3 Hello Dancers, Another month gone. Doesn t time fly when you re having fun. I am sure a great week-end was had by all at the State Convention in Sale only a few weeks ago. Congratulations should go to the Sub-committee who put in a tremendous amount of effort and work into the presentation of the venue. Didn t the decorations look simple yet spectacular. Congratulations go to the 9.5 Sets who participated in the Dressed Set Parade. Yes,.5 Set was the new club The Silver Spinners, a Wheel-chair set. Yes they are still looking for more people to join their group. If you know of anyone interested in joining, please contact the VSDA Committee. Yes, despite the warmish weather, it did not deter the dancers from dancing to their favorite calls and callers. Thank-you to the Callers and Cuers who put in the time and effort, and to Des for providing the sound equipment and lighting for the week-end. Congratulations to all the dancers who dressed up on the Sunday night in all their glamour and finery. It did look quite spectacular. Even the volunteer ladies from the Sale CFA Ladies Auxiliary dressed for the occasion also. For all the hard work and dedication over more than 10 years, Maureen Venn was awarded a VSDA Life Membership, and to Phillip Venn a Dancer Service Award. Congratulations to you both, a very deserving couple. The venue for the next State Convention in 2011 will be at the YMCA Leisure Centre, Browning Street, Kangaroo Flat, on the 11 th 14 March. You will need to book your accommodation pretty quickly, as there are other events that same week-end. More information will be in the next SAV. Yes, the Venue is AIR-CONDITIONED. The next big event on our calendar is the Australian National Convention in Wodonga, 10 th 14 th June. There is still time to book your tickets. Registrations can be made by getting onto the Australian National Convention Website, and follow the prompts. Happy Easter to you all, and if you plan to be traveling at this time, drive safely and we ll see you somewhere on the dance floor. Yours truly, Carmel Sinclair VDSA President. VSDA Presidents Report President: Carmel Sinclair Victorian Callers Association President: Janice Alexander All reports of the State Convention would indicate that the dancers had a great weekend. Hopefully no-one came home to a damaged house after the storm. The next VCA meeting is scheduled for May. Callers, please contact Mike to confirm your attendance so that catering may be arranged. 1

4 Round Dance Association of Victoria President: Pat Saunder Reports back from the dancers following the State Convention, very encouraging to Ella and I. The Program being slightly lower it enabled them to dance more of the Rounds for the weekend. The clubs are now working revising dances ready for the National Convention for Wodonga. Have you Registered Yet? If not there is still time to register. Are you interested in the Round Dance Festival 2011 or in the Rounds that will be going to the National or State Conventions list? We are still looking for a Secretary. Please contact your Cuer or myself if you can help. Pat Saunder Vale Frank Bennett It is with deep regret that we advise the tragic loss of one of our TAWS members, in Frank Bennett from the Hervey Bay Square Dance Club. Frank & Glenda were widely travelled and would be known to many of you. Frank was en-route to the motorcycle races at Phillip Island, a journey which he had made many times, when he came off his bike. Our sincere sympathy goes to Glenda. Regards, Mal Parrington TAWS National Coordinator CLUB HISTORY Chemistry Sets About 2-3 months before we opened a club we both sat down and said we need a name for the club. We both decided to look around and see what was available for hall hire. At the time the hall we decided was at 50 Station Rd. Deer Park right next door to Orica (then known as ICI Chemicals). Hence the name Chemistry Sets was devised. We opened our club on 13th September 1997 as a learner fortnightly for the first year. After the Christmas 1997 break, we decided to run weekly. From the start, Rosanne, our daughter was keen to learn square dancing. Adrian on the other hand was not interested and didn t start learning until sometime in Both of them started learning rounds in 1999 with Pat Saunder. Adrian has since learned to cue rounds and teaches a half an hour before club. We have seen several people come and go over the 12 years we have operated, Eric and Coralie Garvey has been dancing with us since day one and received their life membership at our 10th birthday. We operate as a fun club and square dance attire is optional. 5 We were very lucky to be at Sale for the Victorian Convention. No hailstorm! And we all enjoyed the fun of dancing, meeting with friends and great entertainment. Although some of us came to the hall, soaking wet. But who cares when you are in the company of so many friends. The Convenor and his Committee, Caller and Cuers, deserve a thank you from us, for all the work, to prepare for the Convention. The decorations were spot on, as usual. The dance floor was well prepared for this onslaught of dancers. We were surprised with the Town Cryer, walking into the hall to open the Friday night. The Dressed Set Parade went nicely and we all enjoyed the entertainment provided by the Lift Set. This time we also had the presence of interstate Callers Jeff Seidel and Alan Kerr. And, of course, congratulations to Philip and Maureen Venn for their well deserved awards. We may have to revisit the date of the VSDA Annual General meeting, but I will keep you informed. The venue of the next 2011 State Convention has not been decided. Thus, I will also need to provide you with that information, as soon as it becomes available. If you know of dancers, who are not a VSDA members and want to join, ask them to please contact Judy Doekes on phone , to ask for a membership form or download the appropriate form from our website Becoming a VSDA member will entitle you to discounts on entry fees, a free small advertisement in the SAV each year and voting for your committee at the AGM. You also become eligible for a ticket in the $50 members draw at VSDA functions. For an additional fee you can also receive the Squares Around Victoria magazine, which is full of information regarding most square dance Clubs in Victoria. Keep smiling; it s free and contagious. 6 BRIEF HISTORY OF VSDA STATE CONVENTIONS By Marion Brown* The first three conventions were held at Warburton Chalet from 1970, with all facilities under one roof - eating, sleeping and dancing. This was a great introduction to State conventions. A fire at the Chalet four days before the 4th convention forced a move to Geelong. Accommodation was at one location, dancing and meals were at the Railway Institute Hall. At the 5th, again in Geelong, our convention badge The Map of Victoria was introduced, with year bars being part of the registration package. Following publicity with demonstrations in the mall, a club started in Geelong. Street demonstrations were held on Saturday morning at most conventions. Also a tour of the district was arranged for Sunday. We moved to Shepparton for the 6th, 7th and 8th, with an active club in Shepparton. The Friday night trail-in dance was held at the local club. On Sunday evening following the dancing, a film session showing VSDA functions and previous conventions was held. We moved to Ballarat for the 9th and 10th. During the 9th, we were to gain publicity with radio and TV interviews. At the 10th, a special supper was held following dancing on the Saturday night. We went back to Shepparton for the 11th. We welcomed our first overseas caller, Chuck Jordan. It was also Warwick Butcher s final convention after 11 years, leaving behind a very good foundation. From the 12th to the 21st, Gary Brown became Convenor. Gary had worked with Warwick on previous conventions. The 12 th to the 14 th were held in Geelong. We moved to Morwell for the 15 th, 16 th and 17 th. At this venue we were able to divide the hall during the afternoon sessions, with rounds in one hall and squares in the other. During this period at Morwell, providing the evening meals became more difficult so this unfortunately discontinued. Those who did attend enjoyed the chance to socialize away from the dance floor. In 1987, with the national being held in Geelong, we held our only convention in Melbourne at Wantirna. We returned to Shepparton for the 19 th and 20 th. Our committee endorsed the words of praise spoken by the Mayor at the opening with regard to the help Alma Matthers willingly gave. Our 21 st Birthday was held at Wodonga. In appreciation of his attendance at many conventions, Jeff Seidel was invited to call for the dressed sets. Seven dancers received a special badge in honour of having attended 21 conventions. On the Sunday between the afternoon and evening sessions, a snags and champs 21 st party was available to registered dancers in the courtyard at the Civic Centre. This was the year that coloured ribbons replaced the name tags. A large cake on the floor in front of the stage was cut by the president at the close of the convention. At the 22 nd, with Ian Williamson as Convenor, we returned to Shepparton. with the theme VSDA Movie land. We moved to Echuca for the 23 rd. The venue at the sports stadium was very cold but the calling and dancing were fine. Then it was back to Morwell for the 24 th. 4

7 BRIEF HISTORY OF VSDA STATE CONVENTIONS CONTINUED In 1994 the big weekend arrived for our 25 th, with Ross Urquhart as Convenor. The convention lived up to expectations with the largest attendance. Dancing was cosy. On Sunday night 5 dancers who had attended all 25 conventions were presented with a special bar A supper was held at the finish of the Sunday night session. We went back to Morwell with Ian again as Convenor. It was decided to have dancers/ callers to be official guests who opened the convention. Warwick Butcher, our first Convenor, was given this honour. This system still continues today. For the 27th we returned to Echuca in March, where the stadium was very hot. Ray Deamer was Convenor for the 28 th at Wodonga. It followed the theme Friendship. Dancers were asked to submit a short poem or verse on friendship. These were then displayed around the hall. The following year for the 29 th we headed to Ballarat at Easter. There was a banner parade of past and present clubs. The decorations related to gold mining. The 30 th was at Wodonga, with Adrian Brown as Convenor. Decorations were shells for a pearl convention. A special certificate was presented to Peg Stevenson and Marion Brown for attending all 30 conventions. For the 31 st, we went to Bendigo and for the first time is was a short weekend following closely on the National held in Victoria. Chris Goffin was Convenor and being mid-winter we had a show scene with ski ramp etc. The 32 nd moved to Sale. It was a very popular venue. This was to be the first of many for Kevin Thomas as Convenor. The theme for Sunday night was Äustraliana. It was back to Wodonga for the 33 rd, with a carnival theme. For the 34 th and 35 th we returned to Sale. In 2003 the theme was the Roaring Twenties and for 2004 the Grand Prix with both being very enjoyable. Also the 35 th saw a revival of The Penguins set who first demonstrated at the Melbourne National in It was great to see and brought back memories to the oldies. We went to San Remo for the 36 th following the National at Warrnambool during Easter. This was only the second convention held on a regular weekend and included the VSDA AGM. It was a good venue and plenty to see at Phillip Island. We returned to Sale for the 37 th in June for a Winter Wonderland. We received great assistance from Stradbroke Squares, especially Jim who made us proud with decorations to transform the hall into a winter wonderland, saving the convention committee a lot of work. The Stradbroke club was formed as a result of publicity during previous conventions held in Sale. The 38 th had Go West to Wodonga as the theme, with western decorations and a large participation by dancers on Sunday night. We returned to Geelong for the 39 th with the theme Around the World. Once again Kevin and his committee did a wonderful job. In 2009 it Ws the 40 th and this was held back in the metropolitan area at Springvale see s us going back to Sale with a new Convenor, James Fellows with the theme of Glamour For all. *Marion Brown has compiled the Archives for all VSDA State Conventions 5

We will have a full report on all the fun and festivities in the next issue. Due to the recent elections being held in our usual hall we opted for a change of venue to the Mil Lel Hall for the evening. It was a nice change of venue and everyone managed to find the hall which was a relief. Special birthday wishes this month to James who turns four and to Bob for his extra special day. Easter is not too far away now. We wish you all a happy and safe holiday and for those travelling, take care. Sorry to hear the closing of Cam bells Creek as it was a lot of pleasure to a lot of dancers. Happy Birthday to Amy and Nola for this month. We hope everybody has a very safe and happy Easter and please gang keep safe on the roads over the holiday period. T/C NO REPORT ESSENDON SQUARE DANCE CLUB Maribrynong Host: John & Ruth Humphrey Caller: Darren Taylor The months seem to go by so quickly and the weather has been a mixed bag of late. Thank heavens for our air-conditioned hall. At the end of February the club again attended the annual Moonee Valley Festival. A big thanks to all our dancers who were able to come along and show their support. Our on stage performances went down well with the crowd, and hopefully we'll have recruited a few new dancers to the club in the coming months. Some of our dancers made the trip to Sale for the State Convention. It was good to see better numbers than in recent times and apart from the problems with the sound quality everyone reported to have had a good time. Thanks to the committee for their efforts and planning for the weekend. 9

12 E-Z Moving Squares Glenroy Caller: Ken Lazarus & Barry Wootten Good weather and good company combined to make for a very enjoyable afternoon for our annual club barbeque recently. Thank you to Christine for providing the venue and to all those who helped make it such a great day. Some of our members traveled down to Sale to attend the Convention. They all reported having a great time and meeting many friends from other clubs as well as great dancing. Despite the hot weather we are dancing with one or two sets and continue to enjoy the support of visitors who help to make our nights of dancing even more enjoyable. Thank you also to our guest callers. GOLDEN SQUARES Narre Warren Caller: Graham Jameson Dancing Tuesdays Weekly Narre Warren Learning Centre, Malcolm Court, Narre Warren. 8pm. MS, DPP NO REPORT ISLAND 8 s Newhaven Caller: Peter Humphries Sorry about the missing news last month. We have had some good nights of dancing. We had a social night at the Bass Hotel. It was great to get together away from square dancing. A bar-b-q is being organised for April. We welcomed visitors from Queensland, Matamoras and Whitehorse over the last month. Until next month, happy dancing 10

13 JAYBEE SQUARE WHEELERS Notting Hill Caller: Mike Davey Cuer: Pat Saunder A happy bunch of 40 went from Squares to a Diamond tribute concert by bus with at least 20 human BSD navigators directing driver Garry to the Zoo, but his request to cage a few before the return trip was denied on cruelty grounds. Margaret (?) had a short stay in lieu of dancing recently, until a Ray of hope appeared, rescuing the damsel from her enclosed predicament. A special thank you to every organizers/helpers/callers/cuers who put together the Sale Convention to make it a very successful weekend highlighted by the fabulous young entertainers, however humidity prevailed as Mike was flushed with success winning the Wet Shirt Award with a last bracket meltdown leaving other contenders in his wake. The AGM awarded Life Membership to Brian and Christine and Distinguished Service Awards to Max, Colleen and Don rewarding their long service and dedication over two decades. CATNAP. KALEIDOSCOPE Heathmont Caller: Janice Alexander Unfortunately the terrible storm kept most dancers home in early March, but we managed to introduce some interesting concepts to those who were able to venture out. Our next night in March was great. We welcomed Colin and Kaye, Glen and Cindy and Abbey for the first time, Pat Saunder cued some rounds and Tony and Christine Bowring were there as well. It was lovely to have George and Phil back and to see Phil up dancing too. Noise levels were up and we all had a great time. No dance over Easter, but back for the third Saturday in April as usual. KELLY COUNTRY Glenrowan Contact: Robyn Hodder Philip Aslanidis came to call for us at our last dance and everyone enjoyed dancing to his calling. He used some variations of calls and because they occur on some of our records, dancers acquitted themselves very well. Cathy Racine, a caller from UTAH USA, who with her husband David has been working in Benalla, called for us also. She and Philip really had the dancers moving along with Rocky Top. It was good to have some Bendigo friends join us. We have had much rain and everything is looking lovely and green. Some dancers are going to Speewa at Easter and some to Merimbula, followed by our "Back to the Shed" dance with Peter Humphries to which we are all looking forward to a great time. We send Eastern Eights our best wishes on their entry into the square dance world. It is pleasing to see another country club. 11

14 MATAMORAS Mondays Springvale North Caller: Peter Humphries Sorry we missed last month. We welcomed visitors over the last months from Merimbula, Golden Squares and Active 8 s. We had another one of our pizza nights, which everyone seems to enjoy. Our beginners have now reached the halfway point by finishing the basic program. We are now dancing rounds for half an hour before the squares. They seem quite popular. See you next month. MATAMORAS Wednesdays Mulgrave Caller: Peter Humphries Sorry about the no news last month. We have a couple of busy months. We have started a new format by dancing rounds a half hour before the squares. Our St. Patricks Day night was a great night with over five squares of green dancing to some great Irish music. NEWPORT/ WESTGATE DANCERS North Altona Caller: Frank Kennedy Trainee: Jaden How quickly the months fly by? It seems no time since Christmas. We hear very good reports of the State Convention. By the sound of it a great weekend of dancing, congratulations to the organisers. Frank has been going to Diamond Valley to assist Sharon with a nice group of new beginners. if you know any one who would like to learn send them over. 7pm pm Thursdays. After 52 years Frank and Joan have decided to move house, frank looking for less repairs in a smaller home. Our 31st birthday coming up soon. see add for details. February was a very quiet month and the fact we closed one night due to over 32degrees does not help. but then again in no time flat we will be dragging out the heaters to our fickle Melbourne weather The Seagull Trainees report. with the hot weather diminishing we can look forward to lots more enjoyable dancing. Everyone is enjoying "fun 12

24 PINE CITY TWIRLERS Narracoorte SA Contacts: Chris & Alan Hall We have had a slow beginning to Clashing with other events, holidays, illness and tragedy our group have found it difficult to dance on Fridays. I am continually told it is time and good company that dissolves sorrow. Our condolences and love go to Sonya and young Matthew on the sad passing of Paul. We trust that time will heal sorrow. As one door closes so then another one opens and we need to see this as a positive thing to enable ourselves to move forward with joy in our hearts. On a happier note some of our group will be travelling prior to and over Easter. Therefore we are closed for next 3 weeks. We look forward to catching up with fellow dancers, meeting and making new friends. Happy dancing. SAPPHIRE SQUARES Merimbula NSW Caller: George Pitt With our birthday weekend coming up this month we are working our newer dancers like mad so that they can join in all the fun. They are doing well. It is lovely to have Wendy & Peter Colhoun back dancing again after Peter being so sick last year. George is keeping well and will probably have his surgery in May. Rosemary & Brad attended the Victorian State Convention and had a wonderful time. They are heading over to the UK next month so will no doubt be taking in a dance or two there. Birthday wishes this month go to George and congratulations to Wendy & Alan on their 48 th wedding anniversary. Look forward to seeing some of you up here this month. ROSELLA ROUNDS Forest Hill Vic 3131 Cuer: Fiona Callaghan On Friday the 5 th of February I started a Round Dance Club in Forest Hill, I have wanted to start a club since I started cueing about 10 years ago. I would like to thank Pat Saunder, Beryl and Mike Harcourt, Ella Whyte, Mum and my Dad who passed away a year and a half ago but I know he is watching and be proud I have started a club. Also my brother who helped me with sound equipment. With these people I have started a club. I now have 3 couples that come regularly and they have now learnt a dance If you wish to come along and join the fun, please feel free. I will cater for all Levels. We have just attended the 41 st State Convention which was great congratulations to James Fellows and his team. That's all for now. Fiona Callaghan Rosella Rounds 14

25 STRADBROKE SQUARES & ROSEDALE ROUNDS Sale Contact: Susie & John Caller: Janet Cook Congratulations to all involved in the convention - it was great fun despite the humidity - but us locals are glad to have got the rain as we need it. Thanks to all involved in our dress set - the dancers and especially Susie for making the outfits. They looked so lovely in club colours as well. We have had some interest from people wanting to learn as a result of the convention and our promotions - now have to wait and see if they turn up to classes. We are also hoping for more follow up interest after the photo and item in the local newspaper. In the meantime the club members are continuing to enjoy themselves and we are adding some plus moves in for some of the more experienced dancers. WE can now do Tea Cup chains and Acey Duecy from most set-ups. Plans underway for our Birthday in July - full advert next issue. Also remember changed date sin April to avoid Easter and Anzac Day - see diary dates. SUNNYSIDE LODGE ROUNDS Heatherton Cuer: Ella Whyte Everyone who attended the State Convention had a lovely week-end. Although the weather was hot, it did not deter the dances from the day sessions. We had a lovely celebration for Sunnyside s 53rd birthday. A warm welcome was extended to Phillip Aslanidis from Bendigo who assisted Ron & Clem with the Calling. Thank you once again to Joy who made and decorated the beautiful birthday cake and thank you to all the dancers who provided the lovely supper. We appreciated the support from the RDAV Cuers: Pat Saunder, Beryl & Mike Harcourt, Fiona Callaghan and Carol Simondson. The gerbera daisy has large colorful blooms, which has made it a favorite with flower lovers. There is a legend that a nymph wanting to escape unwanted attention, transformed herself into the daisy. Ever after this the April birth flower has the flower meaning of implicitly and modesty IBC

36 You still have time to register for the Wodonga Sports & Leisure Centre is the venue, where we are having this Convention from 10th to 14th June. The Committee has been working tirelessly, so you can experience the best dance event ever. Decorations are looking great and are almost completed, the program is due to go to print and the website will soon be updated with the new accommodation guide and a local bus schedule. However, if you are still looking for a place to stay, please phone the Visitors Centre (toll free) on They have a current listing of available accommodation for the Queen s birthday weekend. The latest program and dressed-set figures are due to go on our website at the end of March. Visit to get the latest information and make contact with the Committee if you need any answers. Wodonga is situated on the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Many visitors to the area like to kayak on the Murray, others prefer to have a game of golf and there are plenty of signposted walking and cycling trails. A drive to the summit of Huon Hill, has panoramic views and the Albury War Memorial is another lookout. The original Ettamogah Pub, modeled on the archetypically Aussie watering hole, created in the drawings of Ken Maynard is north of the city at Table Top. Thurgoona, also north, has the Kinross Woolshed, which serves as the area s top country-and-western venue, featuring big-name acts amid the shearing shed décor. Nearby Wonga wetlands, attracts abundant birdlife and marsupials. What should not surprise is that this part of the country is rich in villages, proud of being steeped in history. Yackandandah, Beechworth, Chiltern and Corowa all have small museums and historical buildings. Is it any wonder Wodonga was chosen for this Convention? We know you will have a great time exploring the neighbourhood. Please remember to have fun, be happy and meet with your friends to share the enjoyment square dancing provides for us.
