1 LAPEL PIN Our art student Crismalid Lopez WON the Ventura County Mock Trial Lapel Pin Artwork competition. Crismalid Lopez artwork will be features on the 2017 Mock Trial, lapel pin and awards. She will be be presented with a plaque at the Ventura County Mock Trial Awards Ceremony on March 6, 2017.

2 MARIACHI After a difficult and disappointing field show season, the Viking Marching Band & Auxiliary is back on top for the parade season as we, along with our AWESOME NJROTC, take to the streets of our community to represent that Viking pride to the entire City of Oxnard! (...and eat some really good tamales at the Tamale Festival). I thought you might enjoy some pics of your First Place Drum Major, Jonah Tuazon, your First Place NJROTC Color Guard and Drill Teams, and your First Place High School Band & Auxiliary (beating out OHS, CIHS, and PHS with an overall score of Second place Pacifica scored an 89.8). If you LOVE your band, auxiliary, and NJROTC kids, let 'em know when you see them...and wish 'em luck at the Camarillo Christmas Parade competition next weekend (Saturday, Dec. 10:00 am along Las Posas and Carmen Drive in Camarillo).

3 SOCIAL SCIENCE Psychology Students participated in scientific method Experiments.

4 CAL POLY HHS AOED students visited Cal Poly SLO on Thursday, 12/1/16. Students got an in depth tour of campus life and the dorms, running into a former HHS AOED grad! Students also visited the aerospace, IT, and structural engineering buildings, led by some outgoing Cal Poly students.

5 HHS ALUMNI HHS Alumni Dr. Damien Pena, Vice President for Student Affairs addressed the high school counselors at the Ventura College Counselor Exchange.

6 ATHLETICS Our Hueneme boys wrestling team competed December 3rd, at Newbury Park High School. The Vikings boys went against some of the toughest teams in the state of California and Nevada. Congratulations to Brandon Zamora, who placed seventh with a 4 and 1 record, and to Zaul Diaz, who finished with a record of 3-2. On Saturday, December 3rd, Hueneme's girls wrestling team competed at Channel Islands High School for their first tournament competition of the season. The Lady Vikings got off to a fantastic start as five of our female grapplers brought home medals against some of the toughest competition in the Tri Counties. Congratulations to Janae Fernandez, first place, Jocelyn Flores, second place, Kayla McCormick, second place, Vivian Magana, third place and Angeles Reynosa, third place.

7 What s Happening! D E C E M B E R 9, 2016 World Language The World language department is excitedly waiting for our new language lab. With the new software and computers, our students can progress even faster. The ELL students will also be using the lab. Language acquisition is the name of the game. Just decide which language you want to learn or refine. In addition to learning vocabulary for our food units in French 1-4AP, our students are preparing and eating French food. The French 2 classes are preparing foods from several French speaking countries. The French 3-4AP are searching for French recipes to make for our French feast next week. The French 1 students are preparing to make Crepes. Yum, Yum (or in French Miam, Miam!) NJROTC MAKE-UP FALL 2016 PHYSICAL READINESS TEST (INVOLVES CARDIO- AEROBIC AND ISOMETRIC EXERCISES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WELL -BEING) NAVY CUSTOMS AND COURTESIES, HISTORY U.S. FLAG, AND FLAG ETTIQUETTES AND/OR PROPER DISPLAY OF US FLAG - NS1. LEADERSHIP SERIES ON PERFORMANCE EVALUATION FOR NS2, NS3, NS4. ORIENTATION FIELD TRIP TO NAVAL BASE VENTURA COUNTY POINT MUGU, OXNARD, CA, CONSIDERED AS AVIATION LAB AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE. THE CADETS ALSO ATE LUNCH AT THE BASE GALLEY.

D E C E M B E R 9, 2016 COUNSELING The counselors continue to plan for school-wide NAVIANCE classroom visits to the College and Career Center as well as Pre-Registration for the Class of Seniors applications for UC/CSU along with supporting documents have been completed. Counselors are writing letters of recommendation for seniors to apply and WIN scholarships. Freshmen records are being checked to see if there might be a reason why they are at risk of failing their courses. Referrals for 504 and/or assessment are being made. SST's have been held all week for students who are at risk of not graduating within the 4 years at HHS. MATH As Winter break quickly approaches Math 2 students at HHS can be found using tree diagrams to calculate the probability of a rat's likelihood to find the cheese after journeying through a maze... and in the next moment, learning that ancient chant which serves to help even the most mathematically uninclined students to remember their trig ratios: SOH CAH TOA... They also can be seen traveling in packs toward the Math Lab, as they are introduced and prepped for the upcoming CAASP.
