1 Sam Rayburn Independent School District December-January The Rebel Review School News After 18 years of service, it is with mixed emotions that I formally announce my resignation. Today, January 21, is my last day to serve as Superintendent of Sam Rayburn ISD, so this will be my last newsletter article and blog. I d like to share a few thoughts with you to mark this occasion. It has been an honor to serve as your superintendent, and I want to thank each and every one of you that has worked alongside me to provide Sam Rayburn ISD students with the best education possible. I have been blessed to work with such great students and staff, and the most committed, passionate, and caring individuals in the field of education. Words cannot express my gratitude for your unwavering support of me during my tenure here at SRISD. I wish to express my appreciation to the board of trustees, both past and present, for providing me the opportunity of a lifetime. I will forever be grateful for your confidence in me to serve as superintendent. The time has come to begin the next chapter in my life. I thank God for my family and all my many blessings. The students, staff, and community of Sam Rayburn ISD will always be in my prayers and I wish each of you the very best. With that, I say goodbye and God bless you. Jeff Irvin, Superintendent Sam Rayburn ISD Updated Sign Coming Soon! The school board recently approved the purchase of a new electronic sign to replace our existing information board located in front of the school. The new sign will be much easier to update and will allow for more information to be displayed than our current method. The sign will stand 19 feet tall and will be placed beside the front fence in the center of the entrance and exit drives. The digital display area will be five feet and nine inches tall, and ten feet wide. The display will be in color and the pixels (image elements) should be clear enough to read if you are traveling by at 55mph or less. The updated sign has been ordered and is scheduled to be in place by the end of March.

4 Holiday Spirit Sam Rayburn Elementary UIL Page 4 The Elementary academic competitions were held on Monday, December 7th at Celeste Elementary School. This is the first time in almost two decades that Sam Rayburn has not hosted UIL and the first time the 6th grade students were not included in the Elementary competition (6th grade competed as junior high). On Thursday, December 17th, the sixth grade class made its annual trip to the Bonham Nursing Home to sing carols to the residents. After singing a few songs, the sixth graders passed out gifts. Many students traveled the hallways to ensure that residents who were bedridden received a gift. The students did such a great job, Principal Shaw treated the class to ice cream at Braum s on the way back to school. During each UIL contest, our students competed against other students from Bells, Bland, Blue Ridge, Celeste, Honey Grove, Trenton, and Wolfe City. The following students earned a place at this year s UIL competitions: 2nd Chess: Derrick Wiley 4th 3rd Chess: Cade Nichols 2nd, Case Nichols 5th; Team: 2nd - Cade Nichols, Case Nichols, and Drew Taylor 4th Chess: Beau Bromley -4th; Team: tied for 3rd place -Beau Bromley, Grant Graham, and Abbie Keeton 5th Dictionary: Eli Mosley tied for 3nd; Team: 2nd - Eli Mosley, Drew Dickey, and Alex Chesser 5th Oral Reading: Riker Stewart -3rd 5th Social Studies: Maverick Walker tied for 2nd; Team: 2nd - Mavrick Walker, Alex Medina, and Billy Goode 4th Spelling: Beau Bromley -5th; Team: - 3rd Beau Bromley, Tucker Gibbs, Makayla Idell 5th Spelling: Tanya Thomison -5th 2nd Storytelling: Manuel Medina -1st and Sharon Goode -3rd 3rd Storytelling: Charlie Thomas -3rd Continuing the Tradition Senior Abbie Dow recently signed a letter of intent to play softball for Southern Arkansas University. Abbie s mom, Rebecca, played softball at Missouri State. Her older sister, Maddie, signed with SAU when she was a senior and has been playing softball there for three years. Abbie is excited to continue her softball career while seeking a degree in Business. She also looks forward to being reunited on the field with her sister next fall.

5 December January Page 5 Cheerleaders Compete at UIL Competition This year, the Universal Interscholastic League (UIL) approved a pilot program for cheerleading competition. This means that cheerleading squads are now able to compete for State awards. On January 14, 2016, the Sam Rayburn Varsity Cheerleaders competed in the first ever UIL State Spirit Championships. The tiny squad of six cheered their way to finals that afternoon where they received the rank of 18th in state! Beta Students Attend State Convention The Beta Club is a student honor society based on high academic achievement, excellent character, and good citizenship. Beta members have the opportunity to attend the state convention which varies by location each year. This year, 42 students attended the annual Beta Convention in downtown Dallas, January 8th - 10th. At the convention, students attended meetings, elected state Beta representatives, watched skit performances and a talent show, as well as competed in a variety of activities such as art, writing, math, and poetry. Kaytlyn Abbott and Emma Carruth advanced in the art competition; Kaytlyn earned second with her photograph and Emma earned third with her sculpture. These two students will be attending the National Beta Convention in New Orleans in June to compete against other Beta students from across the United States. Playground Progress The lower elementary playground (partially funded by a Lowe s Home Improvement grant) is midway through completion. Weather permitting, the construction will be finalized at the end of January. The finished play area will have two climbing igloos, two animal rockers, a set of swings, a climbing wall, a net-climber, a sandbox, and a play structure that contains a crawl tunnel and slide. The PreK 1st grade students are anxiously awaiting the playground completion.

6 Valentine s Day Orders Valentine s Day is just around the corner! The Beta Club will once again be selling items to be delivered during the school day. Order slips will be sent home with students starting the first week of February. Extra slips will be placed at the Elementary and High School offices as well. Support your SRISD Beta club by ordering a valentine for your loved ones. Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute Seniors who are planning to attend college should be seeking out and completing applications for scholarships. Along with basic information, many scholarships have additional requirements for an application to be accepted. Below are few resources to get started with: Upcoming Scholarship Deadlines Glaser Family Charitable Foundation- Feb. 28 th Dixie League- Feb. 1 st Scholarship websites: Locate the counselor s page through the school website. From there, click on links from the left-side menu to see a list of scholarship opportunities. Hands-On Vocational Class Off to a Great Start Sam Rayburn s bus mechanic, Paul Wallace, is in his third year at Sam Rayburn. After students showed interest in learning auto mechanic skills, Mr. Wallace earned a certificate to begin teaching a Shop class. Currently, he teaches one small class, which is only offered to Juniors and Seniors. Amazingly, these students have already built three motors, as well as practiced basic skills of tire/wheel changing, brake work, oil changing, and other small maintenance checks. The motors they built have been placed in project vehicles that the students continually work on. One of the vehicles, an S10 truck, was entered into a race in which the class was allowed to observe. Mr. Wallace is excited about the students interest in learning and hopes to introduce paint and body instruction within the next few months. For information and resources, visit our webpage:
