1 Clan Campbell enewsletter August, 2016 THE 2016 INVERARAY HIGHLAND GAMES From Duncan Beaton: Hi David, Just back from a wonderful day at Inveraray Highland Games yesterday (Tuesday, July 19) Temperature of 84F and a big crowd. We had a visit from [Trustee] Mike Taylor and family, and Margaret [Mather] did a good deal with him for admission to the Games. I introduced him to Alison [Diamond], the new archivist (below, right), and we even paid a visit to the Archives. The Clan Campbell Society of Germany (CCSG) made their fourth appearance in a row, and even erected their US-style clan tent (but didn't share their sandwiches!) I had had enough venison pasties, prepared in the sponsor's tent by Eric, the French chef at the George, anyway, so would have passed on the schnitzel. 2 THE INVERARAY HIGHLAND GAMES The Duke and Duchess of Argyll presented a pipe banner to the Royal Regiment of Scotland during the Inveraray Highland Games at Inveraray Castle. The Senior Pipe-Major for the British Army, Martin MacDonald, received the banner on behalf of the Regiment. Following are scenes from the Games on July 21.

CAMPBELLS AT BLAIRSVILLE, GEORGIA -Art Gunter, GA Commissioner A man came by our tent at Blairsville wearing a Campbell kilt.

Upon hearing that Pat dug out a 3-XL t-shirt with the Boar's Head crest that we had not been able to sell for years and gave it to him to wear during the games.

I thusly communicated with him and emailed him a membership form. Hopefully he will fill it out and send it in although it may probably be a year before I will know if he did.

Pat and I have been involved with the Army Rangers of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment stationed at Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah volunteering at events and attending functions since 2001.

In talking to him we found out his name is Chris Chamblee and that he was going to be one of the Games participants. Upon hearing that Pat dug out a 3-XL t-shirt with the Boar's Head crest that we had not been able to sell for years and gave it to him to wear during the games. We talked to him about joining but he had to hurry down to the Games field and said he would come back by. Well, he never got the chance to but I was able to get his address. I have attached a few photos of him in action. Unfortunately I was not able to get one of him doing the caber toss, it was just too hot on the field to stand there through all that. I can't begin to tell you what a great honor this is. It is a lifetime commitment and we both look forward to our continued association with the Battalion. ABOVE from left to right, Col. The 13th annual Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games took place in Meeks Park the weekend of June Saturday turned out to be a very nice day (and Sunday just like it). The temperature was in the mid-eighties and the humidity was rather high but it was a fairly comfortable day to share our Campbell heritage with the attendees. Saturday s crowd was large. I would estimate around 3,500 people attending over both days. The Parade of Tartans was on Saturday at noon. We had 10 people to march this year. It was a tough time on the field in the hot sun with no shade but we made it through it. The children attending the games were collecting crest stampings from all the clans which kept us busy at our tent. The children had to visit each tent and ask a question pertaining to the clan while getting their paper stamped. Over both days of the event we were able to sign up 9 new members and 1 renewal.

4 GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN GAMES The 57th Annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans brings the color of hundreds of tartan plaids and the clamor of half a dozen bagpipe bands to the North Carolina High Country Thursday through Sunday, July (Above: Campbells are marching at Grandfather) The Grandfather Games are considered America s grandest Games because of the spectacular mountain setting that is so reminiscent of Scotland. The deep blue peaks of 6,000-foot Grandfather Mountain tower above a meadow ringed by 130 red, blue, yellow and green striped tents. The color is augmented by thousands of Scots decked out in their finest tartan plaids, and the energy is amplified by the sounds of bagpipes and kettledrums echoing across the moor. 5 GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN Wonderful weekend except for the "extreme" weather that passed through Friday evening causing a power outage at the Best Western Hotel where the reception was being held. Event went on with candles, etc. We set up on Friday and sold out of hats and most of the tee shirts. Had to get Beverly Myers bring up more shirts and membership forms from home. Saturday and Sunday were just as productive. Sunday was the Clan parade and Clan Campbell had 20 people marching with our flags and banner. 8 men from Clan Campbell participated in the tug-of-war and won the coveted prize of a large pewter plate. The clan team was put together by James Rust. It included: Spence Garrison (NC), James Rust (Va), James Sugenbell (NC), Lugenbell (NC), Dwayne Tenney (WV), David Connell (NC), Luke Weber (NC), Will Wall (NC), Elessar Vowell (WV) and it was coached by SC Commissioner Jeff McDermott. A carved pewter plate will be displayed at the 2017 GMHG Campbell tent. It took all of us, Sue Myers, Erin Campbell Powers, Mike Campbell and Jeff McDermott (from SC) to help sign up 12 new members and renew 5. Sue made carrying bags out of old tent tops for the new and renewing members that contained a Journal and copious information for to read, as well as the genealogy form to send on to Dr. Ruby. At right: We re going to the Scottish Games All the men and boys in my family have acquired or been given kilt beach towels of various tartans. This includes reluctant sons-in-law. A family joke began when my granddaughter Bea (then 3) first saw me in my tartan towel and inquired, Papa, are you going to the Scottish Games? (This year, now age 5, when I asked her if I were going to the Scottish games she replied Naw, you re just going to the kitchen to get a drink! ) I attach the photo of us all going to the Scottish games. (Later we dress properly for dinner with collared shirts a family tradition.)
