4 Hi Dancers, Looking at the SAV - Dates to Remember, there are lots of different theme nights around the Clubs. Easter has come and gone, so you can put you Easter Bonnets away for another year and dance a bit more to get rid of the Hot Cross Buns. All About Squares had their 1st Birthday and by the time this issue is out 'Back to the Shed' in the Kelly country will have come and gone. It's good to see there is lots of dancing despite Clubs closing over the Easter break. Coming up events are, Campbell's Creek Week-end, a Magical duet night at Kaleidoscope with Janice and her sister Lorraine, Westgate celebrates its 30th Birthday and Jaybee Square Wheelers celebrate their 25th Birthday. What a fantastic month of dancing. The 50th Australian National Convention in Perth is soon upon us, 4th - 8th June. I'm sure you can still register if you are wanting to attend. It should be great with a fantastic mixture of Australian and International Callers. The Annual General Meeting will be the next activity, on Sunday 16th August, at the Box Hill Senior Citizens Centre. If you have any thoughts about being on the committee next year, you would be most welcome. We are always looking for new people with fresh ideas. There will also be a second hand stall, so if you have any clothes you wish to sell, that are still in good condition, put a price on them and bring them along. We are also looking for any persons will to assist on this stall. The Dinner Dance is on again at the Springvale Town Hall. Book a table or 2 and have a fun night, with a delicious meal and lots of great dancing to some great callers and cuers. Sale is the place for the State Convention Book your accommodation now. Writing this report is making me weary thinking of all the events coming up, just the ideal activity to keep you warm with the cooler weather coming up. See you on the dance floor somewhere. 5 VSDA Publicity Report Publicity Officer: Mary Beerens End March, my partner Ken and I travelled to Europe. Square dancing is also popular in Europe, so we set out to dance. We danced in London UK, in Heidelberg Germany and in Brussels Belgium. Everywhere we went, we were welcomed with open arms. In London we were picked up from the underground station. In Heidelberg, we thought we could walk, and we did. However, it was much further than we thought and a dancer took us back to the motel. In Belgium we stayed with dancers, who we knew from the Warrnambool National Convention and they took us to Brussels for the dance. All Clubs we visited were dancing three sets. In London the dancers only wore square dance attire once a month (first week). In Germany most dancers were in dance attire and in Belgium about half of the dancers. Everywhere we received a small gift, either keyring or badge of the Club. It was great to visit overseas Clubs. The VSDA Annual General Meeting is being held at the Box Hill Senior Citizens Centre, Cnr. Carrington & Thurston Sts, Box Hill on Sunday 16 th August. It is important to be there, so you can elect your new VSDA Committee. Some of our well-seasoned Committee officers will not stand again. Therefore, it is important you have a say in the new appointments for 2009/2010 and meet the new Committee. The VSDA Committee could come in for a drastic change. In the meantime we have a free dance for VSDA members. Non-members can become members on the day and then will save $6.00, almost their entire membership fee for the year. We will have the membership draw for $50.00, door prizes and a raffle. There will be a second-hand stall, so maybe you can bag a bargain. Or maybe get some extra money by selling your pre-loved square dance attire. The VSDA will keep a percentage. If you bring in some gear, make sure it is marked with your name and the money you want for the article. While at the Perth National Convention, 5 th to 8 th of June 2009, we will start to take registrations for the 2010 National Convention in Wodonga. The theme is Under the Big Top and our motto is Let s meet again in twenty10. Come to visit The greatest show on earth in Wodonga, Victoria. Even if you don t go to Perth, you will have the opportunity to register online and get a nice surprise. 40% Discount on the regular ticket price. During the Perth Convention visit our website, register at and Be a Winner. Keep smiling; it s free and contagious. Mary Beerens, Publicity Officer. Squares Around Victoria May June 200 Page 5

Any topics members would like covered in Skills and Development sessions should also be directed to Mike. Janice Alexander President Victorian Callers Association President: Janice Alexander Secretary: Mike Davey Round Dance Association of Victoria President: Pat Saunder Secretary: Carol Simondson We had a visit to the Mt Waverley Masonic Hall which is to be the venue for the Spring Festival in September and I think everyone will be surprised at how great it is. The first workshop for 2009 was used for revisiting dnces which are to be voted on at the National Convention in Perth. Due to the lack of attendance, this will be the last workshop at the moment. Good luck to our dancers who are travelling to Perth to represent Victoria Pat Saunder President Ah Beng As many of you will be aware, I travel to Asia on a regular basis. During these travels I have been fascinated by the Ah Beng jokes. In this issue I will share some more of them with you. REMEMBER! It s up to YOU to keep the FUN in Dancing Page 6 Squares Around Victoria May June 2009

12 KELLY COUNTRY Glenrowan Contact: Robyn Hodder Our "Back to the Shed" dance with Peter Humphries was great fun, interesting dancing, meeting up with friends and tasty food, especially the hot soup. Sunday morning plus was interesting and challenging. In May we will commence our Sunday dances. 3.00pm start. The year is certainly flying by and the winter cold has come upon us very quickly. We will be looking at a new format at the club shortly. We will be taking in new beginners, possibly July, and will need to make adjustments to the format to accommodate. 22 NEWPORT & WESTGATE DANCERS North Altona Caller: Frank Kennedy Trainee: Jaden What a Quiet month. Closure due to hot weather policy makes a big break for fortnightly clubs. Thank Heaven hot weather has gone for another year. Young Jaden is now officially a trainee with Frank and our club. We hope he is as successful as the other 5 Trainees who now all run their own clubs. Our club is very proud of the 5 successful callers of today who started with Westgate. Also of the many Callers who called with us before they ever opened their own clubs. By this issue, Westgate s 30th Birthday will have come and gone. Somehow it does not seem like 30 years. Frank and Joan still undecided about a North trip this year, we will keep you posted. The Seagull Trainee Report: Many of us attended the RCH Fundraiser dance. Well done to everyone involved. Magically the stage disappeared as Frank was calling. Some of us attended Speewa for another fun weekend. 23 PINE CITY TWIRLERS Mount Gambier Ginni Steele Square Dancing in Mount Gambier has started off very well with lots of planning by the committee for a good year of dancing and social activities. With 9 dancers preparing to attend the National Convention in Perth, with the organising of a Dress Set and the preparation of the Caravans for 8 of the dancers. This is making the trip even more exciting and something that everyone is looking forward to attending. Dancing has been steady with the mainstream dancing on Friday Nights. An Aussie Night is our first Social Function for 2009 where we are all going to step back into the past and camp out at Jack and Shirley s for some real Aussie Tucker on the camp fire, which will include a three course Aussie Meal for those who do not want to do the trip home will be taking their tents or caravans and spending the night and will continue on the Sunday with a real Aussie Breaky around the camp fire. Monday 25th May Brian Hotchkies will be joining us for a night of Dancing. A sausage sizzle is being organised for those who are travelling from Naracoorte or any visitors who are passing through Mt Gambier. All visitors are welcome to join us. Please contact Margie on or after 6pm if any visitors will be available for this night or any other dancing night. PINE CITY TWIRLERS Narracoorte Chris Bath & Alan Hall We trust everyone had a safe and happy Easter spent with loved ones. Congratulations to Andrea & Jeff for your 1 st birthday. Was a very enjoyable night. It was lovely to catch up with visitors from Adelaide and Victoria. Always news to catch up with and we love having guests. Our doors are open if you should find yourselves passing through please do not hesitate to make contact. We are in full swing with the final touches for our audience participation night. Our support goes to the local chaplaincy on May 9 th for a Mothers Day Dance. Hopefully the turn of cold weather wont keep everyone by the home fires. Happy Mothers Day to all Mums. Have a great day. Happy birthday to Westgate dancers, sorry we wont be there to share the occasion with you, but thinking of you in spirit. Have a great weekend. Chris & Alan Squares Around Victoria May June 200 Page 23

24 SAPPHIRE SQUARES Merimbula Caller: George Pitt Our weekend is almost upon us and we look forward to catching up with old friends again and making a few new ones. At the time of writing it is too early to report on our weekend for this issue, so it will be in the July one. Gloria is currently in Melbourne awaiting a new grandchild (hopes like mad to be back for the birthday weekend). Pam & George head overseas two weeks later and will be away most of May & June. Club will run to tapes, providing sufficient numbers, so please ring first (Margaret or John McAllister on ). Happy birthday wishes go to Mal in May and Gloria in June. After our birthday we will once again farewell Barry Lee, who will be chasing the sun in his usual manner! It has been lovely having him here for a few weeks and we wish him well. STRADBROKE SQUARES Caller: Janet Cook & ROSEDALE ROUNDS Hosts: Jan & Colin Sale Lots of good dancing in the last month - including our Easter Dance. John own the Easter eggs prize and shared them with us all. Good to see Colin back on the floor again - but he had to dance as a lady! We must be the only club around that often has men dancing as ladies - must be the country air! This time both Colin and Frank were doing it! In May our 2nd dance for the month will be in Moe instead of the woolshed - we are dancing at the retirement village there at their invitation. Hoping we can get some of them to take up square dancing or get back into it. John and Yvonne already have done so. Its nice to see Kevin and Ellen back at club. Plans underway for our Birthday in July - see advert. Rounds classes moving up into Phase 3 stuff with Cha now being taught and more advanced waltzes under way. 25 SUNNYSIDE LODGE & ROUNDS Heatherton Cuer: Ella Whyte We have had another enjoyable month of Square Dancing. Even though the cold weather is upon us and the dance nights are cooler, it s still warm and friendly inside our lovely venue. June is a quiet month and some of our dancers are busy planning their usual holidays up north in the sun. We wish them a safe and enjoyable holiday. By the time you read this the National Convention will have been and gone. We hope those who travelled to Perth had a great time and a safe journey home. Our club will be operating as usual, so if you are not going to the National why not come along and enjoy a night of fun and friendship with us at Sunnyside. SUNNYSIDE ROUNDS Heatherton Cuer: Ella Whyte Our special Afternoon Tea Dances continue on the 1 st Sunday of each month and we invite all Round dancers to come along and join with us for an enjoyable afternoon of easy level dances. Thursday club has continued workshopping Rounds for the National in Perth. For all those attending the National in Perth, we wish them safe travelling and a very happy and enjoyable Convention. It is good to see John McRae back dancing after an operation on his hand. We hope Pam Deamer recovers from her spinal aliment without having to have surgery and hope she will be back on the dance floor soon. Ah Beng always smiles during lightning storms because he thinks his picture is being taken Squares Around Victoria May June 200 Page 25

26 TOKEN SQUARES Hosts: Barry , Pam Deer Park Dave & Pauline Hi everybody; boy hasn't the weather been interesting lately.?? Melbourne sure lives up to it's reputation. Had a bit of fun during the month, for the first time our Men dancers out numbered the Girls, so we had the all Men's set again. They danced so beautifully, even the girls applauded. Wow. School holidays had Grandma bringing their Grand Kids along for a morning of entertainment...watching Grandmas' and Grandpas' enjoying themselves. Nice to have Stella and Pauline back dancing with us again. David and Pauline have en barked on one their getaways, back soon, and Don and Sandra tell us that they had a great time on their cruise. Birthday greetings to all our Birthday people. That's all for now, so remember a hearty welcome awaits you when you visit us Daylight WHITEHORSE Caller: Janice Alexander Nunuwading The weather certainly changed in a hurry, but the heaters work well. It was great to see Kath along and to see Lyn dance for the first time in over 12 months! Heike is back after a nice holiday, and Dieter and Elisabeth head off to Fiji for theirs. We hope Elisabeth's arm is better soon and Christine appears to be on the mend as well. It was nice for Greig and Carmel to drop in before they head off as well. We also had a visit form Ken Lazarus - it has been a busy month! Hopefully we all stay well over winter. 28 Adrian & Mirribelle Brown & Family I knew Mirrabelle and Brielle from the New Horizons Playgroup which Mirrabelle ran and organised so well, she always had a craft going for the kids and sat down and taught them how to do it... I remember the time she sat down and made scones with the kids, I thought she was so keen, the kids really enjoyed it. She welcomed our Mothers Group in, and made it such a nice place for us to get together and enjoy the children playing. We really miss her and Brielle and will never forget her kindness and smiling happy face, she was always so happy. Brielle was such a confident little girl, and Mirrabelle said it was because she had two older brothers so she had to stand up for herself, she became very fond of the new babies that were born late last year and always wanted a cuddle. We all really miss them both, and are devastated for the loss of the family. Our sincere condolences to their family and friends.
