2 2 COASTAL CHATTER MA Y 2018 ACTIVITIES by Dottie Karika After all the April chill & showers, we certainly are hoping for a beautiful & sunny May! Isn't it wonderful seeing all the greenery and flowers blooming and so many residents working on their lawns. Many thanks to some of our members who are helping those who can't spruce up their yards by themselves! A diamond in their crowns! Speaking of April showers bring May flowers, our "Pot Luck Dinner" held on Saturday, April 5:30PM was fantastic. The clubhouse was decorated very spring like with Adirondack chairs, flowers & floral wreaths on the tables & around the room. 70 members & guests enjoyed a bountiful of appetizers, salads, main dishes, vegetables, bread & butter. The desserts were to die for with many over the top items. No one went home hungry that's for sure! Our thanks to Bea & Ted Acorn, Fleur & Chuck Mc Knight, Vivian & Dick Ricard and Dottie & Jim Karika for hosting the event. It was a fun evening! Our Annual JAC Meeting is to be held on WEDNESDAY, MAY 6:30PM. The meeting day has been changed from Monday to Wednesday. This is the meeting for the selection of officers for the next fiscal year, so please try to attend. Nominations will be taken from the floor and voting is done on a paper ballot. Our "B" Team breakfast team will be hosting the May breakfast on Saturday, May 8AM. We never know what Bob & his team will come up with this time. There seems to be a little competition between the two teams, April, Mike Gillis made delicious Corned Beef Hash which everyone loved! Good Luck Bob! Our next event will be the "Pool Opening Party" hosted by JAC officers and board members. Jensen's Inc. pays the majority of the cost and is free to all Coastal residents. There will be plenty of hamburgers & hot dogs plus salads, appetizers and dessert. The date is normally the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend with a rain date of Memorial Day. This info may change but a flyer will be out as the date draws near. There is always a special ceremony for our Veterans! God Bless them! The 2nd Saturday in June is our "Super Brunch" with the combination "A" & "B" Breakfast Teams hosting. Always a fun morning that starts at 9AM instead of the usual 8AM. They serve Mimosa's, Bloody Mary's, omelets, waffles, fruit salad and many other special items plus the regular breakfast items. A flyer will be out with all the particulars towards the end of May! Wishing all our ladies a Happy Mother's Day and hoping we have a beautiful May with blue skies, puffy clouds and warm weather! God Bless, Dottie. ATTENTION COASTAL PLANTATION RESIDENTS: If your phone number or has changed, please notify the office. Call or cpoperations@jensencommunities.com. Thank you! Christine
3 3 COASTAL CHATTER MA Y 2018 BOWLING by Jim Karika As we approach the last week of winter bowling with averages being kept. Of the 24 regular bowlers, we show 8 bowlers improving their average from last year with one staying the same. This doesn't include the new bowlers. That shows a 50% improvement which I think is great! Leading the way was Mary Ellen Gaffney with 11 points higher followed by Mim Bloch's 10 pts. Gary Struck led the men with 7 points higher followed by Rich Jemmott's 1 pt. Gary's wife, Pat, was the one who stayed the same. I know 12 bowlers who would have taken that, I know I certainly would. Lil Duffus matched Gary's 7 and Gladys Joyce was up 3 pts. Fleur Mc Knight & Jean Stoudenmire both improved by 2 points. All in all, I believe we had a good year and I congratulate the people who were able to improve their averages from last year. Bea & Ted Acorn will be taking over for the summer, relieving Charlie Brady who took care of summer bowling for many years. The same rules apply - let them know when you can't bowl by calling them the night before or in the morning plus no averages are kept during summer bowling. Thanks and I'll see you at the bowling alley! Jim And From Charlie Brady... This summer Ted Acorn is going to take over. Bea and Ted have been filling in for Jimmy during the winter bowling when he is away. They have done a great job and have agreed to handle the summer league. I will still be there and will be their backup with Dot and Jim. It is much easier for two people to do it. Since Pat's passing someone helped me each time I did it. I would like to thank all of the bowlers for all the help over the years. As long as I am writing something for the chatter and have your attention, my grandson and his wife had a baby girl Thursday afternoon. Both mother and daughter are doing fine. So I am now a great grandfather. Charlie Brady SUNSHINE CLUB Please keep the following members in your thoughts & prayers: Cindy Klempay, Helen & Bill Rogers, Arlene Kutz, Sandy Powell & her son, Cathy Edson, Bill Hanks, Bernie Zikos and Bob Rossi.

6 6 COASTAL CHATTER Ladies Lunch & Movie Bunch by Fleur McKnight Hello Movie Fans and welcome back! April 12th found 16 of us gathering at Ruby Tuesday's in Mayfaire to enjoy their spacious salad bar, wonderful soups and other lunch specials guided along by a good waiter. We made our short way over to the Regal theaters where (after choosing seats for near empty theaters!) we dispersed to see three very separate movies. The majority attended "I Can Only Imagine". This true story follows the life of Bart Millard, lead singer of the Christian band Mercy Me, who loses his father to cancer and is inspired to write the mega-hit song of the movie title. Starring Dennis Quaid, Trace Atkins and Cloris Leachman it fills in the joys and sorrows, ups and downs of an impassioned soul singer. Many friends and families saw this movie well beyond our movie group and all sang it's praises with smiles and tears. The movie, "Chappaquiddick", takes it's name from a Massachusetts island where in 1969 Ted Kennedy in his late 30's (played by Jason Clarke) drove his car off a bridge resulting in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. As most Americans have heard this story in it's many facets, the film does not take sides, yet lays out the conflicted character of Ted Kennedy and the pressures he's under, both personal and politically. It's an example of the extent some politicians will go to protect their public image, career and stability of their party. On the opposite end of the stick, four of us had our own personal theater, in our chosen seats, to take part in "Game Night". Billed as an "action, adventure, comedy", starring Jason Bateman, Rachel Adams, and Kyle Chandler among several other good actors and a cute dog, it certainly filled the bill. When a Murder-Mystery night involving outside play actors in a kidnapping turns from fake fun to reality, unbeknownst to the rest of the players at first, it becomes a farce of following clues that seem to go nowhere to being wounded with a "fake" gun, chasing and being chased by the "real" criminals, fight party at a mansion, Faberge egg, red herrings everywhere, we laughed ourselves out loud and silly all through as we were also part of the mystery to the very end. A bit of language and innuendo but not overdone. We thoroughly enjoyed letting loose and having fun right along. Our next movie outing will be the second Thursday, 10th of May. Mark your calendars now to stay free of all appointments! It's fun to schmooze with other ladies over lunch and enjoy being entertained in reclining seats. (Just have to stay awake!) Be sure I have your name on my list by Monday, May 8th, to be sure everyone has a ride and who'd like to drive. Thank you. Your Movie Lady, Fleur ; famck6016@gmail.com

9 9 A NOTE FROM THE MANAGER: COASTAL CHATTER THAT UGLY GREEN STUFF ON YOUR HOME All of us, as we strive to maintain our homes and keep them looking good, will sooner or later have to deal with algae growth on our vinyl siding, and gutters. This algae can take several forms and colors (black, brown, and green, the most common), and, it can also be difficult to remove. If left untreated, it can damage the siding and decrease the visual appeal of your home. Additionally, the cleaning process, if done improperly, has the potential to damage siding, shrubbery or gardens. I will attempt to sort thru the issue and clarify or simplify the solution to the problem. There are almost as many explanations for the problem as there are complaints. There seems to be no end to miracle products, and problem-solving articles written on this subject. While it s not likely you will be able to eliminate this problem, with a sensible approach to your home maintenance, you might be able to slow or limit the growth and the recurrence. This will help keep your home looking better longer. Let s first look at just what this stuff is. The algae (often referred to as mold or mildew) are actually growing on your home. Typically, you need certain conditions for this to occur. These conditions are proper temperatures, limited sunlight, close vegetation or shrubs, and continual moisture availability. Additional contributors causing green growth can be sugars given off by some bushes or trees that will adhere to your siding and feed the algae. The north facing side of your home (very little sun effect) is the most likely place for algae growth to begin. Once this growth begins and conditions remain the same, it has the ability to spread rapidly, even at low temperatures. I have been very surprised to see how much growth occurs even in the fall and cooler months of the year. Now that you know what it is, what can you do about it? The best thing to do is identify it and treat it early, before it becomes a difficult or expensive repair. There are several methods to regaining the attractive appearance of your home. You can hire a power washing contractor with good references and proper credentials who will make the repairs for a fee of $100-$300 depending on the severity of the algae. This would also be the best time to wash your entire home. You or a relative can wash and treat the surfaces with any of several effective products available in the Home Depot, Lowes, or a local hardware store. Application methods vary from power washing to scrubbing with a variety of tools, or in the case of small areas, just treating and wiping with sponge or cloth. THE BOTTOM LINE Until the siding and paint manufacturers develop products that eliminate the ugly green stuff, we are stuck with it. The best way to keep your home and community looking good is to regularly invest time, effort, and a few dollars in preventative maintenance. You ll be glad you did. Sincerely, Bob Erickson, Community Manager
