2 2 AMERICAN LEGION POST 91 OCTOBER 2011 NEWSLETTER ` Commander s Corner Post 91Commander Randy Stitch Soutiere commander@azlegion91.org FALL Post 91 Bar Hours Noon Close Mon-Sat 10AM-Close Sunday September has been a very busy month. We have made progress on getting the meeting room in shape (Thanks Jerry); the planning for Octoberfest (Great Job Pat and crew); September 11 th memorial; Not So Bingo is fully up and running; the Honor Guard is forming up nicely; the broaster is fully installed and the Saucy Chicks are cooking up some great Broasteresque chicken; the building committee is ready to find out what type of financing we are going to be able to get; and we had a great appreciation party for Gary Pelkey for bar manager appreciation night. Thanks to all for making all these things happen. Without all your support, they would not have been as successful as they were. October is looking even busier, so please come out and support the Post functions and have a great time. While you are at it, please bring down some friends and family. We are continually looking for new members to grow the Post. We not only need the input of new ideas, but we also need members who will engage and volunteer to help and organize the functions and all that we do at the Post. And speaking of membership, please renew your memberships for the 2012 year. The State has set some ambitious goals for us this year to reach 100%, so please get your dues to Gary and try to bring in some new members. It would be great to achieve 100% by the end of November. It would make for a great celebration at the Early Bird Dinner this year. Thank you again for all your support and participation. You are all making Post 91 a great place to be a part of. You make it fun, and we continue to do great things for our Veterans and Veteran organizations. Yours in service, Stitch Auxiliary Announcements Unit 91 Auxiliary 1 st Vice Gina Soutiere Gina.Soutiere@att.net SUNDAY FUNDAY SHIRTS! Order your Post 91 Sunday Funday Shirt today. Below logo on the back and an option of putting your favorite team logo on the front! Order forms are available at the Post. Various shirt styles are available. Cost $ $ Profits are split between ALA and SAL. Pat asked me to take on this month s article while she was busy putting last minute touches on Oktoberfest. By the time you re reading this, you ll know how successful Oktoberfest was. We had volunteers from all four Post entities as well as other Posts and even non-post members involved. Thanks so much to everyone for all your help! And to Pat Thank you for chairing our Inaugural Oktoberfest Event! I know it wasn t an easy job! September and October are both just crazy busy. This past month we had 8 Post members partner with Post 35 to run bingo at the VA Home. This is something each post in the district does at least once a year. We had a great showing from our Post so thank you! We had a great turnout for our 9-11 event as well! There wasn t even room to walk in the Post! We wrapped up September by attending a luncheon where 2 of our 4 boys that we sponsored for Boys & Girls State last year gave presentations about their experiences. Auxiliary Membership for 2012 is doing very well and we are already at 57% of our goal with 67 members which is ahead of schedule! If you have not paid your 2012 dues, please give them to me or to the bartender and I will get you your card! Don t forget about the A.L.A. recruiting contest as well. Be sure to put your name on the back of any application forms for folks you recruit so you get credit for bringing in a new member! Don t forget about your children and grandchildren! Let s get more junior members signed up as well. They are the future of our Post. A.L.A. will be placing a drop box in the Post to collect items for goodie bags that we will be filling and taking to the veterans in the V.A. Home on Veterans Day. We want to fill at least 50 bags. We need individually wrapped snack items such as nuts or crackers, pudding or apple sauce packs, hats, pins, puzzle books, pens, pencils, any small item that can be placed in 10x10 bags that you feel those in the home would enjoy. Non- Alcoholic beverages like O Douls are a hit as well. Supporting our troops, our family and our freedom, Gina Soutiere 1 st Vice President

3 3 AMERICAN LEGION POST 91 OCTOBER 2011 NEWSLETTER 3 Membership Report Membership is growing as normal. S.A.L. Squadron 91 Where did this year go? It is hard to imagine that it is October already. Time for Fall Conference and getting ready for all of Post 91 upcoming activities. Let s start with Fall Conference on October 28, 29, 30. SAL meeting date is Oct. 29, 2011 at the Carefree Resort in Carefree, Arizona and starts at 9:00 sharp. The Post 91 SAL had a great membership showing at the June conference and I hope that we can get even more members to show up for this one. The weather will be cooler and it is important to see all the good things that get done. I ask all SAL members to show up at this meeting and let s show em how Post 91 rolls. If you have any questions please see me or Tim Harvey for details. Put this date in your calendar and I ll see you there. I was amazed with the immediate support from several Post members in regards to the G.I. Josh program. Once the story is told of how we buy these cute little stuffed dogs with camouflage bandanas To hand out to soldiers who are being deployed for their small sons or daughters at home. The dogs become a great talking point when the soldiers get a chance to call home or write a letter. You know How s Josh doin? Is he being Good? Is he keeping you company? etc. I want to say a big Thank You to Ernie, Will and Tina all who stepped up and donated money to the GI Josh program. I hope to take this great cause to the next level soon and have it be a Post wide event. More details will come once I get done with Oktoberfest. (By the time you read this Oktoberfest will be over) I would like everyone know that the G I josh Program has been such a great success that it is now going to become a National program. (Can you say awesome?) I have been watching the last few days and am I m sure you have too. Jerry Willwater has been working on the meeting room and it is starting to take shape. Thank You Jerry. FREE POPCORN NOW AVAILABLE WHEN THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED Membership is always going to be mentioned when I write these little notes. We need to keep our Eye on the ball and always recruit new members for the Post. I also want to remind everyone to renew their 2012 membership cards (You know who you are) and please, please, please contact Tim Harvey or myself to update any contact information. Also there are contact update sheets on the podium at that Post and just fill it out and give it to the bartender. You can also contact me at jeffpost91@gmail.com Until next month I wish you all a Blessed Day. Jeff Slaboch SAL Commander
