6 ~~J ~ P_U._l_I_(I_T_Y_._IP_G_._T During the month of November, we have been very busy going to week-end dances. We had a great time at Mount Gambier and also at Hall's Gap. VSDA Publicity had to take a back seat this time. However, we wore our Committee badges for the Warrnambool National Convention and many enquiries have been received relating to this even~ I have also designed a leaflet for the National Convention. It is on OUt website mainly for dance clubs overseas. The flyer can be printed and displayed on their notice boards. You can also find lots of other information on the website, such as information regarding the VSDA committee, the various clubs in Victoria and Australia, as well as heaps of activities and direct links to clubs. There are also links to various overseas clubs if you are making travel plans and want to get contacts for dancing. The AGM for the Round Dance Association of Victoria was held on Saturday, 8 th November. A new Committee was appointed and yours truly has also committed to being their Publicity Officer. In the meantime the VSDA Dinner dance, the VCA dance with Steve Turner and the Trivia night will provide us with great entertainment. March 2004 will see us at the Victorian State Convention in Sale where we will set the scene of the formula 1 Grand Prix. I hope you did not miss the early bird registration. We are sure to see a lot of you in the coming month when visiting many (~ the Club's Christmas parties. The Festive Season is upon us once again, and I would like to take this opportunity to send you all my best wishes. Keep smiling; it's free and contagious. ~ Mary Beerens, Publicity Officer. 8 Dear SA V Editor As I'm sure you are aware, our club mascot Federation Frog went missing and we were later notified he had been frognapped! After that another frog went missing and had suffered the same fate. A ransom demand was made (100 chocolate frogs) for both their return. The second frog was dumped with photographic proof of Federation Frog's captivity and the ransom delivery instructions. Due to the quick action of the Frog Squad and the cool head of Constable T. Bear of the Search and Rescue Squad, Federation Frog was rescued and the frognapper taken into custody. The pending inquiries of Constable T. Bear&#61666 mean that the frognapper's identity cannot be revealed but it has been discovered that his motives were to take chocolate frogs from the rich and give them to the poor. We can, however, provide a photograph of the successful outcome (thf'""\ frognapper is the one with the handcuffs on). We are indebted to Constable T. Bear &# The Feds NB. Constable T. Bear is a registered trademark of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation which perpetuates the memory of Victorian Police Offi- ~ cers killed in the line of duty through the support of worthwhile community projects in Victoria. Since 1988 the Foundation has provided significant funding to create specialised medical facilities in our public hospitals that provide life saving treatment to over 45,000 Victorians each year. Constable T. Bear can be purchased from the Foundation or at all 24 hour Police Stations. Merry Christmas & a happy New year to all. The Jamos ISLANDS's Newhaven Phillip Island Caller: Peter Humphries How quickly the closing date comes round each month; hardly time to get things ~ squared up. Kelly country was loads of fun, thanks to Robyn and her merry band. Thanks also to Brian and the clever way he moves us "chess-like" around the floor. So eager to dance recently, one of our number was fined for speeding on her way to the hall. That's dedication ' Jack back to celebrate his birthday with us after a quick trip to hospital, but not dancing yet. Our dear friends, Molly and Don called in, and although they're planning to cut their ties with the Island, the ties of friendship will remain. Happy to have Bev and Don from Matamoras dancing with us, too. Lots of dancing and partying corning up as Santa's sleigh approaches, but in case we don't meet, we wish that your Christmas is safe and happy and your New Year filled with good dancing. L.O.W. He was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation, the old "Welcome to Reservoir SD Club" banner and a "Money Box". Bill wasn't sure what he was going to do in his retirement but he would still visit "Lakesiders" and other clubs whenever possible. A group from Essendon who couldn' t attend wanted to farewell Bill and so he did a Dame Nellie Melba and turned up for another informal "farewell" the following week. Jim started square dancing in 1980 with Lee and Nance McFadyean at Chadstone Squares and Rounds and also with Mike Davey at Surfside 8's and later with Jaybee Square Wheelers. He also clogged with Bayside and Community Cloggers. Jim was a unique man and an enthusiastic dancer. He had the wonderful ability to make everyone laugh, unfortunately because of his circumstances prior to his death he was not able to dance, he will be missed by his many friends. To his wife Delia we extend our sincere sympathy. From Margaret Meredith VALE - CAROL RAPP (ROWE) EI Paso dancers suffered a sad loss with the passing of Carol Rapp (Rowe). Carol was a fun person, popular with other dancers and very caring. Not wanting to cause concern to her friends, she never indicated that she had a serious health problem. She will be sadly missed. 35 NSW COUNTRY WEEKEND WITH FRAl"VK KENNEDY While caravanning about seven years ago, and perusing the "South Pacific Revue" we found a Square Dance Club in Central NSW by the name of "Clodhoppers" run by Pat & Bill Dobson at Dubbo, we enquired about another club called the "Bulldusters" they directed us to this, their other club at Tallawang via Gulgong. ~ Halfway between Gulgong and Dunedoo turn into the property through the creek, park the caravan near the shed and plug in, all facilities near the van. Dancing is held in a purpose built hall behind the house. We found out later where the name "Bulldusters" was derived. Two possibilities (1) when stepping out of the car guess what? Cow manure everywhere. (2) Bill now deceased told some beaut stories. We dance at this club usually twice a year; a full weekend in March called by Brian Hotchkies, and another weekend in September run by Frank Kennedy, some other callers during our visits were David Todd, Keith Howard, and Tony Alessi. Visiting dancers travel from Melbourne, Bendigo, Canberra, Sydney and Cobar etc. Dancers arrive in camper trailers, mobile homes, tents and caravans and you can sleep in your swags on the dance floor. ~ We attended again this September, this club has a number of young dancers including a five year old boy by the name of Dylan and his mother Germaine, he was impressive to say the least, in correct position at all times and hand positions were excellent, always smiling. 38 Lettel o to the Editol o Dear Editor I would like to know if there is a protocol within square dancing for coughing and/or using a handkerchief whilst dancing. There have been complaints that it is distasteful to cough, put a hand over one's mouth (or use a hanky) then continue dancing, holding hands, etc. Have there been any formal complaints of this practice, and if so, what should be done to make aware, or reassure, or condemn, the offending ~ dancer/so. I would appreciate it if you could please advise. Yours sincerely, Name & address supplied. "Come and look over here", said Paddy. "It is Michael O'Grady's grave, God bless his soul. He lived to the ripe old age of 87." "That's nothing," said Sean, "Here's one named Patrick O'Toole, "it says that he was 95 when he died." Just then Seamus yelled out, "Hey, here's a fell a that got to be 145 years old!" What was his name?" asked Paddy. Seamus lit a match to see what else was written on the stone marker, and exclaimed, "Miles from Dublin". Page 38 Squares Around Victoria December 2003
