2 President s Message By Mona Meryman Gone hunting in Africa will report to you in June. Luncheon, Show and Auction 2007 By Mary Lynn West, Sables Vice President Ladies, do you like to fish for big fish and be treated like royalty? I have just the place for you! North Knife Lake Lodge is located in Manitoba, Canada on a 37 mile long, 8 mile wide lake. It is the home of northern pike and huge lake trout. In addition, they offer fly outs to other lakes for arctic grayling, walleye and brook trout. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a scrumptious shore lunch where your first catch of the day is prepared over an open fire by your guide. At the end of the day you will return to the beautifully detailed lodge for a hot tub and gourmet meal where you will experience fine dining at its best. My husband and I have experienced their hospitality on two occasions and we are now making plans for a trip in July. I want to thank Webbers Lodges for their 100% donation. 3 By Elaine Vogeler, Sables AWLS Chair AMERICAN WILDERNESS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL UPDATE Listed below are the most current numbers of attendees to the American Wilderness Leadership School West for the 2006 summer sessions. Student Session 27 Teacher sessions T-1 19 June T-2 35 June T-3 34 July 6-13 T-4 33 July T-5 32 August 2-9 T-6 17 August The Maine Facility has 17 registrations and the Laurentian Environmental Center has 3. The BOW program, scheduled for June 6 11, has 33 registered and SCIF Education Director Don Brown states, We can handle twenty more Becoming An Outdoors-Woman and More (BOW) applications for the 2006 session. 4 By Sherry Maddox, Membership Chair The Division Rewards Campaign is into the second quarter of Please be sure to track the programs that your division contributes to so the correct number of stars can be added to the spreadsheet. Keep in mind a star is earned for each teacher you send to AWLS, each participant you sponsor to BOW and more, each $500 donation to the scholarships and each Safari in a Box purchase. Coming soon!!! The 2006 Current Member Campaign will role out July 1 and continue thru October 31, Again this year there will be a prize drawing for new Sables joining during the campaign and a drawing for the current member who has recruited the new member. Jenson Ringmaker and Clarks Diamond Jewelers have each donated a great jewelry piece to Sables for the prize drawings. One change to this year s campaign and that is the number of chances both the new and current member receives toward winning the prize. An explanation of the incentives will be on the campaign flyer that will be mailed toward the end of the month. So, watch you mailbox and start thinking about those potential new members. The more new members you recruit the greater your chance of winning the prize. If your division has not forwarded the 30% donation for 2005 please do so as soon as possible. 7 By Carol O Day, SIAB Co-Chair Can you believe Summer is almost here? I m still trying to finish my taxes from 2005 thank goodness for extensions! The Safari In A Box program will have many opportunities this summer. First, we have just approved 3 more Gifting Applications. The first one goes to Linda Schott in Ennis, Montana. Linda is a retired US Forestry employee and says she is especially passionate about providing youth with the proper tools to enjoy and protect wildlife. She plans to use her Box at the Jack Creek Youth Camp, in 5 or 6 local elementary and high schools, 4-H Club, and at the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Youth Seminars. Linda s closest chapter and division is the Five Valleys in Missoula so ladies and gentlemen of this chapter if you are interested in seeing her in action her phone number is , I m sure she would appreciate your input and participation. The second approved application goes to our National 4-H Shooting Sports and Mr. Johnny K., the executive director. As many of you know, Johnny K has been a strong supporter of the Sables and has attended many of our annual conventions. He plans to display and use the Box around the entire U.S.A. at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop, the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational, Youth Education Seminars (YES), and at the Media Day at the Range. I guess you could say that 4-H and Johnny K are the Safari In A Box Ambassadors. If any of the Sables or SIAB reps would like to be a part of a 4-H event, contact Johnny K at The third approval went to the Hawk Woods Nature Center and Mr. Mike Mansour, in Auburn Hills, Mi. Mike is no stranger to SCIF, Don Brown, or the Sables. He has had several projects in the past and states, Don Brown and your members in the Detroit area have always come to my aid. Mike plans to use the Box in the educational programs at the Hawk Woods Nature Center. It is my understanding that the Hawk Woods Nature Center is somewhat of a Nature Preserve surrounded by vast commercial and residential development kind of like Central Park in New York City. Mike can be reached at or by mmansour001@comcast.net. Another fantastic opportunity for the summer and the SIAB program is the AWLS attendees. As many of you know, Lori Barr will be working along with her husband, Bill at the AWLS camps all summer. She will be demonstrating and talking about the

8 Box to each camp attendee. To continue her hard work and support, the SIAB program plans to contact these teachers and administrators when they return home and work with them hand in hand to put a Box in their hands and in their classrooms! As you can see, many wonderful opportunities await the Safari In A Box program this summer. Those of you in the areas of these approved Gifting Applications, please take the time and make the effort to see how the SIAB Box is being used the contact information is there for YOU! Ladies, have a FANTASTIC summer! By Lorie Ingram, Benefit Awards Chair The SCI Sables Benefit Awards drawing was held on January 27, 2006 at World Headquarters in Tucson. The 2006 grand prize winner was Ann Woodruff of Atlanta, GA. Her prize was a oneof-a-kind, custom-made snow leopard pin/pendant created by Singleton-Moss Custom Goldsmith & Jewelry Design. The first prize winner was Michelle Deeds from Birdsboro, PA whose prize was an original oil titled Sable Portrait, created and donated by Brian Jarvi of Jarvi Studios. The second prize winner was Douglas Williams from Golden, CO who won a Custom Big Five revolver, donated by MG Arms, Inc. The third prize winner was Regina Henderson of Hattiesburg, MS. Regina was the lucky winner of a wild boar hunt for two with Alfred Luis of Central Coast Outfitters near Santa Maria, CA. The fourth prize winner was Janice Law from Lake Charles, LA, whose prize was a glazed stoneware platter titled Cape Buffalo donated by the artist, Heidi Uotila Sculptor.

9 Norbert Ullmann and his artisans at Ullmann Glass in Bavaria are busily creating the 2007 SCIF Sables crystal Christmas ornament which is the third in a series of six designs, five of which depict the African Big Five. Norbert, a dedicated SCI and SCIF Sables Life Member, is committed to creating this series of ornaments with proceeds benefiting the Sables education programs. The 2005 ornament began the series with a sable antelope, the 2006 theme is a lion and the 2007 will feature an elephant. These beautiful works of art require many months of painstaking work to create, beginning with the initial goldsmith s design of the mold that depicts the animal and moving through the intricate manufacturing process of more than twenty production steps. The 2007 ornament with an African elephant design will be introduced at the Tucson August board meeting. The 2005 and 2006 ornaments are available now at one for $45 or two for $80, plus shipping.
