2 I Don t Know What I Don t Know Tyson Kenny Deputy Principal As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. (Ecclesiastes 11:5) In my role as Deputy Principal, I feel blessed that I m so regularly approached, often many times a day, to offer advice or wisdom to someone who is in need of help. This person, who may be a student, parent or staff member, is typically searching for an answer to something, which they (for whatever reason) believe I might be able to assist them with. Unfortunately, and to the surprise of many I m sure, I don t necessarily have all the answers. I can recall numerous occasions sharing the old adage with people I don t know what I don t know. At times I am asked why the College hasn t done anything about a particular issue that a person might be having. For a student, it may be something along the lines of Mr Kenny, why haven t the water bubblers at the back of school been fixed? Or, for a parent, it may be along the lines of Why hasn t the school disciplined a certain student for saying something inappropriate online last night on social media?. Both of these above examples have in fact previously occurred, where these items have been raised with me over the last 12 months. At the time each of these were brought to my attention by the student and parent respectively, it was in fact the first time I was aware of either of these situations. This wasn t due to me not wishing to know about these matters, instead, I simply hadn t had the opportunity to learn of these details until they were eventually brought to my attention. An important aspect of both examples is that whilst I didn t know what I didn t know I needed to be willing to learn and listen when the opportunity did arise. Take for example at chapel, where only a few weeks ago I was discussing the many big questions people often have about life and God. At the time, whilst I did not profess to having all the answers to these important questions, I was humbled by so many people who were willing to listen that day each having the opportunity to learn and potentially use the information to inform not only the rest of their day, but potentially, even their relationship with others and God. It s okay to not know what you don t know ; however, don t be foolish to miss an opportunity to learn and consider important information when it is available to you. Whether this is sitting in the classroom learning new information about a new topic, or possibly sitting down with a grandparent who is sharing their insight about the world, or finally, perhaps it s even attending the next chapel service where an opportunity exists to learn and have a closer understanding and connection with God.

3 Parent Lounge 24 Click the play button to watch video Click the play button (left) to watch a short video detailing a few features of Parent Lounge that parents/carers/guardians will need to engage with in the coming weeks. Should you have any problems viewing the video, or questions relating to the features discussed, please contact the College office for more information. Medical Information Update It is now possible to update medical information via Parent Lounge. Updating it this way is an efficient way for you to keep your student s medical information current. In the past all students received a multipage medical form yearly before their year level camp for parents to peruse, correct and return. By doing it via Parent Lounge we are saving on a huge amount of paper and the inconvenience for you having to fill out another form. I will receive a message through this system to alert me to the fact that something has been updated and if I have any queries I can then contact you. There is also the capability to send me an from Parent Lounge while you are looking at your student s medical information if you have any questions or concerns. I would encourage all Parents/ Carers/Guardians to access Parent Lounge and to use it for updating addresses and contact details, medical information and for other things like seeing what assessments your student has due and to see the Daily Notices. 4 World s Greatest Shave Tuesday 28 March is s time to contribute to blood cancer research, which is needed urgently to find better treatments and cures, and to support families with practical and emotional support during their long and gruelling treatment, free of charge. These cancers are a very real part of life for many in our community. Students and staff have been busy planning, taking donations and signing up sponsorships. Several staff have been growing their locks and facial hair in readiness for the day. Members of the football team are preparing to take their pain thresholds to a whole new level by volunteering for leg waxing. On the day, students can opt to have their hair coloured for a small donation, pay to help wax a footballer s ankle or participate in the House Mad Hair competition. Spectators are more than welcome. Tuesday 28 March will be a great day at! What is Close the Gap? Close the Gap Equal access to healthcare is a basic human right, and in Australia, we expect it. So what if we told you that you can expect to live almost 20 years less than your next-door neighbour? You wouldn t accept it. No-one should. But in reality, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People can expect to live up to years less than non- Indigenous Australians. Working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is one of the critical success factors. With continued support from the public, we can ensure the Australian Government continues to work with Indigenous communities, recommit additional funding and invest in real partnerships. Last year, more than 150,000 people took part in 1596 separate National Close the Gap Day events across the country. The aim? To bring people together, to share information and most importantly to take meaningful action in support of achieving Indigenous health, educational and employment equality by Tuesday 28 March is s Close the Gap Day, a very important event for our community. We come together to celebrate the longest continuous culture in the world through story, dance, song, art and games, and to raise our awareness about the inequalities that exist in our country. Students are encouraged to wear House shirts and to support our fundraising efforts for Dirranbandi by purchasing the food and drink available on the day. Parents and other community members are very welcome as we kick the day off from 10am.

5 Cross Country Carnival The Interhouse Cross Country Carnival was held on Friday the 24th of March. It was great to see so many students challenge themselves and represent their House with pride. House spirit shown on the day was a standout of the carnival. Special mention to our new Year 7 students, who stepped up to confidently lead House cheers whilst the Opens ran their race. Overall points and spirit winners will be announced on assembly on Monday the 27th of March and in Live next week. Also watch out for a wrap up of the carnival in this term s quarterly magazine.

7 The final round of GBC sport saw a number of teams finish the term on a high. It was a great weekend for the younger students of the College with the Junior B Basketball, Junior A Volleyball and Junior Cricket teams all sealing victories. The First and Seconds Tennis girls didn t seem to break a sweat in their wins and the mighty Intermediate B Basketball team won their third game in four weeks. The Team of the Week is awarded to the Junior B Basketball team who have had a fantastic season, winning more games than any Year 7 side in our short GBC history. Libby Haley, Channece Jones and Danielle Charlier have been some of the standout basketballers driving this success. The Sportsperson of the Week is awarded to Year 12 Student Jess Mayne for her 6-0 Singles and 6-0 Doubles victory. Jess displays a powerful forehand and when she moves her feet is unstoppable on the back court. Well done Jess! Sport News GBC Sport Report This week the Crusaders feature in two Grand Finals against Sheldon College. The First XI cricket team lead by Sean Haley and Harry Berlin will travel to Wynnum, whilst the Junior B Tennis Team lead by Brittany Jackwitz will travel to Taylor Road, Sheldon. Congratulations to both teams on your fantastic year and all other teams who have trained hard and competed extremely well throughout the term. Your dedication to the GBC competition is greatly appreciated. GO CRUSADERS! Sportsperson of the Week Jess Mayne Mr Kale Reed Assistant Head of Sport Equestrian News Year 7 students, Kelsey Westra and Mia Pace competed on the weekend at the Wide Bay regional Interschool Equestrian Championships. Kelsey placed 2nd and 4th in dressage and Mia placed 6th in dressage, 3rd and 2nd in Show Hunter and Reserve Champion in 3 phase Showman. Congratulations girls great effort. Brooke Dougall was also out and about competing in the sport she loves the most, Eventing. Running two horses at Warwick in a tough EVA 105 class on Mount Baron and an equally Competitive EV80 class on Northern Warrior, while there wasn t a podium finish Brooke was extremely happy with the runs she had on both horses.
