughter. I know December has been a busy month for all of us. I think we can all relax with a nice cup of hot chocolate and maybe cookies after December 25 th. I hope you all are taking the time to read the Gold book that we members get sent to us. I know Bob enjoys checking things out when the new book comes; however, Bob really reads the new Wing World every month. He has learned so much and lets me know what is going on. I guess I am mentioning this to hopefully encourage everyone to take some time to read. Did you know that he has found pictures of some of you that attend various places that all of us do not get the opportunity to attend. I encourage all of you to read the magazine. I would like to end this month with a Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays to all, be safe and Hope to see you in Sandy Carbo Membership Enhancement Coordinator

Nancy & Bob Clark CA District Directors By the time you read this we probably will be in the new year of 2018 a year of changes and opportunities. Bob & I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family close around you. We will begin our adventure this year at Officer s Conference where we will come together and learn about how our focus will be on fun and riding. Hope you will be joining us. We will not be submitting an article monthly to the chapter newsletters after this month. Quarterly you will be receiving a District Newsletter along with all GWRRA members, but please feel free to contact us anytime with questions, concerns, or just wanting to visit. We love to hear from you. With that being said, Bob & I wish you a wonderful new year of fun and adventure as we travel these roads together. Look forward to seeing you out and about. Bear Hugs from your CA District Directors Nancy & Bob Clark California District Directors [gwrra.mamabear@gmail.com]

Russ Thome Ride Coordinator Hi All! Hard to believe another year has gone by! Last month s ride took us to Ridgecrest and we were thankful to have Bill and Juanita set up lunch and activities for us. Awesome weather for the 2nd of December to say the least! Starting out with about 16 of us, we headed for Bernadino's in Inyokern for a nice lunch, a great buffet and fair prices! From there, Bill and Juanita led us to the BLM wild horse and donkey rescue. Bill had purchased 2 huge bags of carrots from their local market that are specifically for the rescue animals and he brought them out for us to feed them. Most of them were pretty wary of us but we found a few that were happy to see us and took the treats from our hands. Often times I miss having horses but not the upkeep!! Afterwards, the 6 of us remaining headed to the fairgrounds for the arts and crafts show. Pretty good size, lots of vendors and shoppers still there even though we got there with less than an hour to close. Sue and Lucy of course managed to find something they could not live without! Lucy and I were the last ones to head out and Bill had mentioned going back through Garlock, but it was getting late and the sun was setting so we decided to save it for another day as we would not be able to see much. I didn't realize how much open area there is around Ridgecrest for off roading, definitely will be going back to play and explore! Thanks again to Juanita and Bill for great time!! Happy New Year! 9 GWRRA s Gold Angels Precision Riding with a Flair! Tigger Swing? Infinity? Roger s Mix? Diamond Burst? Any ideas as to what these are? Well up to a couple of years ago, neither did I. Then while attending the 2015 California District Convention in Bakersfield, I was asked to operate a camcorder and record the performance of some group of Goldwing riders that called themselves the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. OK I said, but what is a precision motorcycle drill team? Merriam-Webster defines a Drill Team as an exhibition marching team that engages in precision drill. If you substitute motorcycle for marching, you get the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. A team consisting of several motorcycle riders and performers demonstrating incredible precision maneuvers on Honda s luxury touring bike, the Goldwing. Think of it like what the Thunderbirds do in the air, the Gold Angels do in a parking lot. So how did it start you ask? In 1999, a group of Goldwing riders from Southern California decided to watch the Arizona drill team perform at a motorcycle rally. They were so impressed that they convinced the Arizona team to show them a few drills and maneuvers. Being instantly hooked, the California riders decided to form their own motorcycle drill team. Thus, the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team was born some 18 years ago. Some of the founding (Charter) members are still actively participating today. That first year the team grew to 10 riders and they held practices twice a week to hone their newly discovered skills. During the 1999 California District Rally in Bakersfield some of the AZ drill team showed up and joined in on the performance. That was similar to pouring gasoline on a fire. They were seriously hooked and wanted more! In 2004, the Gold Angels were personally invited to participate in the International Drill Team competition held in Nashville, TN. The team performance was so impressive, they received a standing ovation for two new and innovative formations. That always looks good on the resume! The Gold Angels are a Not-for-Profit organization and never charge for a performance. Since its inception the team has focused on fundraising events such as the San Diego Toy for Tots, Elko Motorcycle Jamboree and Camp Pendleton s Motorcycle Safety Days. Many of the GWRRA chapters request the Gold Angels to perform at their individual rallies. The team also performs at many district, region and national events along with some local community events. Each team member is a volunteer and responsible for the costs associated with his or her motorcycle. These costs also include all travel expenses incurred during a performance and all practices. These riders do it because they truly enjoy it. So, what lies ahead for the Gold Angels? In February, they will be performing at CA-1I s Valentine s Ride. March finds them at CA-1R s Rally in the Valley. Contact the Gold Angels today about performing at your chapter event!

For more information on the team visit them at or find them on Facebook. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making a donation, feel free to talk to a team member or them at: contact@goldangels.com Stay tuned! In the upcoming month s I will be introducing each of the team members. Ride safe and Ride often, Michael R. Douglas

MEMBERS & THEIR BIKES This month s article is written by Bill & Juanita Willis This newsletter article will be about my (Bill Willis) riding adventures, miss-adventures, and some screw-ups. First let me remind all of you to ride safe and keep a lookout for everything and anything, you never know what will happen or when it will happen. Once when I was riding my Yamaha RD-350, I was on a back road in the farmlands of Hanford Calif. Enjoying the view and watching the Caterpillar disking the field. He got to the end of the row as I was approaching. The Cat did not stop and pulled out in front of me doing a U turn to plow in the other direction. I was left with a view of a Disk covering the whole road ahead of me with no road left. Needless to say I was on the brakes for all they were worth and took the shoulder. I'm sure I would have looked as chewed up as that field had I not got stopped. Another time I was riding in downtown Hanford and a car stopped suddenly in front of me. I was a little to close and was forced to lay the Yamaha down in-order to avoid a collision. I was following to close, and enjoying the ride not paying attention to my surroundings and others around me. I also did a stupid thing on a routine basis while living in the Central Valley, I rode in any weather, rain, wind, FOG, FOG, Fog. You all know how the valley can get fog so thick you cannot see your own front wheel, and how almost every winter there is several news worthy accidents involving accidents caused by the fog. I was young and stupid, I rode every day in regardless of the weather. Not taking weather hazards into account is not conducive to safe riding. Rain (wet roads), Snow, Ice, Wind, Fog, and even the sun if you do not take in enough fluids can be a very serious hazard to riding. As I aged I had learned a lot about riding safe and had fewer incidents and maybe some of it was the annual motorcycle safety courses the Navy made all riders take. I wish they would have added Motorcycle Awareness classes for all drivers. However, age was not all good I became less able to hold up the my Cavalcade Touring Bike. I would lay her over at 0 MPH when I would set my foot down when coming to a stop if any sand were on the road. The sand acted like marbles. I also laid her over in the parking lot of Home Depot and at Work, even my own driveway, Sand in Ridgecrest is everywhere. I bought a TowPac trike kit for her and put it on to help the falling over. That part worked, however, the Cavalcade did not have the front fork rake kit and was terrible to handle in curves. If any of you buy a trike make sure it has the appropriate rake. I came down with Cancer and went thru Radiation and Chemo treatments and also had a Radical Surgery with a long recovery time and also Physical Therapy I survived but the Cavalcade did not, Her carburetors fowled and I was not physically able to do the repairs necessary. I sold her and My wife said I could not ride again due to my physical health problems. Well it took me a couple years but I convinced her to let me get a Trike. That's how I came to be the owner of the 1500 Gold Wing Trike I now ride. I ride with the Gold Wing Road Riders, American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard. I love riding and enjoy the company of others who also ride.

Remember Ride Safe, with your head on a swivel, Make sure others see you, and be alert your ever-changing environment. Do wear your safety equipment, it is so important to your safety, A biker without his/her safety equipment would be like a football player without pads or helmet, just wrong, and probably going to the hospital soon. Bill and Juanita Willis Three things that cannot be recovered: Time, Words, Opportunity

Mike Ridgway Hello Gold Wing riders. My name is Mike from Chapter Q, and I am here to help if I can. During our trip to Wing Ding in Montana two of our Wings broke down. It cost one rider approx. $ the other about $ to get home. This really bothers me to no end! I went out and purchase a Motorcycle / Trike tow unit for my pickup truck. Now I am retired, so I have all the time in the world! I would like to offer to any Winger that breaks down and after using all of their AAA towing benefit s and any other tow services and they still are not home, CALL me and I will go get them FREE, just pay for my gasoline and buy me a hamburger. THANX Mike.
