I would like to ask you to keep them in your prayers over the coming weeks. On a completely different note you would be aware that we have very clear expectations about students being at the College on time every morning. In this regard we are the same as all employers. Our attendance system records the names of all students that are late and after three occasions in one term the student is required to attend a Tuesday afternoon detention. We are very disappointed at the moment with the number of students who are regularly coming to school late. If your son/daughter has had to complete a detention for this reason your support in encouraging them to be here on time would be very much appreciated. God Bless Kevin Jones Page 1

4 Senior Girls Soccer It was a long journey and early start for the senior girls soccer team on a Tuesday morning, but this was nothing in comparison to the game that was ahead. The game took the team and supporters down to Sutherland which was quite the journey, but quite the laugh with compliments to Miss Bertenshaw, Mr Hegarty and Mr Bertenshaw who drove the buses. The team s past successful performances in the competition had led the girls to this final game where they were looking forward to a win against St John s Nowra. The opposition team brought forward a tough competition but this did not stop the girl s team spirit throughout the game. Both halves were played with elite tactic and skill and all girls are to be congratulated on such performance. These girls showed such passion in their game and also a special mention to Tayla Kafoa (B8) who stopped numerous goals from the opposition. The field atmosphere was tense but the girls continued to push through but were beaten by St John s in a hard fought game. Bede Polding showed such school spirit throughout the game and demonstrated their sporting strengths. Although a tough game and a loss for Bede Polding, the game was well played by all. Congratulations girls on making it so far and a special thanks to the Senior boys soccer team for such support throughout the game. The senior girls team consisted of Sabina Brown (B5), Miranda Brown (D9), Kristy Buttigieg (B8), Jade Casey (B2), Krystie Grubba (B5), Tayla Kafoa (B8), Alana Kelly (B3), Nicola Claravell (D11), Lorelle Claravell (b6), Stacey Muscat (B9), Lauren Palczewski (B13), Emily Pauna (B1), Bernadette Putland (B12), Naomi Stalenbrug (B8), Gemma Thompson (B1) and Tegan Van Rijn (B4) Madeline Caleo (11B7) Netball Gala Day Report NSWCCC On Wednesday 18th August Bede Polding College sent the junior, intermediate and senior netball teams to compete in the championship division at the NSWCCC tournament held at Jamison Park at Penrith. All three teams were strong in a very tight competition. The junior team finished in the middle at the pool, with the stand out players being Lauren Russell and Lillian Marokakis. The intermediate team had a few close games and showed an outstanding performance against Bonnyrigg The combination of Breanna Kenny, Brooke Sullivan and Caitlyn Tuckerman was a great asset to the team. The senior team had a strong squad of girls who all played well throughout the competition. They showed that they were the team to look out for only losing one game all day. This placed them in the top 4 of the state. Consistent performance was shown in all games by Sarah Heslop, Sarah Marokakis and Kaitlyn Griffin. Rachel Larnach, Ashleigh Zarlenga & Hayden Cole Page 4

5 PDSSSC Athletics Carnival Friday the 20th August saw BPC take students to the PDSSSC Carnival at Blacktown Olympic park where the many competitors displayed a variety of talents and performance. There were just over 1000 athletes from 22 schools from the Parramatta Diocese all competing in the wide range of track and field events. Throughout the day we had many entrants from our college competing in the variety of events and all giving their best. Our school obtained some successful results. There were brilliant individual efforts including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place achievements. These students include Hayden Cole 1st 100m, Brendan Sweeney 1st High Jump & John McMahon 1st Javelin. A special mention to the following students who were successful in various events, achieving numerous placings: Lauren Russell 1st Long Jump, 2nd 200m, 2nd High Jump, 3rd 100m; Hayden Martin 1st 200m, 2nd 100m & Dale McKay 1st Javelin, 2nd Discus. Thank you to our school staff members who worked to ensure all competitors were ready and to all students who showed school spirit and complete support. A big congratulations to all athletes who sported tremendous ability and strong performance. Well done. Madeline Caleo (11B7) Results: Hayden Cole 1st 100m, Hayden Martin 1st 200m, Brendan Sweeney 1st High Jump, Dale McKay 1st Javelin, John McMahon 1st Javelin, Lauren Russell 1st Long Jump, Tim Turner 1st Shot Put. 7 Public Speaking On Thursday 19th August Rhiannon Kenyon from Year 8 participated in the Regional Final of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition. This competition has students, who were picked from their respective zones, competing from all over Sydney. Rhiannon s prepared speech was based on the concept of fear. She presented a five minute speech, with minimal reference to her palm cards. She was the last speaker on the day out of 15 speakers. Her impromptu speech was based on the topic Playing the Game. She had two minutes to prepare a two to three minute speech. Unfortunately, Rhiannon did not proceed to the State Final, however she presented herself immaculately and her speaking skills were outstanding. Below, is the transcript of her speech. Barophobia the fear of gravity / Gynophobia the fear of women / Dendrophobia the fear of trees/ Hypengyophobia the fear of responsibility and Scoptophobia the fear of being seen All of these are, you guessed it, phobias. These are more commonly known as fears, dreads or anxieties. Maybe it s because I like bright colours, or even because bad things are associated with it such as crime and bad dreams. Perhaps it s my absolute dread of ghosts which provokes my phobia. But, you know what? I take comfort from the fact that everybody fears something and that I m not alone. Some of the most common fears are the fears of snakes and spiders; Arachnophobia and Ophidiophobia. Many people think that these fears cannot be avoided or that we are born with them. However, according to some recent research, this may not be the case. In 2008 a research team at the University of Queensland conducted an experiment entitled attenuation vs fear. During this study a group of volunteers were exposed to photos of snakes and spiders along with some other dangerous objects and animals. Half of these volunteers were random members of the public whilst the other half were experts who worked with snakes and spiders regularly. All of the volunteers paid more attention to the snakes and spiders, but none of those who worked with the animals showed fear. The conclusion made by this study was that while we may have been predisposed to pay attention to these animals we may not necessarily have been born to fear these creatures; this may have been a learnt habit. Yes, there are some fears which are not very easy to get over however, these fears may yet come from ignorance, the less you know about something, the more you fear. So ladies and gentlemen, if fears and phobias are indeed a learned habit, is it true to say that racism is built upon the fear that we learn from others? If we all knew more about each other would our society be one free of racism? Racial vilification is a very current problem in society today, it is shown while playing sport, in the work place and even in schools. A recent example of racial vilification is that of Tamana Tahu, an indigenous Australian rugby league player. Yes, we have all heard about the racial vilification issue between Andrew Johns and Tamana. Andrew Johns made this comment while being interviewed by ABC; Like many people, I have got a lot to learn. Again, does this suggest that racism stems from ignorance, and the fear we learn from others? From the time that the Europeans settled in Australia racism has been apparent. Both races did not completely understand one another and each took their own precautions. Governor Bourke declared the land we live on now terra nullius - in 1835 meaning land belonging to no one - because he saw the Aboriginals as uncivilised, needing help and unable to look after the land. Little did he know that these people had a very efficient way to life. These misunderstandings led to events such as the taking of Bennelong and the stolen generations as well as the killing of stockmen and various battles between the two races. These events, clearly, lead from the one problem: ignorance. If these two groups of people took the time to know each other would these horrible events have occurred? Maybe, but certainly not in as big a scale. Thalassophobia the fear of the sea / Verminophobia the fear of germs And Zoophobia the fear of animals And so I leave you with this thought: many fears come from ignorance and are learned from others. If we knew more about our phobia, would it disappear? Thank you. Page 7
