2 MARCH 2016 ACTIVITIES by Dottie Karika Thankfully, we're only a little less than a month away from Spring, totally looking forward to the warmer days. The crocus' and daffodils are even beginning to bloom! Can't wait for Linda Burkert & Nancy Warren to see all the beautiful daffodils that Jack Mundorf planted in their yard. Most of the daffodils in Coastal Plantation came from Jack! Looking forward to Saturday for our "Leaping into Leap Year Pot Luck Dinner". Our hosts Bea & Ted Acorn, Mim & Beryl Bloch, Mary Ellen Gaffney, Dottie Wanzor & Dottie & Jim Karika anticipate a great evening with delicious appetizers, salad, entrees, vegetables & desserts. Since we have such great cooks in Coastal, I'm sure it will be fun sampling all the dishes. At the moment we have 60 members and guests signed up to attend. Cocktails & appetizers with music by Beryl Bloch at 5:30PM with dinner at 6. We are planning to have lots of frogs in the decorations to go along with the theme. Hope everyone enjoys themselves & thanks to our hosts for volunteering! Our next get together is the "A" Team breakfast to be held Saturday, March 8AM. Jim and his crew look forward to seeing lots of you there! On Saturday, March 19th, our annual "St. Patrick's Day Dinner" will be held. If you like corned beef & cabbage with Irish soda bread, this is the place to be. A flyer will be out shortly with all the particulars, hosts for the event are Pat & Charlie Brady, Pat Byron, May Curfman, Joan & Steve Hildreth, Pat & Charlie Ottino, Jean Stoudenmire and Rose Anne Tumm. Another great Coastal evening in the future! Due to Easter being so early this year, our annual Bowling Competition will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 3PM at Beach Bowl in Ogden. Bea & Ted Acorn and Dottie & Jim Karika have taken over the reigns from Rosemary Krug who ran the fun for 5 yrs. Format will be the same, the lower bowlers bowling first and the higher bowler throwing the second ball unless of course the first ball is a strike. Prizes will be had for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and lowest scoring team. Flyers will be forthcoming as we get closer to the date. I would like to thank everyone for their concern for Jim with his latest heart procedure. He's doing well but changing our life style has been challenging. My stove is getting a workout it's not used to and a friend has given me "350 ways to cook chicken". Til next time, God bless! Dottie
3 LADIES LUNCH & MOVIE BUNCH Our February outing schedule proved to be an engineer's dream! Special thanks to all the seven -! - drivers that it took to get 20 ladies to lunch and movies due to last minute changes and illness - not to mention two shifts for lunch! For the first time ever, we split our lunch times to accommodate the early showing of "Brooklyn" which had been here during the holidays and now brought back since the lead actress, Saoirse Ronan, is up for an Academy Award. Those of us who missed it and some who just recently read the book were glad to have a second chance to see it. It tells the tale of a young Irish immigrant in 1950's Brooklyn who ultimately must decide whether her heart belongs in her new home or her homeland. Some ladies said the ending of the movie was better than the ending of the book - so now I must read the book! Once again, Sea Captain's Seafood Calabash went out of their way to accommodate us beginning with a preset seating section, their breakfast menu (available 'til noon) as well as the usual many and varied lunch selections. As our "first shift" of ten was about finished, our second ten began arriving. Excellent service to all by the staff and a visit by the owner. Two or three other movies were seen at later times at Carmike. "The Choice", most recent movie from a Nicholas Sparks book, was filmed here in Wilmington in the fall of 2014 which makes it even more interesting to us locals. The beautiful filming of Wrightsville Beach, the Intracoastal and Wilmington is a travelogue in itself and makes the "very friendly, very funny and ultimately dramatic" love story extra special. "Hail Caesar" stars George Clooney as the lead actor of a Biblical epic of that name being filmed in a large studio and is a tribute by the Cohen Brothers to the era of classical Hollywood spectaculars. For example, Josh Brolin plays Eddie Mannix, who was a real studio fixer at MGM studios from 1920's to 1940's and Scarlett Johansson's De Anna is an Esther Williams type swimming super star. Some of us "older" movie buffs might pick up on some of this; for others it's just a crazy, fun, lavish story. Also on the list was "The Finest Hours", the true story of a daring 1952 Coast Guard rescue mission. We were fortunate to have such a large selection of "good" movies this month and some may carry over to our next outing, the second Thursday, March 10th. Our older daughter will be visiting from CA and I'd like you all to meet her, so mark your calendars and call me. Thanks to one and all for your patience and cooperation. This wonderful, large group is a Coastal blessing. Fleur
4 BOWLING from Jim Karika Beryl Bloch led the bowling with a 180, series followed by Charlie Brady's The following week Charlie had a 178, , I think he's getting used to the new ball. Ted Acorn, showing off his new ball, had a series, his first 500 series for the season! The following week he bowled a 179. "I think he's got it." Steve HIldreth followed with a series. Bob Johnston bowled a 187 and missed his 500 series with a 493. Dot Karika, with her new ball, led all the women and a few of the men with games of 178 and 180. No, I'm not selling bowling balls, it's just working out that way! Fleur McKnight had a 172 game and the next week had a 455 series, her highest for the year. Pete Schnauder changed hats and bowled a 170. Some people get new balls, Pete goes for new hats!! Chuck Mc Knight & Bernie Zikos both had a 168, Bea Acorn & Pat Brady tied with 167 games and Mina Alford a 165. We have a different story going on with Rich Jemmott, he also got a new ball but for his left hand. Rich Is having trouble with arthritis in his right hand, so far a 160 is his highest game in 4 weeks. Keep trying Rich, we're all rooting for you!! Help support the Pender County Public Library fundraiser!! March 12th Saturday at Beach Bowl on Market Street from 12noon to 4pm. The cost is $10.00 for 2 hours and this includes the shoes. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hampstead Questions? call Cindy Klempay SUNSHINE CLUB from Dottie Karika Again I have to thank all those who kept me in their prayers, called, sent cards & visited after my procedure. Your caring means a great deal to me and my family. This community has never failed to impress me with your kindness. Thank you, Jim Karika Please keep Linda Henry in your prayers. She has some issues and was in the hospital for a few days. We all wish her well.

7 MANAGER S MEMO The new year is off to a fast start; I cannot believe we are already into March! This also means yard season is fast approaching as lawns will be greening up and the azaleas will be blooming! Now is the time to do a little lawn feeding according to the extension office; as stated, centipede lawns should receive 1-2 pounds of nitrogen per year, per 1,000 square feet. May need the higher amount if lawn is growing in sandy soil or in an area with a long growing season, such as near the coast. This is something that needs to be done on a consistent basis; not once every 5-6 years. There are Maintenance calendars available at the office that give the dates of what needs to be done throughout the year to maintain a healthy lawn. If you are not sure about amount or which fertilizer to use; Ace Hardware and Lowes have cheap soil sample test kits available or bag some of the soil and take to the Arboretum on Oleander Drive in Wilmington and they will test it and let you know what you need. Until next month; Thank you all for making Coastal Plantation the active and enjoyable community it is!!!!!!! Timothy Weaver REMINDER for residents with pets: Please make sure to have your pets on a leash while outside. If you are having guests over that also have pets, please make sure their pets are on a leash while outside and they pick up after them. Thank you for keeping Coastal Plantation clean! REMINDER: For any water issues you are having Please call Pender County Utilities at Wednesday is LEAF PICK-UP Day: When you rake your piles of leaves to the curb, please make sure there are no rocks, mulch, sand, soil or sticks in the piles. The leaf vac can only pick up leaves. Anything else will damage the vac, which will result in unneeded breakdowns. Thank you! WIFI password at the Clubhouse is jensens714
8 Sky Watch March Sky by Margaret Stenerson Ahh, March - the month of daffodils and hyacinths, the return of the robins, Easter, and the vernal equinox will all be here. The equinox is on Sunday, March 20 th. Spring will be officially here in Hampstead! Alleluia! Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 13 th. ( Spring ahead, Fall back ) Sunrise on March 12 th is 6:14am and on March 13 th it reverts to 7:13am. But, sunset on March 12 th is 6:06pm and on March 13 th it jumps 7:0! You may remember from last year that Easter falls on the Sunday after the full moon (23 rd ) after the vernal equinox (20 th ). That is why it is so early this year. The EARTH is closest to the sun on March 2 nd. Wouldn t you think it would be warmer? Remember from school that the earth s orbit around the sun is an ellipse and the sun is not in the middle? So, sometimes the earth is closer to the sun (perihelion) and sometimes the earth is farther from the sun (aphelion). Draw an oval on a piece of paper with a dot for the sun off center and a little circle on the line for the earth see?? Phases of the Moon March 1st : Last or 3 rd Quarter Moon (looks like half a moon) and visible in the AM March 5 th March 8 th : Waning Crescent visible in the morning sky : New Moon - not visible from earth March 12 th : Waxing Crescent Moon (getting larger and visible in the afternoon) March 15 th : First Quarter Moon (looks like a half moon) and visible afternoons March 19 th : Waxing Gibbous Moon (getting larger toward the Full Moon) March 23 rd : Full Snow or Wolf moon March 27 th : Waning Gibbous Moon (getting smaller than full moon) March 31 st : Last or 3 rd Quarter Moon Planets visible: Mar. 27 th : Moon and Mars and Mar. 28 th : Moon and Saturn Constellations visible: THE brightest star in the sky is now visible: Sirius in Canis Major (the big dog) The Big Dipper, A SOLAR eclipse occurs on Mar. 8 and 9, but is visible only in Indonesia and the Pacific
