3 VSDA Presidents Report Happy New Year to all. Our thoughts are with any dancers, family and friends, who may have been impacted by the recent fires around Victoria and we ask that when travelling anywhere, please take care and be fire smart for the rest of summer. Well, the festive season is now over and the New Year is underway and I trust everyone had a great time eating and drinking. Now it's time to get back into the swing of it and dance off any extra calories that we may have gained over the festive time. Not all clubs are back from their break just yet and there are some that are open. Check out dates to remember, to see which ones are open and go along and enjoy what will be a great year for square dancing. The Country Crossroads TV show is still being replayed on foxtel. I have seen it three times now and for those who may have missed it, you can view all the shows on the web site. There is a link from the VSDA web site, or you can go to countrycrossroads.com.au and follow the prompts. The Whittlesea Country Music festival is almost here. If you would like to be part of this fun day see advert in this issue of the SAV for more details. The 45 th State Convention is fast approaching, so if your have not booked yet, you still have time to register. Come along for a fun packed time on the Farm and a free BBQ before the AGM. on Sunday 9th March. I will be renominating for the position of President at the next AGM and have accepted the position of convenor for the 46 th State convention in 2015.There will be more information relating to this very soon. 4 Round Dance Association of Victoria As the new RDAV president I would like to wish all readers on behalf of the RDAV a very Happy New Year and the wish that 2014 is memorable for all. Our annual AGM /Christmas Dance in November 2013 went well and a new committee was elected to enthusiastically plan the RDAV s path in Please see earlier page for notification of other executive positions. By the time this magazine is circulated we will already have had our first committee meeting and Social Dance for the year, so keep a look out for future events. Our annual fundraiser is booked for 22nd March at Bunnings, Moorabbin. Come and say hi to our friendly team of sausage sizzle experts. Programing for the State Convention in March is complete and we are sure that you will enjoy the rounds we are presenting for you. Would love to talk about your thoughts on the program. Don t forget that the RDAV and their Cuers are open to all square dancers to have the opportunity to learn rounds and further their dancing skills. Talk to a club cuer or somebody who round dances, to see how you too can learn. Beginners classes available. Have a look on our new Web Site and catch up with the latest happenings in the RDAV and Club News. Coral Wegmann President. 2 Publicity Report 2014 has arrived and dancing has already started with some clubs. If you are participating in the demo dance at the Whittlesea Country Music Festival, there is no site allocated yet, but I am sure we will be easy to find. Please be there between 9.30 and 9.45am for a 10 o clock start. The dress code is square dance attire. The State Convention is not far away, so get your registrations in and come to Shepparton for a fun weekend. I am hoping, this year, there will be a greater number of new dancers attending clubs in their beginners classes. Remember one way to promote our wonderful activity is word of mouth. So wherever you are, try to get a word in about square dancing. Promote, be positive and let people know how much fun they can have. If we all make a little effort it can make a difference. Lets help keep square dancing alive in 2014 and beyond, remember there's nothing square about square dancing. Diane Jameson. Publicity Officer.

7 ACEY SQUARES Naracoorte SA Club News Contacts: Chris & Alan Hall Happy New Year. Our scheduled first night back on 17 th January did not happen. You guessed it, due to the heat. 44 deg is too hot to dance without the aid of air conditioning. We will endeavour to start on 24 th January. We watched the news with amazement, Australia is burning, Italy has floods, ice breaker ships are being frozen stuck in the Antarctic, Norway loses an entire historic village due to fire, we just don t understand our world events. Where has the happiness gone. Am beginning to think I won t watch the news at all. Enough of that, time to dance and put some cheer in our lives. Trust you all had a lovely xmas and pleasant welcome to the new year. We look at our calendar for the coming 12 months and see it already filling up fast. It will soon be, where has the year gone, as time doesn t stand still for anyone. Best wishes for a successful 2014 and happy dancing. ACTIV-ATES Frankston Vic 3910 Caller: Paula Wright Happy New Year. What a hot start for some clubs hope it will keep cool for a while as our club dosent start back untill Feb 6. It was lovely to have Rex visit from the UK again, he is always a vibrant addition to our club nights. Congratulations to Roger and Valma on their first wedding anniversary, Graham and Gay on the celebration of their first grandson and Joan on her new grandchild also.. 8 AUSTRALIANA DANCERS Somerville Vic 3912 Caller: Jaden Frigo Festive spirit abounded throughout the hall for our Christmas Break-up dance. Over 7 sets of dancers having a jolly time with great dancing and delicious food. Thanks to visiting callers Colin, Janice and Ian. Our combined Christmas Eve BBQ and social dance with Phoenix Squares was a great way to celebrate Christmas Eve. We are looking forward to an even better event next year. We launched our year with a tropical atmosphere for our Hawaiian theme night. Everyone got into the spirit, with lei s and grass skirts abundant. Thanks to all the visitors who joined us for the night. We recently commenced a new round dance class on Sunday afternoons, due to dancer interest, with everyone enjoying a new challenge. Don t forget to get your tickets for our 2nd Birthday weekend featuring Paul Bristow (UK), Colin Dandridge and Jaden Frigo. We are looking forward to a terrific weekend. AUSTRALIANA TUESDAYS Somerville Vic 3912 Caller: Jaden Frigo Our year finished on a high with two great Christmas Break-up dances. The hall looked very festive and everyone enjoyed lots of fun dancing. Thanks to Ann for her cueing on the Rounds Break-up. Our first plus night for the year was cancelled due to the extreme heat, we are looking forward to resuming on the 28th January. The first round dance night back was a good night with the dancers learning their first multi-rhythm dance. BURRA SQUARES MacLeod Vic 3085 Caller: Neil Wynn Happy New Year to everyone. Hope you all had a good break, and are refreshed for another year of fun and dancing. Our break up dance and Christmas social events went off very well, as usual, and were well attended. Our trial club New Year s Eve dance was also well received with our dancers, so we may give it another go next year. Not much else to report. At the time of writing we have not started dancing yet, but we have some good plans for the coming year. Hope to see you all on the dance floor soon, trying to dance off all that Christmas food. 9 CHEMISTRY SETS Deer Park Caller: Ralph Weise Cuer: Adrian Weise A very happy new year to you all, let s hope that it will be a better one than last year. Prior to Christmas we lost two great callers, Ian Mitchem and Bill Pendlebury and we extend our deepest sympathy to both Ian and Bill s families. Our Christmas break-up was an excellent night with approximately 8 squares enjoying themselves. We thank everyone who came along to support the evening, we also thank those who helped decorate the hall and pack up at the end of night. We went along to EZ moving s last night and enjoyed the evening, it was sad to see the club close after 26 years. We wish Ken all the best and we thank him sincerely for helping us out one night, when we could not be there to open the club due to family illness. We also enjoyed the other club break-ups we attended. The Chemist. CROSSROADS Werribee Vic 3030 DIAMOND VALLEY SQUARES Greensborough Caller: Howard Cockburn Even though the Christmas trees and decorations are all packed away, we can report that our Christmas dance was filled with fun and festivities. Supper was plentiful and in the Christmas spirit. We also had a fabulous night at our end of year social breakup and welcomed along Dawn and Dave as well as welcoming Keith and Norma back to the fold. The night was a flying success just ask the keeper of the drone. We also gathered around to see the first couple of episodes of Country Crossroads and all agreed what a fabulous promo it was of our beloved activity. We start back for the new year on 5 th Feb and hope that the weather is kind to us but would like to remind dancers that our hall comes complete with a fully operational air conditioner. We hope you all had a well-deserved break and look forward to squaring up somewhere soon. Ciao for now. The Scribe Caller: Sharon Lacey No report received Thursday - Masonic Hall. Ester St. (Behind Safeway s) (some Wednesdays in lieu of Thursdays) Non-Weekly, M/S. DPP. Please Note; The Minutes of the 2013 VSDA Annual General Meeting, held in August at Belmont, Geelong are available from the website, or may be mailed to you by contacting the Secretary. 7

10 EASTERN 8 s Paynesville 3880 Caller: Max Hodder Our New Year s Eve dance was a great night. Firstly we had a great tea, then we danced until about 9 o clock and then walked down to the Paynesville foreshore to watch the early fireworks display. Then back for more dancing til suppertime, when we had an enjoyable supper, (which we probably didn t need.) It was good to also have some visitors and fellow dancers from Stradbroke Squares for the evening. Happy New Year to all. Mark R. Buoy ESSENDON SQUARE DANCE CLUB Maribyrnong Vic 3032 Host: John & Ruth Humphrey Caller: Peter Humphries Hello and Happy New Year to all. We hope that everyone has had a very merry Christmas and happy New Year. Our Christmas break up night went off very well and was well supported, so a very big thank you to Peter and Colin for doing such a brilliant job of the calling, it was very much appreciated by all those there. Also a big thank you to the visitors for supporting us, as it was a very hot night. And to our own club members, who helped out with all that needed to be done. A group of us went to Matamoras s New Year s Eve dance and had a great time. Many thanks to Peter and the Matamoras dancers for making us all very welcome. We will be having a Valentines night on the eve of Valentines Day on Thursday 13 th February with Peter and Colin providing the calling. For details please see the advertisement elsewhere in this issue. Until the next time happy dancing to all. E-Z MOVING Glenroy Vic 3046 Caller: Ken Lazarus Hello Dancers, this is the final report from E-Z Moving SDC, We have decide not to continue into the new year due to reduced numbers and the initial news that our hall was to be sold and demolished. The support and dedication of our members has never been in question, however with our low numbers, members have felt under pressure to attend every week to ensure that the dance could run, and this pressure shouldn t preclude people from doing other things from time to time, especially family activities. For this dedication, we thank all the members of the club, also for their friendship, support and good humour. We, as club, would also like to thank all the former members and visitors who have supported us during the past 26 years and helped make our group a wonderful and truly rewarding experience. Our dancers may use this time to visit other clubs, spent more time with family, or reconsider how to spend their leisure time, whatever their individual choices, we wish them all the best in going their separate ways and are sure that they wish the extended Square Dancing family all the best in it s future endeavours. 8

11 GOLDEN SQUARES Narre Warren Caller: Graham Jameson Caller: Charmaine Jameson A happy new year to everyone. We are back dancing and inspite the hot weather have had some fun times. Our hall is so cool with the airconditioning and with a very thoughtful Monic and family providing icy poles for everyone, was just what we needed. Our New Years Eve Dance went off well. A great turn up and some fantastic calling and dancing. Graham was well enough to call, however Janet Cook, Georg Lynn and Charmaine helped to spread the load. It never ceases to amaze me how much food our square dancers can eat! Supper was at 10.30pm 4 dozen Party Pies 3 dozen Sausage Rolls, 2kilo of Hot Dogs, and a large assortment of other food. There was very little that wasn t eaten. A job well done everyone true to square dance form. Looking forward to Remember we need to promote our wonderful activity, so talk to anyone you can and let's get some new dancers happening. HARLEQUIN ROUNDS Heatherton Christmas has been and gone! We had a wonderful break up on Monday the 16 th December. Thank you to all our visitors and regular members for making the night such a memorable one. We even managed to squeeze in two square dance calls with Mike Davey. Barry and I have been working on the Club Website page over Christmas so have a look at it some time. Lots of photo s!! Harlequin Rounds opened on the 20 th January and we look forward to venturing into the finer details of some Phase III + IV rhythms. We had a few enquiries for beginners and so we are commencing at 6.30pm on Monday nights to cater for initial learning. If more inquiries come in, we may look at another night for beginners. This is a perfect time for anybody interested in learning or refreshing their round dancing to join us. Give me a call if you are interested. Happy New Year to everybody. Barry and I wish you a wonderful 2014 filled with health and happiness. Don t forget to look on our Web Site and catch up with the latest happenings in the RDAV and Club News. JAYBEE SQUARE WHEELERS Notting Hill Cuer: Coral Wegmann Caller: Mike Davey Cuer: Pat Saunder finished on a high note as Crossroads Howard and Brenda and even another Dennis (one is enough) and Heather from as far away as Geelong visited the club to celebrate the festive season, along with Santa and the Whitehorse dancers. Mike and Howard warmed us up for the Good Shepherd Xmas Party, where the entertainment commenced with the Lotto Love's grandson Liam performing a vocal showman routine beyond his years, stamping his future as a career entertainer. Following on stage, was some inferior exposed talent that didn't leave you dangling wondering what the act was all about and luckily Xmas tinsel and baubles protected the crowd from a rude awakening ahead of their very short careers. Laurina struggled to call with a sore throat and Pat-A-Rounds showed professionalism by not being fazed once again after 19 years with the flashy dustcoats before her eyes is our 30th year and promises to be exceptional. 12 KALEIDOSCOPE Heathmont Caller: Janice Alexander Another year starting - and hopefully we are all rested and ready to go - it's going to be another busy year! I wish one and all a wonderful Kintyre will not be recommencing until March, due to a number of circumstances. Club members have been notified and I thank you for your patience. As soon as the hall details are finalized, I will ensure these are printed in the next edition of the SAV and then I will be able to say welcome to anyone wishing to make a visit to our club night. 13 MATAMORAS (Mondays) Springvale North Vic Caller: Peter Humphries Happy New Year. Once again we have been struck with hall problems. We returned to dancing for one week and found out that we couldn t have the hall for the next four weeks due to renovations. Our next night back will be 17 th Feb. The good news is that we had a great New Years Eve dance to bring in the new year. It was great to see so many dancers travel from the other side of Melbourne to join us. Our one and only night was a really good night with everyone enjoying a new year supper. We welcomed visitors from Essendon & Australiana. MATAMORAS (Wednesdays) Springvale North Vic Caller: Peter Humphries Happy New Year. We have had one night of plus to start the new year. It was good to get back dancing. All those who attended our new years eve dance had a great night. Unfortunately, we have lost our hall for 4 weeks due to renovations. Our next plus night will be the 19 th Feb. PAT-A-ROUNDS Pinewood Cuer: Pat Saunder Finished with a lovely Christmas breakup, with many cuers. Ella, Coral and Carol, also Mike and Janice calling squares. Thank you to my wonderful club members, for their support over the last year. Congratulations to Pat and Bobbi on their engagement. Do-si-dos and 2-steps started the new year with a bang. With Mike and Peter calling and Coral and I keeping the round dancers happy. Thank you, Lorraine, who looked after the door on both forementioned dances. Please check the diary for closures when I will be away in Hawaii. No report received PHILIP ISLAND SQUARES Cowes Cuer: Graham Jameson Welcome back and a happy 2014 to you all. Our Christmas breakup was a fun time and the Salvation Army came along once again and received a large donation of new toys for their Christmas charity. Thank you everyone who kindly donated a toy. The Jamos PHOENIX SQUARES Forest Hill Caller: Colin Dandridge Our January workshops have been going well with some Left handed chaos along with some Fractional dilemmas. It was good to have most of our regulars, along with some visitors share in the experience. We will be starting a Plus class in February for anyone wishing to take the next step and learn something new. Fiona is coming along with her calling and putting the moves together rather well in her hoedowns next step is the resolution side!! It has been good to have Jaden along as well to share in some of the calling. Website address: A SAD LOSS Else had been with the Club since it s beginning. Someone s passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. He/she did far more than a normal person s share of work, whenever there was a job to do, a social function to attend, funds to be raised one name was on everyone s lips Let Someone Else do it. It was common knowledge that Else was among the largest contributors of his/her time to the club. Whenever there was a need for volunteers, everyone just assumed S. Else would. A wonderful person, sometimes appearing superhuman. But a person can only do so much. Everybody expected too much of S. Else. Now he/she is gone, we wonder what we re going to do. He/she left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to do things Else did? When you re asked to help, remember we can, unfortunately no longer rely on poor old Someone Else. 12

No report received ROSELLA ROUNDS Forest Hill Vic 3131 Cuer: Fiona Callaghan Hope everyone had a good break from dancing and now ready to get back into it. There isn t much to say, but I hope all had a Merry Christmas. We have not started back as yet. I will be starting beginners on our first night. Please see advert in this publication. Due to various reasons I have heard that a few of my club members will not be returning. I hope you keep dancing or you are welcome back at anytime. My first night back will be the 7 th of February I hope to see you on the dance floor. Keep cool in this heat. Rosy the Rosella SAPPHIRE SQUARES Merimbula NSW Caller: George Pitt Happy New Year to everyone. Hope all enjoyed the break. We look forward to our club nights recommencing at the end of January. We had a very nice Christmas meal out in December and were joined by June & Charles Waring from Sydney who also danced with us the previous week; always nice to see them. We look forward to catching up with many of you on the dance floor throughout the year, and hope lots of new dancers come into our activity. February will be busy for us. Around the middle of the month some of us are looking forward to joining Eastern 8 s in Marlo for a few days of fun, and dancing to Phillip Aslanidis, and on the 22 nd February we are having a club visit from around 30 Canberra dancers who are coming to Merimbula for the weekend, exploring the area and dancing with us. 24 SOUTHERN CROSS Albert Park Caller: Howard Cockburn Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Wait! That was last year We are happy to report that our Christmas Dances and end of year celebration were well attended and lots of fun. As always, we offer a vote of thanks and appreciation to those who have supported us during the year and hope that we continue to offer the type of dancing that you enjoy. We hope everyone has had a restful time over the Christmas break and are now revved up and ready to go in SCP reopens in early Feb (see dates to be remembered). Love will certainly be in the air when SCA reopens on Valentines Day eve. Just how many lovey dovey songs will Howard pack into the evening?? Stay tuned for the next issue. Catch you on the dance floor somewhere soon. STRADBROKE SQUARES & ROSEDALE ROUNDS Sale Contact: Susie & John Caller: Janet Cook We had a perfect weather day for our Xmas breakup and it was so nice to see lots of visitors. Thank-you for making the long trek to Rosedale to join us. Special thanks to Graham, Charmaine and Bernadette for helping with the calling. For our newer dancers, it was their first chance to dance to different callers and they sure enjoyed it, despite some nerves. Lollies proved popular as always and the lunch was just superb. Afternoon tea was also delicious. Club has already started back with 2 new dancers on our first day back. We have also been lucky to manage and miss the hot weather and have great days for dancing. Janet has got lots of new tricky ways of doing the moves for us as well. Our intermediate dancers are now starting on their mainstream and coping really well. SUNNYSIDE LODGE Heatherton Cuer: Ella Whyte Our Christmas BBQ and New Year s Eve celebrations were once again happy and enjoyable nights. They were enjoyed by everyone who came along and made them such a success. Thanks to George Lyn and Ron Mennie for their Calling. Visitors, Kevin Leydon, Michael Gaylor and his partner, Rhonda from Pegasus were welcomed. We are now back to normal and busy getting ready for another year of dancing. We are looking forward to celebrating our Saturday night club s 57 th birthday in February. This year, we are again very fortunate to have Mike Davey as our feature Caller. It promises to be a great night and you are all invited to come along and celebrate this special occasion with us. (see advertisement) 14

25 SUNNYSIDE ROUNDS Heatherton Cuer: Ella Whyte The year 2013 ended on a high note with all our Christmas festivities. The mechanical Christmas decorations around our lovely venue kept us entertained throughout the festivities. Our very successful Christmas party finished with a special Christmas tea which everyone enjoyed - especially Ella s lovely Christmas pudding. Thank you ladies for your contributions to the lovely dinner. Thanks to Maurie for the Christmas Carols, which were once again most enjoyable. Thanks also to Coral for her assistance with cueing on these special occasions. We are looking forward to our birthday, which is to be held in May, when we hope you will join us in celebrating this special event. THE FUN DANCE CLUB Narre Warren Caller: Cuer: Graham Jameson Janet Cook Janet Cook We had a great end to 2013 with plenty of fun, friendship and food at our Xmas breakup. Graham and Janet kept us on our toes with lots of lovely Christmas numbers in both the squares and the rounds. Nice to see some visitors during the month as well. Looking forward to getting back into the fun in TOKEN SQUARES Deer Park Hosts: Barry Pam Hi everybody and a Happy New Year to all, may it be what you would want it to be. All the clubs are now back dancing, and what a welcome back it was too...all this heat... still we all enjoy our favorite pastime, so everyone just "goes". We welcomed visitors from Bendigo for our first dance of the year, and it was lovely to have you join us. We have a few birthdays this month, so Happy Birthday all. By the time this report is printed, our 16th Birthday Dance will have come and gone, so more about that next issue. That's all for now, so remember a hearty welcome awaits you when you visit us. 26 WHITEHORSE Nunuwading Caller: Janice Alexander It was lovely to see so many visitors for Whitehorse's Christmas dance. I hope you all had a relaxing break over Christmas and managed to keep cool. Given the extreeeemely hot weather, only a very small contingent of Whitehorse dancers managed to make it to JB's first night back for the year. We were very grateful for the air conditioning - and thank goodness we have it in our hall too! Several dancers are looking forward to the State Convention which will be here before we know it!. Will be held at the 54th State Convention venue Shepparton High School hall Hawdon St, Cnr. Feshti St. Choose your VSDA Committee for 2014 Continuous tea, coffee and biscuits. 27 Know your Committee 1. When and where did you first hear about square dancing? When a friend introduced me to this fun as she called this activity. 2. What did you want to become when you were 10 years old? A rich man. 3. How long ago is it since you went to see a life show? Which show was it? Probably about 12 months ago when I went to Williamstown little theatre where there is a live show every quarter. 4. What new invention would excite you most? Anything that makes life easier and helps older people with quality of life. I don t like suffering. 5. How did you celebrate you 40 th birthday? Wine, wiskey and song. Hic. 6. Which is the most interesting subject you want to talk about? Travel, especially Australia. Just love this country. 7. Who is your greatest hero or inspiration and why? I would have to say my Grandfather. He taught me what I needed to know to survive. 8. What is your favourite fruit? It would have to be strawberries. Just love the seed on the outside. I grew about 14 different varieties at one stage. 9. Do you play cards, computer games or board games? Which do you pre fer? Card games, as your opponent doesn t know what you have and there is a mystique about holding a deck that no-one knows what you are holding. 10. If you could only watch one TV show for the rest of your life, which one would it be? It would have to be sport, so anything to do with sport. James Fellows, Vice President. **** AMERICAN NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION **** SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS JUNE 2015 We are planning a tour to the American National Convention in We would like to hear from dancers and/or non dancers, who would be interested in joining this tour. We anticipate flying into New York and after a tour there, will head to Massachusetts for the Convention and then continue the tour after the Convention. Once we have an idea of numbers we will start to obtain the best prices possible. We anticipate a tour in the region of 2 3 weeks. Please contact Chris or Celia or or aristi2@bigpond.com 17
