Bartow, FL Office Fax christophersholc@ufl.edu The Scoop V O L U M E I I I I S S U E I I National 4-H Dairy Conference N O V E M B E R In September, a group of youth traveled to Madison, WI to participate in the 56th Annual National 4-H Dairy Conference hosted at the University of Wisconsin. Trent Johnson (Hillsborough County), Glenn Snowberger (Lake County) and Pamela Mayo (Hillsborough County) represented Florida, accompanied by Timothy Best as chaperone. The group had a wonderful time and had the opportunity to participate in many memorable events throughout the week. One of the many highlights, was the day filled of tours to Hoards Dairy Farm, Hoards Magazine, National Dairy Shrine, and Nasco Farm & Ranch. These individuals also had many opportunities to meet youth involved in the dairy industry from all parts of the country and attended many educational seminars. From there, the group had the chance to tour many farms in the Madison, WI vicinity including the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Campus. And then who can forget the chance to tour the main event of the week...the World Dairy Expo! The National 4-H Dairy Conference is an annual events which allows youth involved in the 4-H dairy project to congregate. Participants learn about production, processing, marketing and use of dairy products, and develop a broader understanding of dairy careers. To attend, participants must have been involved in the 4-H dairy project for at least three years, be in 10-12th grade during the conference, Pictured above: Trent Johnson, Glenn Snowberger, & Pamela Mayo in front of the World Globe at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. and not be exhibiting cattle or participating at the National Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo during the current year of the conference. Congratulations again to Trent, Glenn & Pamela for representing the State Dairy Program at this year s National 4-H Dairy Conference Bartow Fall Classic Jackpot Heifer Show The first-ever 2010 Bartow Fall Classic Jackpot Heifer Show and Workshop will take place November 20-21, 2010 at the Bartow County Agricultural Center (UF/IFAS Polk County Extension Center) in Bartow, FL. Deadline for entries is November 12, 2010 and open to youth ages 8-18 in good standing with 4-H or FFA. Saturday, Nov. 20th we will hold the state clipping and fitting workshop, followed by the Heifer Show. Sunday, Nov. 21st the showmanship workshop and Showmanship Contests will be held. 2 1 st Annual 2011 Florida Junior All-Breeds Convention Registration Deadline: December 17, 2010 Welcome to the 1 st annual Florida Junior All-Breeds Convention to be held January 7-8, 2011 at the Marion County Extension Office in Ocala, Florida. The weekend will be filled with many competitions and events to benefit and recognize our Florida Youth Dairy Program. I will be responsible for any damage caused resulting from my behavior. Know that harassment of any type is illegal. 7) Help others have a pleasant experience by making every attempt to include all participants in activities. 8) Be in the assigned program area. If I am unable to attend, I will tell the adult in charge. 9) Dress appropriately for each event. 10) Not use a cell phone during any scheduled events. I understand that abuse of this could lead to loss of cell phone privileges or confiscation of my phone. PARTICIPANT: I have read the Florida Junior All-Breeds Events Code of Conduct above and agree to live up to the expectations. I realize my failure to do so could result in a loss of privileges during the event and/or in the future. The National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest was held at the North American Livestock Expo in Louisville, KY on November 6, Representing the Florida 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl team was Holly Whetsell (Hillsborough County), Fallon Curren (Okeechobee County) and Austin Pluskot (Okeechobee County). The team placed 5th team overall (Honorable Mention). This is a great accomplishment for a three-person team to place so high as they were penalized for not having a 4th team member. Thank you to Kim Pluskot for chaperoning and volunteering your time. If you are interested in representing Florida next year on the State Quiz Bowl Team, make sure you study ALL YEAR long! 5 V O L U M E I I I I S S U E I I P A G E 5 Florida 4-H Dairy Judging Program NATIONAL 4-H DAIRY JUDGING CONTEST The National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest was held September 27, 2010 at the Word Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. The Florida 4-H Dairy Judging Team was well represented by team members Holly Whetsell (Hillsborough County), Fallon Curren (Okeechobee County) and Mariah Shelton (Lake County). The team first traveled to Maryland during Labor Day Weekend to practice for preparation for the National Contest with Debbie Clements and Chris Holcomb. Once in Madison, the team participated at the practices on Saturday and Sunday before the contests and prepared for their last 4-H Dairy Judging event. Thank you to Gene Holcomb & Debbie Clements for accompanying the team with myself. After the contest, the team was able to enjoy some of the National Dairy Shows and tour the World Dairy Expo. The team did extremely well and represented our state team with pride! Please help me congratulate the Madison dairy judging team. They placed: 7th Overall Team 6th Team in Reasons. (Only 3 points out of 5th overall) Guernsey Breed 5th Overall Team Holstein Breed 5th Overall Team Fallon Current - 9th Individual Overall, 12th Individual Reasons, 2nd in Jersey, 5th in Brown Swiss, and 8th in Holstein. Holly Whetsell - 24th Individual Overall Mariah Shelton 29th Individual Overall The Florida 4-H dairy Judging Team practiced at the regional judging practice in Maryland (picture above) to prepare for the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. ALABAMA STATE FAIR 4-H JUDGING CONTEST On October 11, 2010, the Florida 4-H dairy Judging Team, consisting of Trent Johnson (Hillsborough County), Cassidy Delong (Manatee County) and Jessica Turgeon (Okeechobee County) traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to the Alabama National Fair to compete in the Youth Dairy Judging Contest. Cassidy Delong placed 1st high individual and Trent Johnson placed 2nd high individual, and the team placed 1st high team overall. In reasons, Cassidy Delong placed 1st high individual, Trent Johnson placed 2nd high individual and Jessica Turgeon placed 3rd high individual, with the team placing 1st in Team Reasons. Congratulations to these youth for their accomplishments!!
6 Florida 4-H Dairy Judging Program (cont ) NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK EXPO 4-H DAIRY JUDGING CONTEST The first week of November, the Florida 4-H Dairy Judging Team made up of Pamela Mayo (Hillsborough County), Shiloh Anuez (Okeechobee County), Glenn Snowberger (Lake County) and Trent Johnson (Hillsborough County), traveled with coaches Gene Holcomb & Debbie Clements to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY to compete at the Youth Dairy Judging Contest. The team had the opportunity to stop and practice at farms in Georgia and Kentucky to prepare for the contest. The team placed very well and should be very proud of their accomplishments. Shiloh Anuez placed 9th high individual in Aryshire Breed, Glenn Snowberger placed 13th high individual in the Jersey breed, and the team placed 9th Team in Guernsey Breed. Pamela Mayo placed 8th high individual in Reasons and the team placed 6th in Team Reasons. Overall, Pamela Mayo placed 13th overall individual and Glenn Snowberger placed 21st high individual, with the team taking honors with 9th place Team Overall. These judging team individuals placed 10 classes of animals and gave 3 sets of oral reasons in the contest. After the contest, the group toured the North American International Livestock Expo and were given the opportunity to see some outstanding cattle in the showring! 7 Florida Dairy Leadership Training The 2010 Florida Dairy Leadership Training was held Aug, 20-21, 2010 at the UF/IFAS Hillsborough County Extension Office in Seffner, FL. We would like to again thank all the volunteers, FFAS advisors, and extension staff that participated that weekend. The training was a huge success and as a result, the Florida Youth Dairy Program will be implementing a few new program including the Florida Junior All-Breeds Convention, Bartow Fall Classic Jackpot Heifer Show and Workshops, and the Florida Youth Ambassador Program. We would also like to thank our wonderful speakers at the FL Dairy Volunteer Leadership Training - Georgene Bender, Gene Holcomb, Bob Simon, Chanse & Hannah Huggins! We had educational seminars about Fitting Pictured above: Volunteers participating in a and Grooming, Showmanship, Dairy Calf Nutrition, the Florida 4-H training seminar at the Florida Dairy Leadership Volunteer Chaperone Training Modules and had a planning session for Training in August 2010 events upcoming.
