1 16 February 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners Newsletter 05/2017 As I sat at prize-giving last week and looked at the learners sitting before me, I saw the results of their hard work, dedication and effort to achieve in their academic schoolwork and the extra-mural programme and felt very privileged to share in the celebrations of their successes. I have no doubt that they, and so many other learners from Rand Park, will be the kind of young people who will make a positive difference to the world, from the domestic sphere to the international stage, and all points in-between. In the list of things that make me so proud of our prize winners and the majority of our learners, I note that academic achievement is but part of the interrelated dispositions that make up what Aristotle would have defined as the good citizen. Our learners are taught in an environment where they are encouraged to have good values and set goals. For many, setting goals is not easy as they do not know where to begin! When I consider Stephen Covey s Seven Habits from the perspective of a successful teenager, it makes sense to me that we encourage our youngsters to begin with the end in mind. Ask them to imagine how they would like four people to describe them, in a speech, at the end of their high school careers. What would they like these people to say about them as individuals, as well as their successes and future potential? With this in mind, the question I pose to our learners is: are you in control TODAY of what these people are going to say about you in the future? Of course, the answer is YES! Stephen Covey says that all things are created twice; once in the mind and then physically - we are a double creation! In this way, you can become aware of the type of person you want to be, as well as where you want to be. Consider too, the type of impression you want to leave and most importantly, the impact you want to have. Covey s message is: script your own life; be your own creator. We can create ourselves, by using his forward-thinking habit of BEGINNING WITH THE END IN MIND. We can determine the direction our lives are going to take. As parents, we need to be proactive in encouraging our children to be in charge of their own plans from an early age. Your children need to be proactive in scripting their lives. To all our Rand Park learners: think of your future NOW. The world is yours, but remember the rule applied by the carpenter when he builds a house - measure twice and cut once! Be a life winner by visualising where you want to be in the future and begin now to set up this future. Yours sincerely J FARQUHAR (MRS) HOD: LIFE SCIENCES & GRADE 10 TUTOR `
