1 NEWS AROUND BCHS December 2016 THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: The way to get started is to quit talking and get doing. ~Walt Disney BCHS Mission Statement Bracken County High School will prepare all students to be productive and contributing members of a 21 st century global Miscellaneous Information If a student wants to take their permit to drive, they must come to the office and get a permit paper that must be signed by the guardian/parent and a school administrator. Please do by Wednesday if you are going on a Friday. Bad grades and poor attendance can keep this from happening. Important fact: All sport participates need a physical. This includes football, volleyball, tennis,

2 track, golf, archery, cross-country, girl s basketball, boy s basketball, and cheerleading. KHSAA physicals are required and can be picked up in the office before you go to the doctor. Parents you can check on your student s grades by logging in and looking at the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus. If you are interested contact Ext Christmas Parade December 3, 2016 Light Up Brooksville. The Snow Queen and her court are expected to ride. Be there at 4:00 sharp.

The Bracken Polar Bears will be playing against the Robertson County Black Devils. Games start at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:30 pm. Hoops for Hope is hosted by the Bracken County High School FCCLA club and members Kaleigh Woods, Alicia Teegarden, Makenleigh Cooper and their adviser Lesley Duzan. Hoops for Hope will be supporting the bracken Co. Cancer Support group and The Cure Starts Now organization. The mission of this organization is to fund groundbreaking research in honor of all children battling pediatric brain cancer or children that have earned their wings as a result of pediatric

4 brain cancer. The Cure Starts Now hopes by raising awareness, it will increase the interest in knowing more about these deadly, yet unknown, cancers. The guest speaker for the event will be Lisa Hill, mother of Lauren Hill, who was an inspiring young basketball player from Mount St. Joseph University who has since died from pediatric brain cancer. Lauren captured the hearts of many people across the nation with her story in November Despite her diagnosis with DIPG, a rare inoperable brain tumor, she used her voice to speak up for the kids that are unable to speak for the need of more research funding. As a result of Lauren s efforts, $ 2.2 million has been raised for DIPG research since her first collegiate game on November 2, Along with a guest speaker and the basketball games, other events will also include a cake auction, silent auction, and a survivor s reception for all cancer survivors who sign in at the beginning of the game. Cheerleading performances will be provided by the Taylor Elementary Cheer Bears, the Bracken County Middle School, and the Bracken County High School Cheerleading teams.

6 WHAT IS HAPPENING AT 4H? 4-H Teen Council Any Bracken youth age is welcome to attend the 4H Teen Council. Tara Boling & Tricia Nesbitt will serve as leaders. If interested call the Bracken County Extension Office. 4-H Livestock: On December 12 th, 6:00-8:00 pm, we will have Dr. Alecia Raymer, DVM coming to speak to the group. On January 10 th, 6:00-8:00 pm, we will have Matt Watson as our speaker discussing nutrition. Listed below are additional hours available. Extension office meetings with contact hours must be accompanied by adult!!! 7 Governor s School for Entrepreneurs GSE exposes young aspiring entrepreneurs to the mindset, culture, innovative thinking and skills necessary to start a company. Student entrepreneurs spend significant time on design thinking and agile product development. Emphasis is placed on the triple bottom line -- caring about profitability, social equity and environmental conservation. GSE is an immersive, exploratory dive into entrepreneurship and innovation. It is a college and career ready program giving Kentucky high school students a hands-on opportunity to turn their ideas for stuff into business opportunities. GSE empowers student entrepreneurs to make a positive impact on their communities through innovation and to become business leaders of tomorrow. Additional information can be found at Governor s School for the Arts How Do I Apply? 1. Check your eligibility. Students must currently be a sophomore or junior in a Kentucky high school or home school. 2. Read the detailed Audition/Review requirements for your Art Form(s) requirements are currently available. Updated requirements coming soon! 3. Prepare your Audition or Review materials to submit. Always refer back to your art form requirements. 4. Submit the application and complete the recommendation process for the first round by January 15. The application will go live November 15. 8 BRACKEN SPORTING NEWS.. The Bracken County High School winter sports are in full swing. The Lady Bears played Bath County at home on Monday night and beat them by a score of The Lady Bears also played Nicholas County Thursday night and lost. The Polar Bears headed to Beechwood on Wednesday Night and pulled out a big win. The team was behind most of the game and down the stretch took the lead. Congratulations on a big win! The Polar Bears play Paris on Saturday evening.

16 I s Academic Team News The Academic Team is idle until the first of the year. Right now they are taking a break and before you know it they will be practicing again. Governors Cup Competition starts in January. SENIORS Have you been accepted at any colleges yet? Scholarship time is approaching. Mrs. Wright has scholarships coming available. Be sure to stay in touch with your guidance counselor.

17 Staff News Staff.. Remember that Friday s are now Spirit Days. Please come to school wearing your blue and white and show YOUR BRACKEN SPIRIT! Flower fund is in need. Each employee is asked to donate $10 at the beginning of the year. If you have not done it please do. Good news: We now have one of the Chrome Book carts available for classroom check-out. In order for the students to log into the Chrome Books, they will click onto the Log In icon which shows up in the middle of the screen. Next, on the right hand side, they will click on the Browse as Guest link, which will allow them onto the machine. Teachers will assign the students the number of the Chrome Book which they will be working on and write it down in the Chrome Book Binder which will be with the cart. There will also a sign-up sheet for each of the carts. Thanks! Club Days and Advisor/Advisee has been changed to December 7 th. Please be sure to mark this on your calendar. Talent Search Day has been changed from December 20 th to December 12 th

18 ATTENDANCE POLICY ATTENDANCE REMINDERS: We want to remind students and parents about the attendance policy for attending prom and participating in graduation ceremonies. The explanation below is from our student handbook that students receive the first day of school. Please be aware of the number of absences and/or tardies you child has. This information is available on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. If you have questions about this, please contact the school. ATTENDANCE AND GRADUATION CEREMONIES Students with fifteen (15) or more absences or tardies, or a combination of both, during their senior year will not be allowed to participate in or attend Awards Night or Graduation Ceremonies. If a student is suspended the day of, or day prior to, the graduation ceremonies, the student may not participate or attend. ATTENDANCE AND PROM Students with fifteen (15) or more absences or tardies, or a combination of both, for the school year will not be allowed to attend the prom. If a student is absent or suspended the day before the prom, the student may not participate or attend. Attendance Appeals A parent/student may request an appeal of an unexcused absence or tardy through the School Attendance Appeals Committee, consisting of the Principal/Designee, Assistant Principal/Designee, School Counselor/Designee, and the Director of Pupil Personnel. The request must be in writing to the building principal or counselor within (3) school days of the 15th absence/tardy. Once the appeals process has begun, the decision of the Attendance Appeals Committee is final. Appeals may also be made for a student who is not allowed to attend graduation/awards night ceremonies or the prom due to excessive absences/tardies. The parent/student may make the appeal to the School Attendance Appeals Committee. The request must be in writing to the building principal or counselor within (3) school days of the 15th absence/tardy. Once the appeals process has begun, the decision of the Attendance Appeals Committee is final.
