1 19 October 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners Newsletter 24/2017 We have noticed that many learners at Rand Park are not eating correctly and seem to be reluctant to ensure that they get the proper nutrition needed to excel at school. The popular saying you are what you eat stands true when describing our physical existence and our capacity to focus and perform our daily activities. We require energy to perform involuntary activities, such as breathing and digestion, as well as voluntary activities like reading, writing and running. On average a high school learner needs between calories per day, depending on their gender, rate of cellular respiration and level of activity. When a teenager is exceeding or not meeting this daily dietary requirement, this not only affects his/her growth and brain development, but can contribute toward developing illnesses and health risks including high or low blood pressure; obesity; diabetes; heart disease; cancer and depression. To recognise an eating disorder, parents should be aware of the following behavioural and physical warning signs: Constant obsession/repetitive cues concerning weight gain and loss Skipping meals Binge eating Evidence of vomiting or laxative abuse Social withdrawal Rapid weight loss Fainting/dizziness Fatigue and dark rings around the eyes Inability to focus The most sustainable energy source for teenagers is found in the carbohydrates/starches food group. Carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes, breads and rice should form part of all meals and should not be neglected. Other major food groups which are important in the diet include fruit and vegetables (a source of fibre, vitamins and minerals), meat, chicken, fish and beans (sources of protein) and milk and dairy foods (sources of calcium and minerals). Sugary treats are recommended for an occasional spoil but should not be eaten daily. At the best of times, teenagers can be challenging to communicate with, not to mention trivial over matters like a healthy diet. However, it is our responsibility to inform them of the importance of eating correctly. The following suggestions may encourage your child to become more involved in healthy food choices: include them when you go grocery shopping; involve them in meal preparation; ensure that they pack a healthy school lunch; and encourage them to create a food diary so that they can record what they eat every day. Let s do what we can to ensure that our children are prepared mentally and physically for their transformation from adolescents to adults. Yours sincerely MISS M OBERHOLSTER EDUCATOR: LO & PHYSICAL EDUCATION `
