1 EMPIRE STATE NEWS THE OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF FCRV Fall Issue 2013 BRANT S NOTES Congregation, to our Teen Queen, Keri McHale for placing 3 rd place at this years National Teen Queen Pageant. Also to all the other winners. You will find a list of them in this issue. Betty and I would like to thank Barbara & Sean McHale for stepping in and representing us at this year s campvention. One good news from the board meeting is that the Ladder (snake) game that New York put in for a National game was approved after 4 years. We should be getting the rules soon and will pass them on to the NYSA Contest chairman when we receive them. Another change was in the Teen Pageant and that was to have the Teen King Contest become part of the pageant. More information will come from the NYSA Teen Director or us as we receive them. By the time you receive your ESN, we will be back from the Northeast Regional campout. Thank you, to all New York members that were at the campout. A report will be given at the Fall State campout. Speaking of Fall State, in the summer issue of the ESN was a registration form for the state campout. It can also be found in this issue. We hope to see you there. FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to fall camping everyone! I hope you are ready to have a great time at our fall campout. Our theme should indicate what might be in store; Let s Go Nuts. We hope to provide you with some great food, hospitality, and entertainment, laced with intrigue and mystery. You will have to attend to find out about the intrigue and mystery. We are looking for volunteers to make this camp out a great success, if you are willing to put forth the effort whether it be a hospitality or games, please contact me at or smchale@twcny.rr.com. If we all work together the weekend can be great! Again I ask the membership to encourage the seeking out of new members and the use of the cadet program as a means for potential new members to see what we are about. The key to a new member is the connection between the member and their sponsor. Sean McHale NYSA President (Continued on page 2) Is your chapter affiliated with NYSA? All it takes is two dollars per family! If not, please consider doing so. Your dues entitles you to receive the ESN four times a year. Also, affiliation allows you to participate in the many programs sponsored by NYSA. 6 Have you ever traveled to a faraway place hoping that all was well along the way? Well, we did and had our dash A/C quit before we got to Binghamton. We had to run the generator and the roof A/ C the rest of the way to Amana, IA for the 2013 National Campvention. Sweat! Did we sweat We would suggest that you take a look at the new FCRV web site, and then check out the News section with the 2013 Campvention. It has just been updated with the activities conducted and the results. A very good selection of reading. Thanks to those who have so diligently put together a new format. We are working on our upcoming 2014 National Campvention selecting and getting chair persons for the various activities. If you have not volunteered for an item and can do so, please check with either us or your State Director to see what is yet unfilled. We also know that many have volunteered to HELP but not to chair and we will be generating a list of volunteers for distribution to the chairs for assistance. Here and There Along the Highway Ron and Barbara Wright, Paul Parsley, Paul and Eleanor Duggan and Kay and I went up to Essex Junction Expo in June to review some of the area for things to see and do while there next year. We met with the Expo Manager also and had discussions about the use of the facility, where we would be located, what storage we would have for shipments up to the facility prior to arrival and several other topics, too numerous to mention. Of the external things to see, we met with the captain of the Northern Lights cruise ship and toured that facility. Very, Very nice indeed. The Vermont teddy Bear Factory is in Burlington as is the Shelburne Farm and Museum. Registrations are open now and can be seen in the current Camping Today and will soon be posted on the FCRV web site. We look forward to seeing you in Vermont. The theme is Moonlight in Vermont. 8 HUDSON VALLEY DISTRICT Hudson Valley District had a celebration! On July 13, 2013 a going away party was held for Barry and Cathy Purcell at the Shongum Shockers Campground. The Shongum Shockers supplied the delicious food and also free camping. Family and friends celebrated their 35 years with NCHA/ FCRV. A certificate and plaque were presented by the Shongum Shockers president Irving Ellis. Barry and Cathy moved from Highland, New York to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and are lifetime members of FCRV. All the best wishes and hopes for a wonderful retirement go to you both on this new part of life's journey. "Make a Splash in Ct." is August 15-18, It is the Northeast Regional Campout and hosted by Connecticut Family Campers & RV'ers at Ross Hill Park Family Campground, Lisbon, Ct. Connecticut promises everyone will have a good time. Hudson Valley District's Fall Campout will be hosted by the Helderberg Hilltoppers September 20, 21, 22 at the Shongum Shockers Campground. Friday night hospitality will be provided by the Shongum Shockers. Please register with Dottie Jennings. NYSA Fall Campout is hosted by---- everyone. The theme is A Fall Affair---Go Nuts. It will be held at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds on Columbus Day Weekend, October 11-14, Register with Dottie Jennings by Sept. 15, and the registration form says "You'd be a nut to miss out on this chance to relax before winter sets in". Hudson Valley also has sad news to report. Arnold Bruno passed away Sunday, July 21, He and Cathe are Presidents of the ATC Chapter and members of FCRV since They are also active members and secretary of the New York Red Rose Retiree Chapter. George and I hope to see FCRV members at the upcoming campouts. George and Tonya Rothmann HVD District Directors FINGER LAKES DISTRICT Camping season is winding down here in the Finger Lakes but we still have our Fall District coming up and then in October our annual Recognition dinner. Our campout is being hosted by the Top of the Hill Chapter and is being held at Wilkins RV near Kanona. Date for the campout is September 6-8 and lots of activities are planned. We will return there in October for our Recognition Dinner being hosted by the Schyularks. This is always a good time, serious and silly awards are given and Ron Gascon and his group have come up with something new for entertainment. Ted and Vonda Schultz are attending NER and we look forward to hearing a report. Many in the district are planning to attend the 2014 Campvention; Linda Austin is in charge of Crafts and is ready! Just a reminder, there are still many jobs that need to be filled, hope more members will come forward. Please take a few minutes to consider signing up for one. We ve had several members hit a bump in the road this year with health issues and we wish them all a quick recovery. Roger Hubbell, Bob Collins, Mickey Martin, Joyce Symes, Janice Wheeler, Doris Bullivant, Iona Tanner, Donna Magee and Joyce Pipe are those I m aware of and all seem to be doing ok at this point. Our Top of the Hill chapter has a new project, Little Dresses for Africa and if others in the district would like to help, let me know. Also if your Chapter has a community service project you are working on, please let me know: we may have other chapters that need ideas or would like to help. With Christmas fast approaching, we need to think of others less fortunate, any ideas? So, let s get out there and enjoy the last warm days of summer before it s time to winterize! 10 Dos and Don ts of Water Conservation Do take short showers and save 5 to 7 gallons a minute. Do fill the tub halfway and save 10 to 15 gallons. Do install water-saving toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators. Place a plastic bottle filled with water in your toilet tank if you can t switch to a low-flow toilet. Don't run the water while shaving, washing your hands or brushing your teeth. Faucets use 2 to 3 gallons a minute. Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket, and don't flush it unnecessarily. Do repair leaky faucets and turn taps off tightly. A slow drip wastes 15 to 20 gallons each day. Do run the dishwasher and washing machine only when full. Save even more by using the short cycle. Do install faucet aerators. Water Saving Tips For Lawns Remove no more than 1/3 the height of the grass for any one mowing. For most cool-season lawns, a height of between 3" to 3 1/2" is considered adequate. Keeping the grass slightly higher will increase shade on the soil, encourage deeper rooting and reduce evaporation. Water thoroughly but infrequently to encourage deeper rooting, increase soil moisture reservoir and to reduce the number of weeds. 1" to 1 1/2" per week is sufficient to adequately maintain the grass. Letting the grass be "thirsty" encourages deeper rooting. To avoid over-watering, monitor precipitation amounts from rain events to adjust accordingly. Water only when necessary. If footprints remain in the grass for an extended period after walking on grass - watering is required. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation (reduces water usage up to 40%). If possible, use soak irrigation lines instead of pop-up heads. These can reduce water consumption up to 60%. If using pop-up heads, align heads to avoid paved surfaces or other non-targeted objects. Regularly check for leaks and install a rain gauge to prevent activation of system during and just after a rainfall. Fertilize only two times a year - mid April and late August. Always use a slow release organic fertilizer. Excess fertilizer applications increase water consumption. Water only every 5-7 days (if no rain). A soaking rain can extend that period up to days. Most people apply two times the amount of water needed. Tall Fescues use approximately half the amount of water per week as Bluegrasses. Tall Fescue uses about 10 gallons per square foot. Mow in the morning or early evening and not midday - to avoid burning grass. Page 10 Don't let the water run while washing dishes. Kitchen faucets use 2 to 3 gallons a minute. Filling a basin only takes 10 gallons to wash and rinse. Do use a self-closing nozzle on your hose. Don't water your sidewalk or driveway -- instead, sweep them clean. Don't overwater your lawn or plants. Water before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. (Continued on page 11)

11 Central District Congratulations to Kerri on a fine performance in the Miss FCRV Pageant in Amana, IA. She did a fine performance in all aspects. Kerri also attended conservation camp the first week of July. The spent time learning to enjoy nature as well as learning to be a good steward. We look for to seeing you all at the fall state campout at Herkimer. Please come and enjoy this last weekend before packing up for the season. Don t forget to bring a dessert to share for Saturday Night after the fabulous dinner feast! See you there! Barb McHale Central District Director (Continued from page 10) Cool-season grasses stop growing at temperatures above 90 F. Fertilizer applications will NOT restart growth. Cooler temperatures in late summer and early fall will promote growth. If possible, in larger areas, plant native warmseason grasses, wildflowers, trees and shrubs - once established (usually two years) they do not need supplemental watering or fertilizer applications. Do not water lawn on windy days (increases transpiration and evaporation rates) Mike and Carol Burns, Conservation Chairman.
