1 Newsletter Snowy Days By Sharla Jones Thank you to all the patient parents, teachers, staff and students in regards to our Snow Days recently! What an interesting conundrum to be faced with, as we serve the whole state of Oregon and not just the local population. I was so impressed with the can-do spirit of dorm staff who helped supervise the 6 stranded students who were unable to go home for the weekend, and the staff person who literally walked from home to OSD through snowdrifts to make sure these students were safe, happy and educated! The students made cherry pie from scratch and went tobogganing on cardboard boxes I think they had some fun being snowed in! Our staff is amazing. To try to coordinate school calendars all around Oregon and arrange transportation to achieve make up days is proving a near impossible feat at this point. We have 3 days of flexibility built into our calendar in general, so more than likely we will keep our calendar the way we have it published now and not be tacking on extra days in the coming months. We will let you know if that changes. Let s hope for no more snow Welcome to Our New Staff! By Sharla Jones Katie Heise she was hired as our Part-time teacher who presently works Mondays through Thursdays filling in for RJ s classes and will be our Jack-of-all-trades as we use her campuswide to fulfill a variety of roles. Her versatility is her strength and we are so happy and proud to welcome her back to OSD! Kathleen Davis she is hired as our new Language Arts teacher in HS. She will start March 17 th, coming fresh from teacher s college at RIT (she was an English major ). Robyn Brown she is our newest substitute teacher! Robyn is no stranger to our campus, serving as a teacher for parenting workshops during Family Learning Weekend, a former parent at OSD, and a teacher back in the day welcome back Robyn! Janelle Thompson she is our new dorm counselor! Janelle comes with a wealth of personal knowledge, as she grew up in a residential program herself at a deaf school, attended CSUN, and served in a variety of settings that will contribute to the dorm program greatly. We are very excited she has accepted the position and started February 10th! Sharon Thompson no relation to Janelle, Sharon will begin on February 24 th as our newest clerical worker, working the front desk! Friendly, outgoing Sharon worked at Alabama School for the Deaf in the past; she understands Page 1

2 our school and the population we serve very well. Please join me in welcoming our new staff members! Celebrating 100 th School Day By Greg Coughlan We all had a great time celebrating 100 days in school! We did sets of 10 handprints for each student and we counted 10 s in groups of different snacks and treats! Students had fun stacking up 100 blue cups! Students were creative in celebrating the 100 th day at OSD. Students created a 100-year-old portrait of themselves. WBSCC Results By Jacki Wolf OSD High School Boys and Girls Basketball teams and Cheer Squad participated in the annual WSBCC at the Washington School for the Deaf on January 29 February 1, Page 2

3 The boys played Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and the British Columbia (Canada) Provincial School for the Deaf. After a very close loss against Canada, we got a rematch and won! High scorers for those 2 games were Chris Moon (20) and Jonathan Sierra (48). The boys finished in 5 th place. Boys All Stars Isaac Sturgeon and Chris Moon, and Jonathan Sierra was our First Team All Star. OSD and Canada fights for a rebound during their rematch. Maria DeLeon scrambles to secure a 3 pointer shot winning the against Evergreen. Our Cheer Squad competed Friday Night against the Phoenix Day School and the Washington School for the Deaf. Washington took 1 st Place. Our team, Ashley Bailey, Breanna Ryder and Hunter Morelli, did a great job with their cheers and dance routine. We were VERY excited to be awarded the Cheer Sportsmanship Award and traveling banner, which is hanging in our gym. Congratulations! The girls played Phoenix Day School for the Deaf, Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB), and Evergreen High School (public school in Vancouver). We beat Evergreen in an exciting game with a 3-pt shot by Maria De Leon in the last minute. OSD high scorers for the tournament were Maria DeLeon (26) and Daniela Chavez-Carmarena (30). The girls finished in 4 th place. Girls All Stars - Brenda Sanchez, Daniela Chavez- Carmarena, and Maria DeLeon was our First Team All Star. OSD Cheer Team Breanna, Hunter, and Ashley. As always, our teams played hard, tried their best and were great representatives for OSD. AND we had a fun time! Special thanks to our coaches Matt Boyd, Junior Kargbo, Kaitlinh Alligood, and volunteer coach Jamison Campbell. We are looking forward to WSBCC next year hosted by the Utah in Salt Lake City. 4 Poetry Out Loud 2014 By Gayle Robertson I am pleased to announce that the school champion of Poetry Out Loud 2014 is Breanna Ryder of Shady Cove, Oregon! All of the competitors selected poems from a long list, translated them, memorized them and competed against 19 of their classmates. School Champion Breanna Ryder The top five performers advanced to the final round. The students then had to select another poem and learn it within the week. We normally give the students a lot of support through this difficult process, but the snow closed the school and forced the students to do a lot of the translation on their own. It was especially touching, then, to see their interpretations and ideas developed from entirely their own experience and understanding. The top 5 contestants were Rigoberto Martinez, Maria DeLeon, Hunter Morelli, Lupita Nava- Pena and Breanna Ryder. They all did an amazing job. The scores were extremely close, closer than ever before. From the five, just one champion can emerge. We also name one runner-up. This year, we had a tie for runners-up. Maria DeLeon and Lupita Nava-Pena earned the same score. One of them will replace Breanna if she is unable to compete. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition. The National Endowment of the Arts and The Poetry Foundation partnered with The Oregon Arts Commission to sponsor this event. The idea is to ignite a love of great poetry in young people and promote more poetry instruction in school. Oregon was the first state to include deaf students. OSD has been involved since 2009 and has sent one of our students to finals in Washington DC! Breanna will now advance to the Central Oregon Regional Competition on Saturday, March 8, at 11:00am in Salem. The state competition is also in Salem on Saturday, March 15 at 10:00am. We expect her to advance to the state level, and who knows? She may be on her way to an all expense paid trip to Washington DC for Nationals on April 29 and 30! We re crossing our fingers! Deaf Fiesta By Christy Camarata March 8, 9:30-4pm at Central Washington University Enjoy a day of fun and learning for Latino families with deaf and hard of hearing children. Information will be shared related to parenting and education of deaf and hard of hearing children. Fun play activities are scheduled for children. There will be an outdoor challenge course for ages 9 to 12, and a rock climbing wall and fire building activity for teens. Dress for the weather! A catered lunch will be provided. This event is free! FOSD Web Search and Shop Fundraiser By Roshi Shay Did you know that just by using the search engine you can earn money for Friends of OSD? Instead of googling it, Goodsearch it and designate FOSD as the recipient of a penny for each search. There is also an online shopping portal at Go there, pick a store to shop at online, designate FOSD as your charity and a % of whatever you spend will go to FOSD s work!
