1 5 November 2015 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners Newsletter 27/2015 We are in the middle of the final 2015 examinations and our learners are studying as much as they can to achieve the best results possible. I ve come to realise that we are very privileged to be in a school environment that offers a great education, qualified teachers, supportive parents and learners who want to achieve and make the most of the education offered within our community. There are many young people who are expected to pass their exams under very difficult personal circumstances and achieve good results without the privilege of learning in an environment that offers so many opportunities. Some amazing individuals have managed to overcome personal obstacles to achieve greatness. As an example, a young man named William Kamkwamba (born 5 August 1987) became a Malawian innovator, engineer and author. He gained fame in his country when, in 2002, he built a windmill to power a few electrical appliances in his family's house in Wimbe using Bluegum trees, bicycle parts and materials collected in a local scrapyard. Since then, he has built a solar-powered water pump that supplies the drinking water to his village plus two other windmills (the tallest standing at 39 feet). He is planning to build two more, including one in Lilongwe. William was born to a family of relative poverty and relied primarily on subsistence farming to survive. According to his biography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, his father had been a rough fighting man who changed after discovering the Christian God. A crippling famine forced William to drop out of school, and he was unable to return because his family could not afford to pay the tuition fee. In a desperate attempt to retain his education, William began to visit the local library. It was at this library where William discovered his true love for electronics. He set up a small business repairing radios for local villagers, but this work did not generate much income. After some thought, William decided to create a make-shift windmill. He experimented by using a cheap dynamo model and designed a fully functional windmill that powered some electrical appliances in his family's house. Local farmers and journalists investigated the spinning device and William's fame in international news skyrocketed. A blog about his accomplishments was written on Hacktivate and William took part in an event hosted by an organisation called Maker Faire Africa, in Ghana in August 2009, where African ingenuity that addresses challenges confronted by developing communities, is celebrated and recognised. In spite of the difficulties that so many people have to face, there will always be the curious heroes like William who beat the odds. I have no doubt that there are many learners at our school who will achieve great success, similar to this young man. In the meantime, good luck with the exams! Reminder: 2016 School Uniform At the AGM held on Wednesday, 28 October 2015, it was agreed that learners will be required to wear their school blazers from 1 February 2016, instead of 13 January This follows a request tabled by one of our parents at the meeting which was subsequently approved. Parents and learners are reminded that the new white school shirts with the school crest on the pockets are compulsory from 13 January The phasing out of the former school shirts without the school crest on the pocket concludes at the end of this year. Support Our Debs Fundraiser Present this token to Angelo s Pizza & Grill, situated at 93 Randpark Drive, and they will donate 5% of the value of your restaurant or take-away bill to the Rand Park High Debs fund. Valid for November 2015 only. Santa Shoebox Success! 51 Santa Shoeboxes were presented to the Santa Shoebox Project on behalf of Rand Park High. The RCL initiated the project amongst Grade 8s and 9s. Last year we delivered 42 boxes. This year, Grade 8I learners filled 21 of these boxes. Congratulations to Kyla Swart, Elena Vladimirov, Tanner McMahon, Zeta Rabatin and Andrea Ramsay on collecting and filling the most shoeboxes!
