1 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 16 Farewell to our Summer Interns Friday, August 4 th was the last day for our summer youth interns. A ceremony was held at City Hall to thank the youth for all of their hard work and to get feedback on the program. Parents and Supervisors were in attendance. Each summer youth intern received a certificate from Mayor, Walt Johnson and City Manager, Scott Larese. Thank you to all of our summer interns and we hope to see you again! 3 WATER RESOURCES NEWS A Gold Star Academy Summer Students Tour Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility It was a beautiful day as students and teachers from A Gold Star Academy toured the Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility last week. The tour began with an introduction by Maureen Phillips, Water Conservation & Public Outreach Manager; Matt Hixson, Water Reclamation Superintendent; and Kayla Ellis, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator B. After receiving an overview of the wastewater treatment process, students headed outside to begin their tour of the treatment areas of the facility, including a stop at the Blue Heron Wetlands. Ms. Ellis, lead twenty-seven students and teachers through the system of treatment tanks, explaining the different treatment stages. Returning to the Administration Building, students visited Environmental Laboratory Services to learn about the analyses performed there. After the physical tour was completed, students participated in a question and answer session on what they had learned about the treatment process. At the conclusion of the tour, each student received a reclaimed water activity book and reuse fuzzle.

4 POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS The Titusville Police K9 Unit held a demonstration for the staff and their children at the Brevard County Government Center North. Kids asked officers questions and had the opportunity to pet K9 s Chase and Scooby. An awesome group of home school, Park Ave Christian Academy and Coquina Elementary students stopped by Titusville Police HQ for a tour and to meet with Officer Plants.

5 Titusville Police Department Officers, Community Watch, Code Enforcement, CSI & Crossing Guards welcomed students this morning during a citywide 2017 "BACK TO SCHOOL WAVE"!!

6 Backpack, school supplies and snow cones for kids at the Back to School event at the Gibson Center. Titusville Police meet with kids and parent to celebrate the upcoming week! Detective Jessica Cabrera and Explorer Chief McBride distributed Child Identification kits to parents at the Back to School Event at River Lanes Bowling Center.

7 Titusville Police hosted a Free Kid Lunch event today at the Wild Ocean Market. Officers and Oak Park Elementary Staff handed out hotdogs and snow cones to more than 100 kids and also sent them home with a packaged meal. Officer Andrews was even treated to some police themed painted rocks from a special little visitor!

8 FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS On Wednesday, August 2nd, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services celebrated the retirement of Battalion Chief Scott Gaenicke after 30 years of service, as well as several promotions within our department. FF/PM Andrew Johnson and FF/PM Olivier Harper were promoted to the rank of Driver/Operator. Sr. Fire Inspector Mark Whorton was promoted to Fire Marshal and Inspector Brian Webber was promoted to Senior Fire Inspector. The ceremony was well attended by family, friends and personnel, echoing the support and tradition we enjoy in the fire service. We are proud to highlight these great accomplishments. Congratulations to all! Fire Chief Michael Woodward presented Battalion Chief Scott Gaenicke with the traditional Fire Dept. shadowbox. Battalion Chief Scott Gaenicke received a plaque of appreciation on behalf of the Titusville City Council and Mayor Walt Johnson. Lt. Adam Vaknin, Secretary/Treasurer of IAFF Local 2445, presented Battalion Chief Scott Gaenicke with his ceremonial axe.

9 Sr. Fire Inspector Mark Whorton was promoted to Fire Marshal and Inspector Brian Webber was promoted to Senior Fire Inspector. FF/PM Andrew Johnson and FF/PM Olivier Harper were promoted to the rank of Driver/Operator. When duty calls: On Thursday, August 10 th, Acting Battalion Chief Brook Smith took on the undaunted task of wrangling this little fella from the parking lot of the Canaveral National Seashore building parking lot on Main St. and South Washington Ave. and safely returning him to the river s edge.

10 Titusville Fire Department is excited and proud to give you a glimpse not many people see, a new fire engine in its inception at Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, Wisconsin. This week the cab began the fabrication process. Next week the cab should finish fabrication and will begin the paint process. This vehicle will replace a 2006 engine and is the first engine purchased in 10 years. We will be bringing you updates along the way as we share this exciting time for our department and the community we serve.

11 On Tuesday, August 8, Brevard Parks and Recreation Sandrift Community Center hosted their last week of summer camp. Engine 10 Lieutenant Adam Vaknin gave the campers a tour of the engine and helped them spray the fire hose. Firefighter Jermaine McKoy gave the campers a hand in sitting in the driver s seat and dressed in the bunker gear. Driver/Operator Matt Bowman assisted with the activities. Life Safety Specialist Kerri Lubeski read NFPA s Sparky the Fire Dog and engaged the campers with fire prevention questions by Sparky the hand puppet.

12 Titusville Fire and Emergency Services is proud to announce the graduation of four of our personnel from Eastern Florida State Collage's Paramedic program. Firefighters Cody Birge, Jermaine McKoy, Michael Schettino and Roman Lane all successfully completed 44 weeks of extensive emergency medical training. Chief Woodward provided the keynote speech for the evening, which included the graduation of the Summer EMT class and Paramedic class of On Monday, August 7, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services Life Safety Specialist Kerri Lubeski attended Andrew Jackson Middle School Registration day as a BPS Partners in Education. LSS Lubeski provided information and posed trivia questions to the students on firefighter careers, bike helmet safety and drug/alcohol awareness. The cheer squad assisted students and families finding their way around the school.

13 On Saturday, August 5, Titusville Fire and Emergency Services participated in River Lanes and North Brevard Macaroni Kid 2 nd Annual Back to School Bash. Truck 13 Lieutenant Tiffany Callahan, Driver/Operator Lucas Senger and Firefighter Ferrando Serrano welcomed families, gave tours of the truck and handed out junior fire helmets. Life Safety Specialist Kerri Lubeski and Space Coast Transportation and Planning Organization Bicycle/Pedestrian Education Coordinator Kim Smith distributed over 50 free bicycle helmets to children.
