3 SADD-THE SHATTERED DREAMS PROGRAM Did you know that more than half of Texas high school seniors said they have used alcohol in the past month and that Texas leads the nation in alcohol-related traffic deaths among 15 to 20 year olds? With the 2014 prom and graduation quickly approaching, it is the goal of Hutto High School, SADD, and the community to decrease these statistics. Every day our children must make choices and decisions that could affect the rest of their lives. The Shattered Dreams Program helps students and families address the deadly consequences of underage drinking-alcohol poisoning, motor vehicle crashes, and drug abuse. On April 7th 2014, students and families will be challenged to examine the effects of underage drinking on the community. For our program to be successful, both students and parents have responsibilities that help spread the message. Outlined below are the responsibilities of parents and participants in the Shattered Dreams Program. The Mock Crash is a realistic portrayal of an alcohol-related crash for the student body. The crash will include a possible mock fatality, EMS, Med Flight, Hutto Police, and even Judge Hobbs. By planning this activity, we hope that we can increase the awareness of the consequences of underage drinking and impaired driving. Juniors and seniors will participate 5th and 6th periods on April 7th. Mock Obituary: The loss of a student affects everyone. To demonstrate this, we ask the parents to write an obituary with input from their child. This will be shown to the juniors and seniors participating in the presentation during 2nd period. This requires parental consent and participation. Your student cannot participate in this event with your signature and participation. Please look for this documentation to come home with them. PROM / Project Celebration: Statistics show that Prom-Graduation season - the months of April, May and June - is the most dangerous time for teens. One-third of the alcohol-related traffic fatalities involving teens each year occur during those months. To help keep our students safe after prom, PTSA, SADD, and the Class of 2015 are partnering to host Project Celebration this year. Students will ride the bus from The Radisson to Project Celebration. Once there, students will have the option of playing casino games, playing volleyball, basketball, and continue to dance the night away. Concessions will be available for purchase. The cost of a ticket is $25. If students purchase both Project Celebration and Prom tickets at the same time, they can get a $10 discount on prom ticket. Project Celebration will be at the: Premier Athletic Sports Complex A Toll Rd Leander, TX If you have further questions, please contact Dana Rivas. The Gown! The Shoes! The Bling! Step Into Austin Fairy Godmother Boutique and walk away feeling like a Princess! $60 for a Prom Package includes dress, shoes, all the bling, make-up, as well as tons of discounts from local Fairy Godmother sponsors on Prom specials like hair updos, tux rentals, corsage/boutonniere, photography, and so much more! See our Counselors if you need help with attending prom. They are true Fairy God-Parents! Prom is April 12 th!

4 From the Nurse: Healthy weight loss vs. unhealthy weight loss. The body must have energy (in the form of food) to function. Depending on many factors, such as age, weight, sex (M/F) and activity level, people's calorie needs vary. The amount of energy, or calories, the body uses increases as physical activity increases. A combination of physical activity and nutritious eating helps people reach and maintain a healthful weight. Fad diets are popular because they advertise quick and rapid weight loss, however, fad diets do not provide safe methods of losing weight. On a fad diet, people lose lean body mass (muscle) and water, rather than fat. Fad diets may cause fatigue and irritation, because the body is not receiving enough energy to function properly. From LSCC@ Hutto ISD Clinic: Hutto ISD clinic is here to provide medical services such as immunizations (vaccine updates), well-child examinations, and sports physicals in addition to sick visits. Please stop by the clinic located outside the main entrance on the right from 8:00am-4:30pm to learn more about the services we provide. We have new patient packets available for all staff and students attending any Hutto ISD campus. To schedule an appointment please stop by the clinic or call Between the ages of students are required to receive a Meningococcal vaccine. The state recommends a booster shot at age 16. Although the Meningococcal booster shot is not required to attend school it is a requirement to attend most college campuses. Also, as the school year rapidly comes to a close, let Lone Star Circle of Care Therapist, April Phillips help and support you through the stress of the upcoming finals, SATs, ACTs and college application process. You can get a referral from your counselor at any time. April will schedule to see you at her earliest convenience so feel free to walk in to see when she is available before or after class or call to schedule an appointment! Joy Holladay, DNP, RN, FNP Family Nurse Practitioner LSCC@ Hutto ISD Customer Service Thoughts by Brad Domitrovich, PR Zealot Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope that you had a great time off and had the opportunity to relax. For me, the best time that I had was not setting my alarm clock for 9 days! Did you know that, besides a smile, a "hello" is the simplest way we can offer customer service to someone. How many times will you say "hello" today? Believe it or not, saying "hello" is becoming a lost art. Nowadays, we tend to say "Hi", "Yo", or even "Sup". "hello" is actually one of those pay it forward words. If we want to, we can even stretch it to two words - "Hello Matt", "Hello Pam", "Hello Dave". If you look at the basic rules of hospitality and customer service, the word "hello" is at the top. Hello is customer service. The next time you pass by somebody today, remember to say hello. Say it like you mean it. Add a smile to it. I bet that the person you give a cheerful hello to will even pass it on to someone else. It may even make them smile. Isn t that what customer service is all about?

5 Love and Logic: After Starting Love and Logic, My Kids are Acting Worse! I loved my garage door. Well not so much the door itself but how I could make it go up and down without getting out of my car. Last night I pushed the remote and nothing happened. I pushed it again still stuck. Being a mature, middle-aged guy, I did what seemed the most reasonable: I whined and complained. It stayed stuck. Figuring that a good night s sleep would fix its abstinence, I tried again this morning. My once goldenretriever-like door was now a cat a Siamese cat. It ignored me again. Desperate times call for desperate measures: I yelled at it some more. Then I stomped into the house and whined to my wife. One of the greatest benefits of applying Love and Logic is that it helps us learn how to keep a tighter leash on our emotions and on our tongues. When kids see that pushing buttons no longer raises and lowers our doors, it s not uncommon for them to push even harder. When we do the right things, they often feel like the wrong things in the short term. This is doubly true when parenting strong-willed children! Wise parents stick to the plan, remembering that the most effective response to button pushing is to get stuck kinda like my garage door. Instead of giving in or arguing, they keep repeating the same loving yet dull thing: I love you too much to argue. I ve pretty much decided that arguing with my garage door remote is useless. It never gives in. If I were only as consistent with my kids as this door has been with me! In our CD Avoiding Power Struggles with Kids, by Jim Fay and Foster Cline you will get a lot of laughs as you learn to steer clear of everyday struggles. Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend. Dr. Charles Fay Check out the above link on the HHS website! It has some great resources for parents such as a monthly newsletter Working Together for Lifelong Success and other articles to help parents guide their student(s) / teen(s).
