4 PRESIDENT'S REPORT With the Annual General Meeting behind us we are now working toward the Dinner Dance and the 2003 State convention. The Sub-committees have planning well in hand. Back to the A G.M. The downside was in the number of members who attended. The atmosphere was good, with a good program of squares and rounds. The upside was that a fu ll committee was elected for the first time in a number of years. The new committee is listed on page 3 and I look forward to working with them for the next 12 months. Congratulations to the Bluey Day Committee for a job well done. Thanks to the dancers for your support, raising over $5600 on the riight. Due to a family commitment I could not attend the Head Shave Dance, but from reports heard all who attended had a good time, even those who got shaved. As stated at the Annual General Meeting a date has finally been set for the demonstration dance at Federation Square. It will be held on February 23 rd, Please keep this date free so we can show the people of Melbourne what Square Dancing is all about. Other major events coming up are Whitehorse's 50 th Birthday, the R.D.AV. supper dance, and their AG.M. I have requested a two months' leave of absence as I ""ill be travelling interstate to attend State and National Conventions and catch up on family while in their state. Kevin Thomas will be in the Chair during my absence. Yours in dancing Alan Brown President. NATIONAL SQUARE DANCING DETAILS Phone: (Free Call) Page 4 Squares Around Victoria September 2002

Some members are still enjoying visits to other Clubs, including Lakesiders 25th birthday.. We have, however, been fortunate to have our regular visitors come and add excitement and variety to our nights. Christine and Carmel are still battling winter ills and Lisa has had to trip northwards to be of support to her family there. Our 15 th birthday is almost upon us and we have decided on a western theme this year, so hopefully it won't be too hard to find something to wear. It is also good news to hear that Ed and Max are on the mend. So until we meet on a dance floor somewhere, or if you 're in the area. Zoom in. FEDERA TION SQUARES Aspendale Caller: Paul Chadwick Our sincere condolences to Pat and Bill on the death of Pat's father Our Christmas in July was a fun filled night of dancing, delicious food, includin, ' turkey sandwiches and plum pudding with everyone joining in the spirit (and drinking) and dressing for the occasion. The following day was our Christmas Lunch at the local Bistro complete with crackers, party hats and spot prizes. Thanks to everyone for their support and organisation. Our soup night was a great success even if the Pea and Ham soup became vegetable! The kitchen was a flurry of activity - soup stirred, bread cut. Was it a case oftoo many cooks when a strange smell emanated from the kitchen? The wait was worth it and all enjoyed the food and fellowship after the dance. Joel's home baked bread eagerly sought after. Toni is back dancing, Joyce & Nance are cruising the Pacific, Jim & Glenyce are mustering in Gympie. Get well to Joel. The Feds. 11 ISLAND 8's Newhaven Philip Island Caller: Peter Humphries Congratulations to all who organised or took part in the Bluey Day Variety Night. Being in the audience was great and if laughter is the best medicine, then the night must be rated right up there with dancing. The funds raised were in excess of $5000. Les, Eric, Helen, Alan, Jackie and John enjoycd a Pizza Night with Matamoras, but didn 't bring home the jackpot. Thw'sday night dancers are squaring up well. Audrey, Helen and Alan have gone north. John Rowe tried to "Do-Sa-Do" with a cow in the milking shed, the cow stepped back, John's ribs went crack and he wound up in hospital. Good to have you dancing, John. Can't keep a good man down for long! Eight dancers put on a demo for the local VIEW Club' s birthday. It was much appreciated and good promotion, another photo in the local paper. Eric operating the radiators guarantees a warm welcome to all. JA YBEE SQUARE WHEELERS Notting Hill Caller: Cuer: Mike Davey Pat Saunder Our Winter Roundup was successful with about 200 people attending over the weekend. Our 2nd Birthday was a very successful and happy night, with three sets dancing and quite a few sitting watching. Thank you to our visiting friends who turned up on a week night to help us celebrate. We had a visit from SaBy Stephenson from the Launceston Club who is travelling to the Perth Convention via the Northern Territory. Audrey and Ken are eenainly getting to know Kunnunarra in the north of Western Australia. They have had some trouble with their bus, so don't know when we will be seeing them. 12 KELL Y COUNTRY Glenrowan Contact: Robyn Hodder NO REPORT RECEIVED LAKESIDERS Preston Caller: Bifl Pende/bury What a 25th Birthday!! The Re-Union dinner was a talkfest with everyone catching up with old friends. Interesting were photo albums showing how young dancers looked years ago. Bill used to have a moustache as well as a "bit" more hair on top. Past dancers also attended the great birthday dance as did lots of visiting dancers and callers. Thanks to all who helped with the preparations. Particular thanks to Ray for the signs etc. and to Gloria who baked the cake, but was unable to attend. Club members presented Bill with a 25 th birthday commemorative Shield. Sickness and holidays have since cut down on numbers so if you have a free Monday why not join us. Bill hit two unfortunate kangaroos on the way home to Heathcote the week before the SA convention. Hope the panel beaters achieved the impossible. The AGM dance was a very good day with a bright and happy atmosphere at a lovely cost venue. The pub meal afterwards went down very well for all of us. 31 v.e.a. BLUEY DAY VARIETY NIGHT 2002 The idea of a variety night to raise money for Bluey Day came about in about May 2000 with a suggestion to a meeting of the Victorian Callers Association. A date was set for late July that same year. In less than two months, and with a committee of three people, the first Bluey Day Variety '~ Night was staged. Due to the outstanding response of dancers, the venue was too small and so we "crammed" nearly two hundred people into the hall. That night we raised a little over $1400 for Bluey Day. The following year we had enlisted the help of a number of people including a Production Manager. The venue was larger, the acts a little more polished and the presentation a little more professional. In July 2001, the second VCA Bluey Day Variety Night raised over $3600. We were able to do this through the generous support of a number of sponsors. In July 2002 we held the third Variety Night. The venue was excellent with every seat having a good view of the stage. The sound provided by Peter Humphries was again of a high standard. The Production Manager, David O'Hara, ensured a smooth running program and provided the show with effective and appropriate scenery. The hard working group of backstage crew ensured the lighting, microphones and props were at the ready. The performance of all the entertainers was once again excellent and certainly provided "variety". There were singers, comedians, magicians, ~ dancers, poets and more. Mike Davey kept us entertained between acts as our Master of Ceremonies. Through the generous support of our many sponsors, square dancers and friends, this year we raised over $5500 for children living with cancer. What a tremendous effort, thank you everyone. We look forward to presenting the 4th VCA Bluey Day Variety Night next year. ~ VCA Bluey Day Variety Night Committee ~ Squares Around Victoria September 2002 Page 31

32 And YOIl thought it was jllst a machine, an inanimate, characterless gadget.... Priority: Low Is your computer male or female? As you are aware, ships have long been characterised as being female (e.g. "Steady as she goes", or "she's listing to starboard, Captain!"). Recently, a group of computer scientists (all males) announced that computers should also be referred to as being female. Their reasons for drawing this conclusion follow: Five reasons to believe computers ar~ female: 1. No one but the Creator understands their internal logic. 2. The native language they use to communicate,'lith other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. 3. The message "Bad command or file name" is about as informative as "If you don't know why I'm mad at you, then I'm certainly not going to tell you". 4. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval. 5. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. However, another group of computer scientists (all female) thinks that computers should be referred to as if they were male. Their reasons follow: 1. They have a lot of data, but are still clueless. 2. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem. /"'""' As soon as you commit to one you reali se that, if you waited a little longel. you could have obtained a better model. 4. In order to get their attention, you have to tum them on. 5. Big power surges knock them out for the rest of the night. Page 32 Squares Around Victoria September 2002

34 44th AUSTRALIAN NATIONj ll SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION 5 TO 9 -JUNE 2003 Nex't year's Australian National Square Dance Convention will be held in Caloundra on Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast. The dates, 5 th to 9 th June, coincide with the Queen's birthday long weekend. Just an hour's drive north of Brisbane, Caloundra boasts some of the world's best beache s. The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's premier tourist destinations, offering a myriad of attractions and activities. The climate in June is mild with temperatures ranging from about 10 C to around 20 C - one of the reasons why hordes of southern visitors make the coast an annual pilgrimage. Direct flights are available to the Sunshine Coast's Maroochydore Airport as well as the Domestic and International Airports in Brisbane. In addition, Caloundra is accessible by regular intercity coach and rail services. Two venues of international standard will be used for the convention. The main venue will be the Caloundra Indoor Stadium, which features a sprung maple floor of 3000 square metres. This hall is five minutes from the city centre and within walking distance of several large accommodation houses. The Caloundra Civic and Cultural Centre will be the second venue. This centre has been used for two highly successful State Square Dancing Conventions. It is right in the middle of the city within walking distance of accommodation, restaurants ~ and shops. Because Caloundra is a major tourist destination, a wide choice of accommodation is available. Within 20 minutes drive of Caloundra are some well known attractions - Australia Zoo (home of the Crocodile Hunter), The Big Pineapple, Ettamogah Pub, Opals Down Under, The Big Kart Track, The Ginger Factory, Underwater World, Mapleton, Queensland Air Museum and the Glasshouse Mountains. It will be a fantastic. convention and the Management Committee is ready to welcome you at "Caloundra by the Sea in 2003". So make up a group and come on over to Paradise - all your friends will be waiting. Page 34 Squares Around Victoria September 2002
