1 19 April 2018 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners Newsletter 09/2018 One of the secrets of a good education is to realise that everyone is different and has unique talents, strengths and weaknesses. A school that understands this and responds by offering a broad spectrum of activities for learners to participate in (including academic, sport, culture and service) is one that can offer a well-rounded education and an enriched curriculum. I believe that Rand Park High School is such a school. As the first term s academic and merit reports have been issued this week, I challenge the parents of learners who have not achieved their best possible results, to ask themselves whether their child is active in a variety of activities. Much research has been done into the correlation between academic success and involvement in extramural activities. There is compelling evidence that learners benefit from extramural participation in many ways, including increased productivity and attentiveness, while developing soft skills such as time management, multitasking, leadership capabilities, communication skills, tolerance and teamwork. Another important aspect of learning is to choose how you react in the face of adversity. When you do not achieve according to your expectations, make the choice to work smarter and do not be discouraged or lose sight of your dreams. On a different note, we have seen how many behavioural issues tend to appear when a learner has too much free time. I encourage our parents to be more aware of the dangers of social media and inappropriate digital content in particular. Be mindful of your child s online activities and social media engagement. It is also advisable for cell phones to be charged, at night, in a room that is not the child s bedroom. Lastly, to anyone who feels bewildered or confused in our ever-changing world, you need look no further than the school badge for inspiration: INTEGRITY AND COMMITMENT. All the best for the term ahead! Yours sincerely MR C O CONNELL DEPUTY PRINCIPAL/GRADE 9 DEAN For those learners who made the most of what our school has to offer last term, but did not achieve academically, please ask your parents to assist you by talking about your academic goals and identifying what may be standing in your way of achieving these goals. Draw up a study roster and liaise with your Grade Tutor if you feel you need additional support or advice.
