1 September 2016 Message from Mr. Terry Kathol, Principal Monthly Prayer May God give you... For every storm, a rainbow, For every tear, a smile, Fore every care, a promise, And a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, A faithful friend to share, For every sigh, a sweet song, And an answer for each prayer, Amen. Welcome Back! We welcome everyone back for the school year. We have a full three weeks of school behind us already. The students and staff have settled into the routines of this school year and there is a great deal of learning activity taking place. We welcome the seventh grade class to Cedar Catholic as well as the new students in other classes. We are excited about the impact Cedar Catholic will have on their lives. This past summer we completed the renovation project we have been working on over the past four years. This final phase of the project has had a tremendous impact on the look and feel of our school building. New flooring, doors, and lockers were installed and the restrooms were updated. To celebrate the completion of the project and give people the opportunity to show the school to the community Cedar Catholic in cooperation with the Cedar Catholic Alumni Association and Cedar Catholic School Board will be hosting a tail -gate breakfast on Sunday, September 11. Please join us for the breakfast and take the opportunity to see the renovation work that has been done at the school. Looking forward to seeing you on the 11th. This year marks the 10th truck raffle at Cedar Catholic. This raffle is made possible through a generous donation of a Ford F-150 truck. The proceeds from the raffle are used to pay renovation costs to Cedar Catholic. We are very fortunate to have the generous donation of this truck for the past ten years. Tickets for the raffle are only $100 and can be purchased at the Cedar Development office. The winner of the Truck Raffle will take place at halftime of the Homecoming game on September 30. Our Fall Activities season is underway. The Volleyball Team, Girls Golf Team, Football Team and Cross Country Runners have already had competitions. The hard work put in by these individuals and teams is evident. We wish them the best of luck as they continue through their seasons. This year we are providing live web streaming of most home events. This live broadcast of our games is made possible through Hartelco. The link to the video feed can be accessed through the Cedar Catholic website. This year Cedar Catholic has begun a new Campus Ministry program. This program is made up of the Cedar Catholic students led by a Campus Ministry Leadership team. This leadership team, along with their advisors, Fr. Keiter, Mrs. Christensen and Mr. Bengston will plan and organize opportunities through the school year inviting our students to grow in their faith. The leadership team will also help with the class retreats. We are looking forward to the positive impact the Campus Ministry will have on the faith development of our students. Cedar Catholic Jr. Sr. High School s Mission is to serve God by providing a challenging academic education integrated with Catholic values and morals developing our students spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and socially.
2 Page 2 Russ Hochstein Presents Golden Football Students started the first day of school with a very inspiring message from the former NFL player and Cedar alumni Russ Hochstein. After Mass, Russ Hochstein presented a Golden football to Cedar Catholic High School and Holy Trinity Elementary School. A Golden football is a football given to high schools with a graduate that participated in a Super Bowl. This was in honor of the NFL s 50 th Super Bowl as part of its High School Honor Roll program. While Hochstein was in the NFL he was fortunate enough to play on two winning Super Bowl teams. He was very proud of what he did in the NFL because he felt like he owed something to Hartington. Russ Hochstein, a former Cornhusker and New England Patriot, told the students about the impact Hartington had on him, making him the person he is today. Hochstein, who is now married and has three children, stressed the importance of faith, community and school. He also informed the students on how they should appreciate how much their family and school do for them. Junior, Mallorie Steffen Accepting the football from Russ are the senior class officers and athletic directors. Students Receive Important Message from Father Loseke This year the Booster Club Kick-Off had a very special guest, well really he was hardly a guest at all. Instead of a famous coach or athlete, our very own Father Loseke came back to speak to the students about what it means to be a part of an activity. Father told the students the story of his career in high school speech. If you know Father Loseke, you d think he was a natural from the start. He actually started off very unsuccessfully. He then went on to tell the students about what he did to become a more successful speaker, along with what it means to be a good teammate. One of his key points was that it is important to love whatever activity one chooses to do. He told them to do what they love to do, not what others think they should do. The students learned a lot from his talk and will hopefully carry out his message in all their sports and activities. It was great to have Father Loseke back so we could learn something very helpful and be inspired as we take on the school year. Junior, Anna Reifenrath
3 Senior s Final Year Begins with Retreat Page 3 It was the first Monday of the school year, and all the seniors were not thrilled to be at school by 6:15a.m. Blankets and headphones seemed to be the common items on the bus. However, it wasn t long until the mood was full of energy and excitement about the day to come. The day was filled with overcoming fears, sorting through differences, and enjoying the time together. As soon as the bus arrived at the Timberlake Ranch Camp and was unloaded, Fr. Keiter began a group discussion, ending with the proposed challenge of intermingling between the guys and the girls. One activity included the students stating three different things that no one knew about them. As you can imagine, after six years with the same class this was a bit challenging and some ended up with a false third statement, such as Ashley Heine s I have a sixth toe. Following a morning filled with discussion, was an afternoon filled with challenges. The top attraction, the telephone pole, was climbed by a large portion of the senior class. Brandy Wiebelhaus recalled, It was challenging getting the nerve to climb the pole, but afterwards I felt very accomplished. Other challenging and fun activities were the Quads, which consisted of a small highline rope course and The Blob. Brooklynn Noecker explained, Though there was supposed to be only a fifty pound weight difference, Carter and I decided to double the weight limit, which resulted in flying twenty feet in the air. After a day that was filled with growth and challenges, the bus was reloaded and the seniors were about as tired as they were at 6:15 in the morning. However, there was a new excitement among the class, as they looked forward to their final year at Cedar Catholic. Meet the Teachers For the school year, Cedar Catholic has welcomed three new teachers to the faculty. Replacing Mr. Drew Stone in the Science department is Mr. Lowell Brown, with a Bachelors in Secondary Science and Biology. He will be teaching Anatomy and Physiology, Environmental Science, Physics, and Biology. When asked what drew him to Cedar, he said, The Christian based education at a strong school where learning in a faith based environment is paramount, and is looking forward to Watching the growth and learning of students as they prepare for the life God has given them. In the English department, Mr. Bradley Hegeman will be replacing Mrs. Pam Fallon. Mr. Hegeman started his teaching career at North American Martyrs Catholic School and continued at Scribner-Snyder Community Schools. He is looking forward to teaching back at a Catholic school as well as getting to know the students, faculty, and community, while continuing to teach, learn, and grow in his own Catholic faith. Mr. Hegeman will be teaching English II, English IV, Advanced Speech, College English, and Advanced Composition. Mrs. Martha Meier from Coleridge, NE has also joined the CCHS staff, replacing Ms. Brenda Thoene in the Spanish department. With a Bachelors degree and endorsement in Spanish and Business, she will be teaching Spanish I, II, III, and IV. The idea of working as a full time teacher and in a religious environment drew Mrs. Meier to Cedar and she says she is looking forward to performing in a different environment.
4 New and Improved Cedar Fifty-two years and ten vehicle raffles later, the much needed renovation of the Cedar Catholic building is completed as of this summer! The old heating and electrical systems were removed and replaced with new systems. Central air conditioning was added. New ceilings, all new doors, light fixtures, new lockers, floor covering, office and bathrooms were updated and classrooms painted. Renovation was conducted for four summers. The students, faculty and staff are appreciating the uniform heating and cooling and all the building updates. Nine vehicle raffles have netted over $861,000 and additional $219,760 in gifts and loan have funded the project costs so far. A fundraising campaign will be kicked off soon to raise money to complete project costs (pay off the loan) and some additional school needs. Thank you to vehicle donors for their tremendous generosity of 10 vehicles, those who have purchased tickets and made gifts to fund the project. Cedar Cheer Represents at Camp! The Cedar Catholic Cheer Squad consisting of members Ashley Pick, Allison Loecker, Addie Lenning, Sydney Becker, Malaya Heine, Brianna Miller, Lexie Heine, and Abbie Steffen attended the UCA Cheer Camp at Wayne State College. The camp started on July 15th and continued through July 17th. At the camp the squad participated in Game Day Cheer, Extreme Dance Routine, and Stunting. As a team they received 12 ribbons, 4 champion Game Day trophies and one Supreme overall trophy. Junior and first year member Sydney Becker received the All-American award. Being an All-American is one of the highest awards an individual can achieve in cheerleading. Each summer at UCA, UDA, NCA, NDA, and USA camps, thousands of cheerleaders and dancers try out for the All-American title, but only 10 percent are chosen! Way to go girls!
