3 V.S.D.A. President's Report Hi All, Hope you all enjoyed the extra edition of the Sav. As you know, it was printed a different way due to our normal printer being on holidays over the Christmas period. The VSDA will be holding their first meeting early February to commence the new year with some new ideas and plans for you all in Square Dancing. The Bunnings BBQs are continuing with the plan to spread the word about Square Dancing is still alive and well, we have plans for more so keep an eye out- we may require your help either cooking or Dancing. The State Convention is fast approaching. We now have session tickets for trial for Horsham so we will see how they go - as to whether to continue them for future conventions. The AGM will be held in Horsham so if you would like to be part of the Committee please complete a nomination form. It is also great to see a new advertiser in the sav advertising Cruisin' Country. Leanne is a dancer from NSW and has her own travel agency, and she can also book your next holiday - just give her a ring. Not a lot more to report now but enjoy dancing. Mark Kelly President VSDA Do you know a member who could be cheered up or encouraged by receiving an appropriate card? If so, please contact the V.S.D.A. Friendship Officer, Mary Beerens, on (03) via friendship@vsda.org.au Squares Around Victoria - February

15 KINTYRE DANCE CLUB Nunawading, Vic 3131 Club News Cuer: Carol Simondson KINTYRE will have recommenced dancing for the year 2018 by the time you are reading this. Welcome to the new dancers and welcome back to those who shared the love of round dancing in I plan again on introducing some of the new and interesting dances that have just been released together with some of the favourites the dancers enjoy. If I can answer any questions please give me a call CAS MIKE'S PLUS Caller: Mike Davey Glen Waverley, Vic 3150 Our first night back and the temperature was in the high 30's all day. Lorraine and Mike went armed with card games, on the assumption that no one would be crazy enough to want to dance in an un-airconditioned hall for two hours! How wrong we were! Soon the dancers were rolling in and we ended up with two squares for the night. Not a bad start to the year! Many thanks to our dancers for joining us for the night. We are starting a new Plus beginners' class on Thursday nights from 7pm at our Bogong Avenue Hall, so please contact Mike if you want to join us to learn or improve your Plus skills. Congratulations to Mike and Howard for a fantastic night of Plus on Saturday. They work so well together and created such a great atmosphere that no one wanted to go home. MORNING TON PENISULA SID Mornington Peninsula, Vic Caller: Jaden Frigo Our Christmas dances were all successful, nothing better than a night of festive songs followed by supper! Good crowds at all with our Peninsula dancers all supporting the other groups. Sadly we saw very few visitors from outside the clubs this year. We have now resumed for 2018 and once again enjoying some great dancing. New learners start in February so looking forward to another class of at least hopefully! We have a number of special dances happening early in the year - hop onto our website ( for more information. Our next major weekend is our Australiana Spectacular in April (see ad in previous editions). Registrations are well down at this stage - very, very few Victorians (outside of our clubs) registered yet. If weekend registrations don't pick up then we'll no longer be able to offer special weekends. Be sure to register ASAP! Squares Around Victoria - February

16 Club News PHILIP ISLAND SQUARES Caller: Graham Jameson Our club starts dancing again on 8 th February but many of our dancers plus callers gathered in early January to attend a memorial service for Stuart Farmer who passed away just before Christmas. Stuart and Joan were valued members of Island 8's for many years and then Phillip Island Squares until they retired from dancing a few years ago. Our condolences to Joan and her family. If you're having a summer break on Phillip Island you'd be very welcome to come and dance with us. CC PINE CITY TWIRLERS Mount Gambier, SA 5290 Contact: Heather Telford January has been a quiet month for the club. The only dancing was a wellreceived demonstration dance at the local farmers market. Two social events were attended by about 20 members at each. One was a dinner at a local hotel and a BBQ / Fishing afternoon at Donovan's. David Thomas had everyone excited when he hooked on to a good mulloway but turned out to be just under size. During the month, we were all saddened to hear of the death of the father of one of our members and the death of a brother of another member. Dancing starts in earnest in the 2 nd of February. We are hoping that the work we have done will attract some new members to start off in the basic classes. As, in the case of previous years, there will be no cost for the dancing for the first month or so. SOUTHERN CROSS PLUS & A Albert Park, Vic 3206 Caller: Howard Cockburn Although we did not reopen until February, in January a number of dancers enjoyed some special events including the final Dosados and Two Steps. Congratulations to Pat and Mike who ran this event for 25 years. The Evening of Plus with Mike & Howard was also well attended and was a great night and a perfect way to start off the year of Plus. Can you believe that on 1 st March SCA will celebrate its 20 th birthday. If you are an Ai dancer we would love to welcome you along to help us celebrate this milestone. Cheerio till next time. 14 Squares Around Victoria - February 2018

19 Club News SPINNING WHEEL DANCE GROUP Cuer: Carol Simondson Wyndham Vale, Vic 3024 SPINNING WHEEL commences 2018 with a seven week program of various rhythms commencing on 13 th February. We look forward to again sharing some fun and laughter as we dance away the afternoon. Please call Carol for details and remember - YOU are welcome. CAS STRADBROKESQUARES & ROSEDALE ROUNDS Rosedale, Vic 3847 Contact: Suzie & John Caller: Janet Cook We have had a great start for Both January dances have been well attended and lots of fun. IT was lovely to have Jayden join us for the first dance of the year. Nice to see Michael back on the floor dancing again and not forgotten anything (despite his expectations). Colin still dancing but with his hand in a support strap. Also Susie on the mend after her operation. Hexagons dancing is progressing well and we are adding more movements to our repertoire. Each move starts a little confusing but we are getting a lot better at quickly picking them up and the joy when it all works is so good to see. Several of the ladies picked up some skirts, tops and petticoats that were brought to the club by Wally and Colleen on behalf of a past member. I am sure some of the ladies wardrobes must be getting full! Currently we are working on a theme for our birthday in July but for now it remains a secret. Our first dance in Feb will be a special Valentines theme - so wear red and white! SUNNYSIDE LODGE Heatherton, Vic 3202 Cuer: Ella Whyte We welcomed in the new year on New Year's Day with a special day of indoor games. The curling competition was most entertaining and the men triumphed in the end. The indoor bowls was well received. It was friendly social day with a lovely lunch shared by all. Our 61 st Birthday is coming up in February (see advertisement in this magazine). We welcome callers, cuers and dancers to join us on this special night. Squares Around Victoria - February
