1 ODPC News & Notes May 2016 From the President & Festival Manager Introducing an exciting new volunteer incentive program. Volunteers who sign up to serve 2 shifts (4 hours total) earn this year s ODPC T-shirt, a $15.00 value! Workers are needed in several areas: gates, headquarters and stage crew. To sign up before Funfest begins, either add your name to the sign up board located in the Fairgrounds Community Bldg. or Gwyn Besner at gwyn.besner@gmail.com. Then come to ODPC Headquarters Wednesday July 13 from 6-8 pm to reserve your shirt. Supplies are limited - sign up early for the best choices! Each volunteer will be given a voucher to be initialed by an ODPC official at the completion of each shift. When your voucher has been initialed twice, bring it to ODPC Headquarters to collect your shirt as our way of saying thanks for a job well done! The ODPC Office is Moving Kathy Rayman This is a reminder that the ODPC Office will be moving from the Vendor Building to the old Habitat For Humanity building. This building is located right across from the east entrance to the Grand Stand area at the Osceola County Fairgrounds. It is centrally located and offers us so many possibilities. The building has been vacant for a few years and we are trying to utilize every space available to us. This change will also give us more room in the Vendor building. If you would like to become more involved in the workings of the Funfest, we are looking for new Gates Committee members. Gwyn Besner and Bill Beyerlein are willing to train their replacements during the 2016 festival. Please feel free to contact me at president@originaldulcimerplayers.org to let us know.

3 ODPC Festival Office News ~ Sue Crandle Last year, the ODPC Board modified how membership dues are collected. Dues are now included in the cost of admission to Funfest. The new plan spreads the cost of producing the festival equally between all festival goers, member and non-member alike, and has been well-received. Because the club is no longer dependent on membership dues to fund the festival, we can further modify some requirements we ve had in the past. Please take note of these changes. Used Instrument Sales Registered membership in the ODPC will not be required to use our Used Instrument Sales Area to sell your used items. The Used Instrument Area is located in the lower vendor barn and will be overseen by festival staff. As always, the ODPC is not responsible for items left in the Used Instrument Area. Dulcimer Drawing Registered membership in the ODPC will not be required to enter the Dulcimer Drawing this year. Please note: Everyone 18 and older who pays admission to the festival is eligible to enter the drawing. Tickets will be included with your admission ribbon, and entry boxes will be placed at gates and in ODPC headquarters. Winner must be present at the Saturday evening Stage Show. Member Renewal Registration Remember to register your membership during the festival so you continue to receive our electronic newsletters and to be eligible to vote in our elections. To register, you must bring your admission ribbon to ODPC Headquarters. Your information will be updated (for returning members) or recorded (for new members). Subscriptions for mailed newsletters are still $5.00. Folks who come to the festival late in the day, and who wish to register their memberships after office hours can pick up a Member Information card at the admission gate when they pay for admission. Fill out the card and take it to ODPC Headquarters to deposit in the after-hours box near the door Funfest Wrap-up Meeting! Campers Must Purchase Ribbons Everyone who pays for a camp site prior to the start of Funfest must purchase their festival admission ribbons at the same time camping fees are paid. Ribbons must be worn throughout the festival, July 14 17, When: Sunday July17 at 1:00 p.m. Where: Community Bldg., Osceola Fairgrounds, Evart Michigan In the board's ongoing efforts to replace ODPC's concert stage, we have asked Scott Freeman to present his findings of requirements and costs. Scott has first-hand knowledge on this subject, as he was responsible for obtaining a new stage for the Indiana Fiddlers Gathering in Scott has graciously transported this stage to Evart the past three years to help us avoid a tragedy similar to Indiana State Fair s in Because of circumstances beyond his control, Scott may not be able to lend his stage in the future. 3
4 2016 ODPC Funfest Vendors This summer, with an increase in performers and workshops leaders, we have added more spots for vendors. Along with the 4H and Upper barns, we will be using Bldg. 27 next to the Swine Barn. You ll be able to stop in and look over the merchandise between workshops. Michael C. 5 2016 ODPC Funfest Workshops Sue Crandle I ve been having a great time building this year s workshops roster, thanks to the helpfulness and encouragement of our awesome Workshop Leaders. Thank you one and all! 173 top-notch instructors will offer approximately 215 hours of classes this year, with a plethora of classes that will help build your playing skills on hammered dulcimer as well as mountain dulcimer, fiddle, banjo, guitar, ukulele, autoharp, psaltry, bodhran, mandolin and harp. There will be opportunities to learn some wonderful new tunes and get into ensemble playing, and plenty of chances to play (or sing!) in moderated jams. We will have two new workshop areas and a new Workshop Area numbering system, which we hope will be less confusing, especially with the help of a revamped map of the fairgrounds to be included in the workshops program. Watch for our new Interactive Mobile App, which will accompany the online workshops program when it s posted online in early June. I want to encourage everyone to experiment with the new Interactive schedule and class lists. With the app, you can scroll through the list of classes and have information about each workshop you re interested in right at your fingertips, saved on your tablet or smartphone. When an instructor has provided handouts ahead of time, you will also be able to find them by clicking on a link in the class description. **Everyone is invited to a demonstration of the new workshops app on Wednesday July 13 at 4:00 p.m. in the Community Bldg.** ODPC 2016 Election Reminder The Election of the ODPC Board of Directors is coming up on October 1, The executive board serves a two-year term and this is the second year of the two-year term. The President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary are all elected on even-numbered years. In order to be included on absentee ballots, anyone who wishes to run for office needs to submit their name by July 30, Although you can be a write-in candidate at the meeting, you miss the opportunity to have all the members vote for you if you miss the June 30 deadline. The duties of the Officer positions are outlined in the By-laws found on the ODPC website: Click on By-Laws and scroll to pages 4 6. Articles V and VI contain the information on the positions and their responsibilities. Please feel free to ask any questions or volunteer to run for a position by contacting me at trustees@originaldulcimerplayers.org. I will acknowledge you to ensure the system is working correctly, so look for that acknowledgement. Paula Brawdy ODPC Nominations Committee Chair 5
6 From our Tunes Meister Jim Rathbun: The two tunes featured in this month's homework are from the Randall Brother's album and are a tight pair of slip jigs. If you're looking for a wonderful set of moderately difficult tunes to learn these would make a great start. You can add these tunes to The Butterfly without a problem. 6
