2 VICTORIAN FEMALE CRICKET PATHWAY INTRODUCTION VICSPIRIT SQUAD COMMONWEALTH BANK SOUTHERN STARS COMMONWEALTH BANK VICSPIRIT Welcome to the VicSpirit Pathway Championships. Over the next three months, the VicSpirit Pathway Championships will be staged across the state at under-14, under-16 and under-18 levels, culminating in three highly anticipated finals. Having been established as a key component of the talent identification system, the VicSpirit Pathway Championships continues to recognise the state s elite women s cricket team. 9 A JOURNEY TO THE ELITE: ELYSE VILLANI Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit opener Elyse Villani continues to rise through the cricket ranks. The 25-year-old made her mark on the international stage last season, earning a spot in the Australian one-day and T20 line-ups. From Plenty Cricket Club to the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars, we follow Villani on her journey to the elite. Villani began cricket career as an eight-year-old at Plenty Cricket Club where she spent six years as the sole female in her team. From there Villani moved to Premier Club Brunswick Park, who amalgamated with Prahran in 2014, and has played there ever since. She has represented her region in the Northern Falcons pathway side, where she played in the VicSpirit Pathway Championships. Villani also represented her at the School Sport Australia Championships and at Cricket Australia s National Championships. In , the right-hand bat was awarded the Commonwealth Bank Future Star Award for an outstanding season. In that same season, she made her Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit debut and has since played 111 matches for Victoria, amassing 2778 runs with her highest score being 173. Suffering a hamstring injury, Villani spent most of the season on the sidelines. The next season she clinched her first Cathryn Fitzpatrick Award as the WT20 Player of the Year, striking 248 runs at an average of and a strike rate of and also won a recall to the national side. In , Villani enjoyed another standout season for the VicSpirit, claiming back-to-back Cathryn Fitzpatrick Awards as well as the WT20 Player of the Series after accumulating 498 runs at an average of with a strike rate approaching 120. However, she truly soared at cricket s highest echelon last season. Villani produced her highest T20 score for Australia - an unbeaten 90 (54) against Pakistan in the World Cup - made her Test debut in Perth in January and made her one-day international debut in front of a home crowd at the MCG. In her 23 T20s for Australia, Villani has piled on 590 runs, has a strike rate of , had scored five half-centuries and smashed 77 boundaries. Villani will look to cement her position in the Southern Stars line-up after securing a national contract in In the recent tour against Pakistan, Villani lead the series run-scorers with 181 runs at an average of and a strike rate of across four matches. Two years later, Villani made her debut for Australia and enjoyed great success, helping the Southern Stars claim the ICC Women s World Twenty20 trophy in the West Indies in VICSPIRIT PATHWAY CHAMPIONSHIPS VICSPIRIT PATHWAY CHAMPIONSHIPS 17
