1 24400 Sperry Drive Cleveland, OH User Installatin and Instructin Manual fr The Fixed Truss Anchr This manual shall be used as part f an emplyee training prgram and is intended t meet the instructins required by ANSI Z359.1 and OSHA Fall Prtectin Systems Criteria and Practices. All persnal fall arrest systems and their use shall cmply with the prvisins set frth by these agencies, this manual, and any applicable lcal r state regulatins. [WARNING] Failure t fllw all f the manufacturer s instructins r altering the prduct in any way culd result in death r serius injury. As a part f a part f a persnal fall arrest system the user f the system must fllw all f the manufacturer s instructins. These instructins are intended fr the instructin f installatin f the Fixed Truss Anchr as well as fr use f the Fixed Truss Anchr therefre these instructins must be prvided t all users and installers f this equipment. All users and installers must read the instructins and understand them. Manufacturer s instructins must be fllwed fr maintenance f this fall arrest system. Attentin/Ntice: Cntact Diversified Fall Prtectin (DFP) if there are questins f any kind cncerning installatin, use r maintenance. Attentin/Ntice: D nt thrw away this manual. Installatin must fllw the prvided guidelines t ensure crrect system installatin and safe peratin. Installatin and use utside f these guidelines may invalidate system warranty cverage. 2 I. Applicatins: A. Purpse: The purpse f the fixed truss anchr, FTA, als knwn as the fixed anchr assembly, FAA, (see figure 1) is t be used as an attachment pint f a persnal fall arrest system. It is designed t be used with a full bdy harness with back drsal D-Ring, a carabiner, and a self-retracting lifeline (SRL). B. Limitatins: Capacity The fixed truss anchr is nt t be used by persns with a ttal weight ver 310 punds. This ttal weight includes bdy weight, and the weight f any clthing, tls, and equipment. Fall Clearance In general industry, when wrking n a surface 4 feet r higher frm grund level, per OSHA, fall prtectin is required. This system is designed t prevent serius injury r death in the event f a fall. There must be sufficient clearance belw the user t arrest a fall befre the user strikes the grund r ther bstructin. Clearance required may increase depending n but nt limited t sme f the fllwing factrs: wrker height, wrker weight, mvement f attachment element, elevatin f anchrage cnnectr, SRL length, ther bstructins, deceleratin distance and free fall distance. Figure 2 - Fall Clearances WARNING: Wrking surface must be at least 6 6 frm the grund surface when user is in upright standing psitin t prevent serius injury and/r death (See Figure 2). Swing Falls A swing fall ccurs when the anchr pint is nt directly abve where a fall ccurs. Minimize this hazard by wrking with the anchr verhead as much as pssible. The suggested safe wrk area is within a 30º dwnward facing cne frm an verhead anchr pint t harness D-Ring (See Figure 3). The required clearance significantly increases when a variable length subsystem such as a self-retracting lifeline is used. Envirnmental Hazards Extra precautins may be required t safely use this system if ther hazards in the surrunding envirnment exist. Such hazards include, but are nt limited t: extreme temperatures, pwer lines, mving machinery, sharp edges, crrsin, and txic fumes. Please cntact DFP if yu have cncern f any such cnditins existing where this equipment is being used. Training This equipment is nly permitted t be installed and used by certified fall prtectin cmpetent persns that have been trained in the crrect use and applicatin f the prtable truss anchr. C. Standards: Please refer t all families f standards regarding ccupatinal safety fr mre infrmatin n wrk psitining systems and fall prtectin. These include ANSI, OSHA, and any applicable lcal r state requirements. II. System Requirements: A. Cmpatibility: Cmpatibility shall fllw all requirements f OSHA (d) as well as these instructins and thse f the SRL, harness, and ther cmpnents. Diversified Fall Prtectin, LTD. 3 The design f the fixed truss anchr is made fr use nly with apprved cmpnents and subsystems. Nnapprved cmpnents and subsystems may jepardize the cmpatibility f equipment and affect the safety and reliability f the cmplete system. A cnnectr is cnsidered cmpatible with the fixed truss anchr when they have been designed t wrk tgether in a manner that the gate mechanism cannt accidentally be pened n matter hw they becme riented. Cnnectrs must be cmpatible with the attachment pint and must be capable f supprting a minimum f 5000 punds. D nt use a nn-cmpatible cnnectr as it may unintentinally disengage. Cnnectrs must be cmpatible in strength, size, and shape. Self-lcking snap hks and carabiners are required by ANSI and OSHA. B. Cnnectins: Only use f snaphks and carabiners meeting ANSI Z are permitted fr use with this equipment. This requires that snaphks and carabiners shall be self-clsing and self-lcking and shall be capable f being pened nly by at least tw cnsecutive deliberate actins. Furthermre, the gate f a snaphk r carabiner shall be capable f withstanding a minimum lad f 3,600 punds withut the gate separating frm the nse f the snaphk r carabiner bdy by mre than.125 inches. All cnnectrs must be cmpatible in size, strength, and shape. Ensure all cnnectrs are fully clsed and lcked. Snap hks and carabiners shall never be cnnected: T an attachment pint where anther cnnecter is already attached. In a way that wuld result in a lad n a gate. In false engagement where features that prtrude frm the cnnectr catch n the anchr and seems t be fully engaged withut visual cnfirmatin. T each ther. Directly t webbing, rpe lanyard, r tie-back. T any bject which will nt allw the cnnectr t clse and lck. T any undersized r irregular shaped element, as it may apply a frce t the snap hk gate causing unintentinal disengagement, als knwn as a rll-ut. C. Persnal Fall Arrest System: A full bdy harness must be wrn when this equipment is used as a cmpnent f the fall arrest system. OSHA requires that a fall arrest system must be capable f arresting the user s fall with a max arresting frce (MAF) f 1800 punds. DFP designed this system with a max limit f 900 punds. OSHA requires that the free fall limit is 6 feet r less. This system has been designed fr use with a web r cable style self-retracting lifeline. Lanyards are nt permitted t be used with this system. D. Anchrage Strength: The required strength is dependent n the type f applicatin that is being used. ANSI requires systems t have a strength capable f sustaining static lads as fllws: Fall Arrest: (a) 5000 punds fr nn-certified anchrages (b) Tw times the MAF fr certified anchrages. Rescue: (a) 3000 punds fr nn-certified anchrages (b) Five times the freseeable frce fr certified anchrages These strengths als apply t the anchrage lcatin when attached t a truss. If multiple systems are being attached t the same anchrage pint in any f the prir applicatins, the strengths defined shall be multiplied by the number f systems attached t the anchrage. 4 WARNING: The anchrage cnnectr shall be marked r labeled with its intended applicatin. Use f equipment fr an applicatin that des nt meet the strength requirements can result in serius injury r death. III. Installatin and Use: WARNING: Prir t install, all instructins must be read and understd fr each cmpnent f this persnal fall arrest system. WARNING: D nt alter r misuse this equipment. Cnsult DFP befre using the fixed truss anchr with any ther cmpnent r subsystem than designed fr. Other cmpnents may interfere with the prper peratin f this equipment. Use extra cautin arund electricity, mving machinery, chemical hazards, and sharp edges. WARNING: Pregnant wmen and minrs must nt use the fixed truss anchr system. Age and fitness als affect the ability t withstand falls. Cnsult yur dctr if yu have any dubts regarding yur ability t safely absrb a shck frm a fall arrest. WARNING: Prper Persnal Prtective Equipment must be wrn thrughut the entire installatin prcess. OSHA (a)(1) states each affected emplyee wears a prtective helmet when wrking in areas where there is a ptential fr injury t the head frm falling bjects. Prtective eyewear is als required as part f this system. WARNING: Avid pwer lines and any ther ptential verhead hazards when extending and raising the extensin ple. Maintain a minimum 10 ft distance frm any electrical hazard. A. Planning Requirements Plan yur system prir t installatin. Cnsider any factr that may affect a user s safety. Key pints t cnsider are: anchrage, sharp edges, pst-fall lck ut, and rescue. B. Installatin Requirements Anchr Lcatins - Truss anchrage lcatins must be apprved by a safety engineer r a qualified persn and must meet all f the requirements f these instructins (See Figure 4). 1. May nt be at the end f a truss. 2. May nt be between the first and secnd panel pint. 3. Must be lcated between tw panel pints. 4. Shuld be as clse t a panel pint as pssible. 5 Truss Requirements 1. Bttm Chrd (See Figure 5): Depth, D, f bttm chrd vertical leg f angles must be between 1-1/4 inch and 3 inches. The thickness, Y, f the bttm chrd must be a minimum f 1/4 inch. The gap, S, must be a minimum f 3/4 inch. Must be ht rlled steel with minimum tensile yield strength f 36 kips per square inch. Figure 5 - Bttm Chrd Detail 2. Truss Span Bracing shall be straight, undamaged, and meet the riginal design intent. The span and lading f the truss affects the allwable cncentrated lad that may be applied t the truss. It must be capable f withstanding a cncentrated lad f 900 punds with a safety factr f tw (2) fr certified anchrages and 5000 punds fr nn-certified anchrages. N mre than ne user is permitted at a time per truss. D nt attach t a truss that is smaller than 18 inches in height. An acceptable truss must be designed accrding t the Steel Jist Institute (SJI) and be a K, KCS, LH, r DLH series truss. The truss must be inspected by an engineer r qualified persn fr structural integrity which includes but is nt limited t crrsin, end cnnectins, size, lad capacity, welds, existing lading, bracing, span, r any ther unsafe cnditins. C. Installatin & User Instructins CAUTION: Refer t Prtable Truss Anchr user installatin and instructin manual in additin t this Fixed Truss Anchr Manual. 6 Installatin Directins: 1. Tie ff may be required during installatin f the Fixed Truss Anchr: If installing frm a ladder, tie ff t Prtable Truss Anchr. Refer t Prtable Truss Anchr manual user installatin and instructin manual. If installing frm a lift, refer t yur cmpany s safety plicy regarding tie ff requirements. 2. Visually determine a lcatin n truss fr prper installatin f fixed truss anchr. Refer t Figure 4 Anchr Lcatins n Page 4 fr prper anchr lcatins n truss. 3. Remve lck nut, split lck washer, and 3 x 3 plate frm the fixed truss anchr assembly. 4. With blt thrugh D-Ring and 3 x 5 plate, insert blt thrugh space between bttm chrd angles f truss (See Figure 6). Figure 6 - D-Ring and Bttm Plate Aligned n Truss 5. Place 3 x 3 plate, then split lck washer, and finally lck nut nt blt (See Figure 7, 8, 9). 7 6. CAUTION: The blt head must be belw the truss and the excess thread with washer and nut n tp f the truss. Failure t d s will cause interference with the cnnectin that culd result in injury r death. 7. Plates and D-Ring must all run parallel t the truss. Figure 10 - Prper Assembly f FTA 8. 9 9. Tighten the system t ft-punds ( N-m) trque. Make sure t trque the nut, nt the blt (See Figure 18). Recrd trque n inspectin and maintenance lg. 10 11. Attach 4 Steel Ring t snaphk f SRL. (See Figure 20). Nte: This can als be dne when parts are unpacked. Figure 20 - Attach Steel Ring t SRL Snaphk 12. Visually inspect cnnectin t make sure the SRL is prperly attached t the anchr. 13. Test attachment by pulling SRL away frm anchr t ensure they are cnnected. 14. It is nw safe t begin using the Fixed Truss Anchr as a single pint attachment f a fall arrest system. User Instructins: 1. Attach Prtable Truss Anchr t extensin ple by rtating anchr clckwise (See Figure 21). Figure 21 - Attach PTA t Extensin Ple 2. Visually inspect cnnectin t ensure anchr is secured t the ple. 3. Adjust ple t the prper length and lck in place 4. Lift and extend ple t raise anchr up twards SRL n the Fixed Truss Anchr. 5. Use Included Base Plate t stand ple straight up. 11 6. Use the truss bearing pints f the PTA t hk the 4 Steel Ring attached t the SRL (See Figure 25). Figure 25 - Use PTA t Grab Ring & SRL 7. Pull ple and attachments dwn and take hld f the ring/snaphk (See Figure 26). 8. Set PTA assembly aside Figure 26 - Pull Dwn SRL Snaphk 9. Remve steel ring frm snaphk and set aside. 10. 12 Figure 27 - Cnnect Snaphk t Harness 11. The FTA fall arrest system is nw ready t use. It is safe t ascend t higher elevatins. 12. T discnnect, descend t grund level. Then repeat steps 1-9 in reverse. CAUTION: Thrughly inspect equipment fr damage befre each use. CAUTION: The anchr must be abve the user s head. Keeping the anchr directly abve the user will help prevent swing falls. This will minimize injury and prevent death in the event f a fall. IV. Training: A. It is the respnsibility f the end user t be familiar with these instructins regarding use f the fixed truss anchr system. The end user is als respnsible fr the crrect care, use, characteristics, limitatins, and cnsequences f misuse f this equipment. B. Training is t be cnducted prir t initial installatin f the system. It shuld als be repeated n a regular basis. Training must be perfrmed withut the user being expsed t an actual fall hazard. The end user is t keep training dcumentatin n file. V. Inspectin: A. The fixed truss anchr is t be inspected fr damage (bends, cracks, excessive wear, signs f permanent defrmatin) befre each use. B. A frmal inspectin f the entire system shall be cnducted at least annually. This inspectin shall be perfrmed by a cmpetent r qualified persn that is nt the end user. The results are t be recrded in the inspectin and maintenance lg. C. Inspectin Prcedure: Inspect fixed truss anchr fr any damage r crrsin. Pay clse attentin fr any signs f permanent defrmatin such as cracks r wear that culd jepardize the integrity f the strength f the system. Inspect the truss attachment pints. The anchr must be securely psitined n the truss. Inspect all system cmpnents. Make cpies f the inspectin lg included at the end f this manual. Use it t recrd inspectin results f all cmpnents used with the anchr. D. 13 VI. Maintenance Clean the fixed truss anchr with a mild slutin f sap and water. This will prevent excessive build-up f dirt and ther debris that culd prevent prper peratin. Stre nn-fixed equipment in a secured clean, dry, and nn-crrsive envirnment. Keep equipment recrds which cntain data pertaining t any maintenance r incidents. VII. Specificatins and Parts A.
