4 FROM THE DESK OF THE CDs D o c & K at h y B oy d Welcome to We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May the New Year be great for everyone. We hope to bring more fun and more rides to the chapter in But we need help from you, the chapter members. We want to have a planning meeting in January. Your input is needed on time so we can have as many people in the planning meeting as possible. I was looking at the weekend of Saturday Jan 20 th or Sunday 21 st. The district officers conference is on Saturday 27 th. So I would like to take our ride planning information and information from the officers conference and put all the information together to put rides together. We would also like to consider doing some inter-chapter rides. I would like to salute our Chapter CA1L members What a wild 2017 year of riding with family and friends. From dinner rides, campouts, after meeting rides, Chapter rallies, over-niters, and day rides, to a very successful CA1L Pirate rally. We ve had members volunteering to create rides, come up with our dinner ride locations, plan rides, lead rides, and photography. And we would like to especially thank the Crawfords for hosting the CA -1L Christmas party for the 18th year in a row. CA1L has had a showing at over 90 % of the California rallies. Without all of our members volunteering to help out, this wonderful chapter would be just an ordinary chapter. 5 District Director Review Nancy & Bob Clark By the time you read this we will be in the new year of 2018 a year of changes and opportunities. Bob & I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family close around you. We will begin our adventure this year at Officer s Conference where we will come together and learn about how our focus will be on fun and riding. Hope you will be joining us. After this month, we will not be submitting a monthly article to the chapter newsletters. You will be receiving a quarterly District Newsletter along with all GWRRA members, but please feel free to contact us anytime with questions, concerns, or just wanting to visit. We love to hear from you. With that being said, Bob & I wish you a wonderful new year of fun and adventure as we travel these roads together. Look forward to seeing you out and about. Master tour riders who have maintained their active status by remaining certified for 15 consecutive years are eligible to be recognized as Life Grand Master. Congratulations Dick on receiving this exclusive award for an achievement level well deserved.

9 For my birthday and the New Year, I took the opportunity to treat myself to a new helmet. Its inaugural ride was our New Years Day ride. For me, starting in Lompoc to Pismo for breakfast, then a long, all secondary roads ride to Jalama Beach for burgers and finally back to Lompoc, so I was in it for most of the day. It s not necessary to mention the brand, although it is one of the most popular and reasonably priced flip-front helmet on the market. I never realized just how worn out my 12 year old helmet was until I slipped on the new one. It took a little work to get it ready to ride. The accommodations for head phones were inadequate necessitating some extensive carving with an Exacto knife and removal of foam to get the J&M speakers to fit. I highly recommend, if you re wearing an old helmet, upgrading to a new helmet. If you don t feel confident carving up the interior and installing your communications, I d be more than happy to help. 10 Editor s note: Please enjoy part one of a new series of articles featuring the California Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team, written by our old friend Mike Douglas. Precision Riding with a Flair! Tigger Swing? Infinity? Roger s Mix? Diamond Burst? Any ideas as to what these are? Well up to a couple of years ago, neither did I. Then while attending the 2015 California District Convention in Bakersfield, I was asked to operate a camcorder and record the performance of some group of Goldwing riders that called themselves the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. OK I said, but what is a precision motorcycle drill team? Merriam-Webster defines a Drill Team as an exhibition marching team that engages in precision drill. If you substitute motorcycle for marching, you get the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. A team consisting of several motorcycle riders and performers demonstrating incredible precision maneuvers on Honda s luxury touring bike, the Goldwing. Think of it like what the Thunderbirds do in the air, the Gold Angels do in a parking lot. So how did it start you ask? In 1999, a group of Goldwing riders from Southern California decided to watch the Arizona drill team perform at a motorcycle rally. They were so impressed that they convinced the Arizona team to show them a few drills and maneuvers. Being instantly hooked, the California riders decided to form their own motorcycle drill team. Thus, the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team was born some 18 years ago. Some of the founding (Charter) members are still actively participating today. That first year the team grew to 10 riders and they held practices twice a week to hone their newly discovered skills. During the 1999 California District Rally in Bakersfield some of the AZ drill team showed up and joined in on the performance. That was similar to pouring gasoline on a fire. They were seriously hooked and wanted more! In 2004, the Gold Angels were personally invited to participate in the International Drill Team competition held in Nashville, TN. The team performance was so impressive, they received a standing ovation for two new and innovative formations. That always looks good on the resume! The Gold Angels are a Not-for-Profit organization and never charge for a performance. Since its inception the team has focused on fundraising events such as the San Diego Toy for Tots, Elko Motorcycle Jamboree and Camp Pendleton s

11 Motorcycle Safety Days. Many of the GWRRA chapters request the Gold Angels to perform at their individual rallies. The team also performs at many district, region and national events along with some local community events. Each team member is a volunteer and responsible for the costs associated with his or her motorcycle. These costs also include all travel expenses incurred during a performance and all practices. These riders do it because they truly enjoy it. So, what lies ahead for the Gold Angels? In February, they will be performing at CA- 1I s Valentine s Ride. 16 Assistant Chapter Director L a r ry C l a r k ON ASSIGNMENT To those who may not realize what the actual statement On Assignment means, It is secret wording that only the Illuminati and the Newsletter Editor knows for sure. It means, you didn t write a newsletter article for that month, as you promised under signed oath in front of God and everybody on this planet, dummy! In response to such allegations, I will attempt to justify my irregularitylessness (spell check didn t like that word), to the masses who consume my monthly newsletter article and line their trash cans with them. Henceforth, please find my defense listed under back peddling. While in Africa on Safari to save the endangered species of the monkey s uncle, I realized I had forgotten my typewriter at the laboratory while writing an article on my discovery to cure forgetfulness. Needless to say, I was distracted saving the Whales, Condors, and spotted Owls, Kit foxes and promiscuous Senators. So in my defense and to establish credibility to the general public. I find I am without excuse and stand on the fifth of which I just finished off. Have a Very Happy New Year. I promise never to forget the newsletter article again until the next time. 18 WHAT S COOKIN WITH DARLENE? Happy 2018 Fellow Wingers! What did you get for Christmas? We got a few "special" gifts! The first was on Christmas Eve at 9:52 Texas time. Our FIRST Granddaughter Lily AnnMarie Hammons 5 lbs 6.6 oz and 17 inches long - birthed in the amniotic sac in tact (which is like one in 80,000 births). She is doing well and her two brothers absolutely adore her! Final score (so far) for Kevin and me: 6 grandsons and 1 granddaughter! We look forward to snuggling and spoiling her soon. The other special gift was from my daughter, we got an instant pot! For those that don't know what that is... well it's just amazing! Think of your crock pot, your rice cooker, your pressure cooker, your yogurt maker, your vegi steamer, and your soup pot all rolled up into one! YUP, that is what it is! Sooooo last night I made a pork loin roast (about 2 lbs) and a yummy pomegranate ginger sauce in less than an hour! Pork Loin with Ginger Pomegranate Sauce Serves: Makes 4 servings Ingredients: 2 pounds pork loin Pepper to taste ¾ cup orange marmalade ½ cup pomegranate juice 2 teaspoons grated ginger 1 lime, juice 2 tablespoons soy sauce 3 cloves garlic, minced Procedures: Set multi-cooker on BROWN setting. Add oil to the cooker. Pepper the pork and add to the cooker. Brown the roast on all sides (should take about 5 minutes). Mix the remaining ingredients and pour them over pork. Close lid. Turn knob to pressure and set multi-cooker on HIGH pressure cooker setting for 35 minutes and let come down naturally. Remove pork loin and cover with aluminum foil. Set cooker on BROWN and bring sauce to a boil. When desired consistency is reached, pour over the pork loin and serve. I'd love to hear any feedback you have... do you have one? 20 Mike Ridgway Hello Gold Wing riders. My name is Mike from Chapter Q, and I am here to help if I can. During our trip to Wing Ding in Montana two of our Wings broke down. It cost one rider approx. $ the other about $ to get home. This really bothers me to no end! I went out and purchased a Motorcycle / Trike tow unit for my pickup truck. Now I am retired, so I have all the time in the world! I would like to offer to any Winger that breaks down and after using all of their AAA towing benefits and any other tow services and they still are not home, CALL me and I will go get them FREE, just pay for my gasoline and buy me a hamburger.
